I tried to avoid doing dragons in the past derby, but this one was just too perfect.

Man, that's a giant sausage!

Unprepared Pete the Imposter had a Nightmare Cuckoo Clock that was Almost Human. The Walrus had the Height of the Eggmen's Envy at the Monkey Bar where the DJ spun the records on a Flora Phonograph.

re: mongolianbbq

Truly an awesome design, but as someone who's spent almost a year in Mongolia, I couldn't resist a bit of a history lesson. Mongolia is famous for its horses, eagles, and camels. Dragons are prevalent to Chinese and Japanese culture. Chinggis Khaan's soldiers are supposed to have used their shields or swords to cook meat over open fires, and Mongolian BBQ is not Mongolian at all, but supposedly originated in Taiwan! Believe me, there are not many veggies native to Mongolia...too short a growing season.

Re: Mongolian BBQ

As a person who is particularly picky about languages, I have a bone to pick with the fire character on the apron. First, though, as someone mentioned, Dragons aren't really part of Mongolian culture. That aside, I still take issue with the use of kanji.

From wikipedia: The official language of Mongolia is Khalkha Mongolian, which uses the Cyrillic alphabet, and is spoken by 90% of the population.

The character isn't even used in the official language. Therefore, the name Mongolian Barbecue doesn't apply to this shirt in any way. The character is an incorrect language (also, I'd have recommended the character for grill instead of heat/flame), Dragons aren't Mongolian and Mongolian barbecue uses swords/sticks and shields over fire.

All of that being said, I like the design. The dragon is well-done and it's a cute idea. But the misnomer kinda bugs me. -_-;

EDIT: And before someone goes "Yeah, well what would YOU call it?!" I should probably say that had I made this design or a similar one I'd have called it "yakiniku" which is Korean barbecue that is popular in Superspryteachu! I choose you! and other Asian countries. Before Hangul was created, Korean was written in Chinese characters, justifying the 火("hi") in there. And Dragons are found in Korean culture, although the beard would have to be a little longer.

Pwnt.

Yeah, I was wondering about the Kanji and the dragon being Mongolian, but I still like the shirt. :3

No one in the real world is going to know the title of the shirt... unless you run around telling them and pointing at it.

So aren't the history lessons a little over-the-top? Yes, It's a Korean/Japanese/Chinese/Asian style dragon. Yes, it's Japanese Kanji on the apron. While we're at it, lets make that a German Bratwurst just for the sake of it... And he's referencing Mongolia, and he's selling to primarily Americans!!!111oneoneone
Now his shirt is somewhat multicultural. wow.

Thank you for trying to teach the world a lesson based on a witty shirt title and design, but really. I just want to wear the damn thing.

I think one could potentially argue that it's off-topic in a way because of the titling. But also, considering the designer put so much care into the design, I'd have appreciated at least a minor amount of accuracy. There are people who care about education. ^_~

Re: Mongolian BBQ

Thanks to everyone who gave info about the character on the apron, about Mongolian BBQ and about all the tangential topics. I love this kind of stuff, however trivial it might seem to others.

I have been to an exhibit about Chingghis (sp?) Khan, and they did not use Cyrillic during his time. The did have a written language, but it looked more like Klingon to me.

While Mongolian BBQ may be a misnomer for this shirt, I agree with the poster who said that unless you were here during the derby, you wouldn't know that was its name. And woot may change the name if it places.

Kudos for a fantastic red shirt! I can always use more of them!
