So wait, this is done with only 6 colors? The watercolor effect looks great but I can't wrap my brain around how its done with 6. Woot can't print halftones that small can they?

I count 6. The sun: yellow, orange, and the pink-ish color. The sky: bright blue, light blue, and the gray blue.

I know what you mean but from the comp, it looks as though different tints are being used and overlaid onto one another. I was under the impression that for the derbies, woot only printed 6 solid colors and you had to achieve any other effects with techniques like halftones, hence my question. There's a lot of compliments from Derby regulars in here so I figure you guys know something I don't at this point.

If what it appears Edgar has done is legit, you could completely avoid the color limitations by designing in full color, then splitting out into CMYK plates. That's how 4 color print process stuff is created.

Not trying to hate or anything, I'm genuinely curious about this.

What about the grey cloud outline and the two shades of grey inside the cloud?

Not to mention the yellow/blue overlap that makes a green in some spots?

Missed the outline. I'm not a designer but I'm going to guess half-tones. I believe that half-tones are allowed and woot will decide on a case by case basis whether to print them or not. I think that half-tones are not encouraged, although not banned either. I'm just guessing here. Someone like Jaden would know better than me.

This shirt has a cool, lazy feel to it, almost like visually drinking pink lemonade. It begs to be worn on a sunny spring or summer day.

I'm sorry, but there's no way that this is just 6 colors. I counted about 14. Now, I'm no genius graphic designer, but if this is 6 colors, I would really like to know how this can be interpreted as such. I have tried some designs myself, and haven't done well with coloring. If we can submit stuff like this, please tell me!

If, on the other hand, only certain people get to submit shirts with full color, I'd like to know that as well.

After noticing a trend of the same winners over and over again, yes, they are good, but I'm thinking this site may be rigged. All evidence seems to point that way, but then again, I may just be paranoid.

What "evidence"?

Besides that, my guess is HALFTONES LIKE WHOA. And actually, I see about 6 colors.

There is:
-The outline color
-The yellow orange of the outer sun
-The red that serves as BOTH the cloud around the sun AND the inside of the sun
-The bright blue
-The dark blue

Actually, I'm still missing a color, but I think this may be done with five.

If the halftones are spaced properly, you can do lots of crazy things.

I disagree. Edgar is experienced enough to know what sort of things Woot can and cannot do. I guarantee this is no more than 6 colors, and the process I mentioned is how.

If that's true, then that's pretty cool. I'll have to mess around with some of that. I was thinking the same thing as yakub89. I thought woot couldn't print halftones that small, but if edgar is doing what you say and it is legal, then nice job edgar.

I mean, I don't know if they CAN print them, but I would assume Edgar would know what he can and can't do, and I can see how you could achieve this with 6 colors (or less, even), even if Woot can't actually do this.

Yup its definitely not more than six colors.

Also, what might make the halftones harder to see is the cotton texture Edgar has used behind the illustration.

Yes, and I'd buy at least two.

I know it might be hard to understand if you've never been anywhere other than woot, but there are plenty of tshirt sites that print nothing but art--not cute or punny designs, but actual art like this and beyond--on tshirts. And people buy those tshirts! And the sites make money! One would think that someone of your woot seniority would know that.

Yeah, it's totally weird that people would want something beautiful on their shirts (it is not totally weird).

I've been lurking here for a little while now, and I'm fully aware that people buy T-shirt designs with art on them; I even like many of them - but for some reason this doesn't strike me as a T-shirt design either.

Frankly, I believe that everything by edgar should be drawn/painted/lithographed onto canvas/wood/paper, beautifully framed, and sold for lots of money (which I would gladly pay). Lacking that option, I am happy to wear his work when made available. While best suited to framing, his art is good enough for my chest, indeed.

Yes, but at the point where there is no proof that alt voting=wins to the degree that people posit, it's a moot point.

As I've said in the past, I don't think Ramy and Seki are using alt accounts to rig the derby in their favour. However, I also don't deny that it's possible. I like the idea, though there may be some problems with it.

Here's why I like it - if people have been using alt accounts, the $1 charge will discourage the practice. If there isn't any (major) alt account use going on and the anime designs continue to win, there will be less reason to suspect untoward activity.

One of my concerns about such a system would be how the charge is handled. Are you automatically billed when you cast your vote? And if the design doesn't win, do you get a refund?

I think it would have to take the form of a pledge, where if you manage to win, then you have to pay. But if that happens, all the reasons why an auto-buy shouldn't occur also apply - e.g. someone may not be able to afford the charge right away and voted with the hope of purchasing at a later date. Granted, $1 is much less than $10, but it's still a similar situation.

Moreover, using alt accounts would still be profitable. You don't need a thousand votes to rig the derby; you only need enough to get yourself into the hotness every so often. If derby rigging is going on as described then, what, it'll cost $100-$300 over all those accounts? The prize is still worth it. The only thing is that it might aid in exposing system abuse to Woot... but they'd have to care first.
