Even returning to this later in the day, for at least the fourth time, it nearly brings a tear to my eye. I suppose it's connecting with my own experience of saying good-bye...I don't know. Somehow, this just hits me. It's beautiful. Easily the best, in my opinion (of course). I sincerely hope you win.

The whole concept makes me giggle, and I love that there's a nighttime (?) background, almost like he's making an escape and she caught him.

If it's pertinent, why not? It wasn't really insult slinging, and there's always room for constructive criticism anywhere. Frankly, while we may know to whom the post was aimed, it also serves as a useful breakdown of some of the basic elements of good t-shirts.

It's incredibly well done. I'm not sure if I could actually wear it, because then people would ask me why I was in tears all the time, and I'd have to explain it was my t-shirt. I didn't actually cry when I saw it. I came close. And I also came close the second time...

It's a wonderful design.

I feel the urge to post something that won't get deleted, so no sarcasm or calling out of other posters who are being big poopy-faced dummies here!

I like this one Boots, you can tell that the fish doesn't want to leave, but he can't fight that urge to explore where no fish has gone before. All of fishykind owes this brave explorer a debt of gratitude!

I haven't been too pleased with this derby overall, I don't know what kind of Flight entry I was expecting to see and didn't... but ironically all the ones I DO like have something to do with sea life or fishing or something, lol

I really don't see that this is any different from any of the other "beady-eyed" artwork. And yeah, that fish is so slick that it seems to have shaved its fins off. Really, the only thing that makes her artwork any different from the other "cute" art that you hate so much is the muted palette.

Is her design good? Yes. It's a nice design. Is it "great"? Not to me. Setting this piece up as some sort of ideal that everyone else on Woot should aspire to is just stupid. You seem to be confusing opinion for fact.

It's superior at a conceptual level, I think. The focus isn't on the Our Movie Genre cuteness! of the animals, but on the entire construction of the design. It tells a story. It's funny, and it's kind of touching. It's cute, but not cloyingly so. These are all subtle differences that add up to a design that's a hell of a lot better than most "beady eyed critter" designs.

Agreed, its the Story telling that Makes the Shirt. IMO the "semi Cute" Fish used here are a bonus. Its not to much but just enough.

not Only does the fish want to fly, the Helmet gives an idea of the Fish wanting to travel into space. while that may not be what boots is trying to convey its sure seems like it to me.

it also goes above and beyond on the "flying Fish Idea" instead of using that Idea Boots added in a Balloon
The Other fish still in the water conveys Emotion.

and finally, people look at these designs with the Idea of "am I going to wear that?"

and most of boots work is Subtle and well thought out with a hint of "cute" which makes for excellent Wearability.

It's hardly an "ideal", however it is certainly something that other people who traffic in similar work should take note of. Because this is done well, and other work is not. Which is why this is relevant.

I've already noted a number of reasons this is undeniably better than other junk woot has printed. Are they opinions? Sure. But they're based on truths. Art is about taking ones opinions and merging them with the truth, or taking the truth and creating your own view. While this has similarities to some popular work, it is nevertheless created with the designer's own style in mind, instead of being simply by the book. but more importantly, there is one feature that I want to point out that really sums the whole difference up.

Check out the eye. It's not the most advanced eye ever. It's not a triumph of all things optic. But the black void is logical for a fish. More important, consider the location of the light source and the shadow below the eye. These things give a tired and sorrowful bent to the fish's face. It's a simple application for a simple creature, but it carries a lot of emotional heft. This is something that many many many of the simple pieces woot prints simply do not have: emotion, or conceptual heft. They're lightweight pieces. They exist for cute and shine. This has both, yes, but the way it is put together makes it far more than that. And therein is the purpose of the commentary. I simply don't think you could make an educated comparison between the two and not come to identical findings.

But whenever I look at the fish all I see is that the number of fins is wrong and they don't have gills and augh my brain it hurts.
It's like seeing a cat with 8 legs or a human with 3 arms and a missing nose. *twitches sadly in fish biologist corner*

I'm in love with this shirt. It was an 'aw' reaction, and then an 'oh', and now I'm sad. I feel like the one floating away isn't going to come out of this adventure so well, and I feel terrible for the one that's all alone.

After a couple of days, I've pin-pointed *exactly* why this shirt makes me cry every time I look at it.

I've been in a long distance relationship for a couple of years now. I was the spaceman fishy who flew 3000 miles away to follow my dreams, but still feels immensely guilty every day about leaving the fishy that loves me behind. :'(

I think people are really reacting to the text rather than the actual art. The title implies that the fish is going on some sort of odyssey, perhaps never to return.

I don't get that feeling from the picture, neither do I get the emotion from the eye to which Adder is referring.

The illustration is good though, but the fish could use some fins. Now, they look like amphibians to me.

The funny thing is--when I first looked at this shirt I thought that the skyfish was coming to save/take away the waterfish. It wasn't until I started reading the comments that I reviewed it and saw the sorrow element. Anyway...still love it. Maybe I'm dumb.

I really like your color use, especially on the underwater half of the fish vs the upper half. And the colors of the fish with the balloon against the sky. It's really effective, and I think it also adds to the mood quite a bit.

I agree. I like this shirt a lot, but after visualizing myself with this shirt on, I'm afraid that it might look more like a fish returning from the epic odyssey rather than embarking on one, especially with the bottom fish's "arms" open in welcome. The title adds a lot of emotion that otherwise isn't conveyed as clearly in the art. But I guess the fun part will be telling the story to curious people. =)

I dunno. If someone asked me to explain a piece of clothing, I'd probably just say that it means whatever you want it to mean. Unless I'm trying to strike up a conversation. Then this could be an easy thing to talk about.

In this genre of art I think sometimes one needs to suspend one's disbelief. That being said, if I think about it too much it troubles me that the fins are scaly. I think that might be part of what makes people think that they aren't fish.

I do love the shirt though. Would love it more if it had the title. The title just adds and enhances that extra dimension of meaning and emotion.

I concur. Thought it was good constructive criticism. Might not look that way if you have a shirt posted on here... but I don't.
