Derby #122: Family

Family can mean a lot of things. Maybe it looks like the Cleavers. Maybe it's a Yakuza family. Maybe it's all your sisters and you. Maybe your family is actually genetically related, or maybe you all met on LiveJournal. With most of us seeing our families quite a bit over the next month or so, 'tis the season for considering the joy and the tension found in every family. Functional, dysfunctional, nuclear, radioactive, biological, cybernetic - any kind of family is fair game this week.

Derby #119 (Flight): Honorable Mentions

Howard Hughes could tell you all about it (if he were alive, and sane). You can dream, you can hope, you can draw up plans, but it doesn't mean your creation will actually fly. The recipients of Honorable Mentions for Derby #119: Flight may not have invested as much time and money in their Spruce Geese as Hughes did, but we're sure their feelings are just as bittersweet...

Derby #121: Propaganda for Everyday Life

The Berlin Wall fell almost exactly 20 years ago. The whole Soviet Bloc was soon to follow. While they weren't too good at running a society, the Soviets knew how to make a striking propaganda poster. We think it's time to apply that effective visual style to the everyday problems of human interaction, the unwritten rules that help us all get along. Don't change the radio station in someone else's car. Don't go snooping in your friends' medicine cabinets. Always say nice things about a new parent's choice of baby name, whether you mean it or not. You know, the sort of thing that's always getting Larry David in trouble.

This week, create a t-shirt exhorting people to follow one or more of these rules, in a recognizably propagandistic style. The classic Russian style can be seen here, here, here, and here. But don't forget the Cubans and the Chinese. And keep in mind that we Americans used to be pretty good at this sort of thing, too.

Text is allowed as part of a graphic-oriented design. This is looser than our "incidental text" rule, but we still don't want all-slogan shirts.

No world leaders or other recognizable figures. Sorry, but otherwise we'll get hundreds of "When you double-dip, you party with Hitler"-type designs.

Derby #120: Double-Take Derby 7

Return with us now to those thrilling days of yester-Derby, when we indulge our what-ifs and what-might-have-beens. That's right: time for another Double-Take Derby, when the Honorable Mentions from past weeks vie for another shot at your heart. This week, take your pick of our unsung favorites from Derbies #105 and #107-117. Redemption is afoot!

Designers: if you sold or submitted your Honorable Mention design elsewhere, or opted out of including your design in the Double-Take Derby, email us at shirt@woot.com by noon tomorrow and let us know. Any design found for sale, having sold, or submitted to another site for voting will not be eligible for the Double-Take Derby and will be removed from consideration.

Usually, we announce the next Derby here, to give you an extra week to work on it. But the awesome thing we were working on hasn't quite worked out yet. Watch for it...

Derby #119: Flight

If it moves through the air, or at least wants to move through the air, it's fair game for this week's Derby. Airplanes, balloons, birds, missiles, bats, hang gliders, rockets, Wallendas: gas 'em up, get 'em on the runway, and take off into the sunset of Derby stardom. (The Rejecterator might even be softening his position on flying penguins, but don't tell him we said so.)

Incidental text allowed.

No video-game references.

Yes, as many of you have pointed out, we are aware that we used "Air" as the theme for Derby #94, almost six months ago. We're hoping you'll take this Derby's different emphasis as a cue to take your designs in a different direction than those covered before.
