A big eyed fish, yeah, swimming in the sea,
Oh, how he dreamed. He wants to be a bird,
Swooping, diving through the breeze.
One day, he caught a big blue wave,
Up onto the beach, and now he's dead.
You see, a fish's dream, should stay in the sea.

glad I wasn't the only one to think of Major Tom!

Standing there alone,
the ship is waiting.
All systems are go.
"Are you sure?"
Control is not convinced,
but the computer
has the evidence.
No need to abort.
The countdown starts.

Watching in a trance,
the crew is certain.
Nothing left to chance,
all is working.
Trying to relax
up in the capsule
"Send me up a drink."
jokes Major Tom.
The count goes on...

4, 3, 2, 1
Earth below us
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
calling, calling home...

Second stage is cut.
We're now in orbit.
Stabilizers up,
runnning perfect.
Starting to collect
requested data.
"What will it affect
when all is done?"
thinks Major Tom.

Back at ground control,
there is a problem.
"Go to rockets full."
Not responding.
"Hello Major Tom.
Are you receiving?
Turn the thrusters on.
We're standing by."
There's no reply.

4, 3, 2, 1
Earth below us
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
calling, calling home...

Across the stratosphere,
a final message:
"Give my wife my love."
Then nothing more.

Far beneath the ship,
the world is mourning.
They don't realize
he's alive.
No one understands,
but Major Tom sees.
"Now the light commands
this is my home,
I'm coming home."

Earth below us
drifting, falling.
Floating weightless
coming home...
Earth below us

Floating weightless
coming, coming
home...
home.....

I liked this a lot, as well as yesterdays shirt, but I knew something bugged me about it and it just hit me. The fish have no fins on top of them. I think it would have made them look a bit more balanced.

Freaky coincidence: check out the side art at teefury.com today.

I like BootsBoots's much better though.

I still really love the colors on this, congrats

You're right about the orange border being different. Actually, it looks like Woot altered several aspects of the design. It appears to have been on asphalt in the derby; it's now on navy. The halftones all seem very different. The colors are now much more saturated. etc.

I still bought this immediately, even though I much prefer Boots' original (pre-print) version. Major tip of the hat to you, Boots. Thanks for coming up with this wonderful design, it'll sell out in no time.

...I swear I've probably listened to "Space Oddity" thirty times this past week.

There's nothing about that derby submission that lends to an 'asphalt' shirt color. You need to probably check your monitor settings if you think that's asphalt. It's definitely navy.

As for the orange, don't immediately say "woot changed it". It's likely boots changed it in her art file when she sent it in. And as for the saturation of colors, when the comp is put together, it's a higher resolution than what we submit as our jpg's for the derby. Perhaps when they created the close up, the colors became more true than the derby jpg.

It's true. It's the same. The orange halftones are there in my original comp, they just got a little faded out when I resized. If you look closely, you can see them there. Everything got a tiny bit more faded actually.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Is it weird to say that I'm happy it makes people sad? I intended it to be both funny and sad. Major Tom's stuck in my head now, but that's ok. The last song to get stuck in there was the Indiana Jones theme, and this is a welcome change.

I hadn't seen that in your sig yet.

The dolphins did this many years ago,but they left under their own power.

Was Fish Out Of Water from Chicken Little one of the inspirations for this shirt? 'Cause I love that little guy..

Sadly, no. But, here's a list of things this design may or may not have been inspired by:

Chicken Little: No.
Finding Nemo: No.
Major Tom: Probably subconsciously.
Fish from The Cat in the Hat: No, he's a jerk.
Balloon Boy: No.
Hitchhiker's Guide: No... but I do love it so.
Klaus from American Dad: No.
Bruce Willis in Armageddon: Strangely, yes.

Good job Boots. I always love your style.
I noticed it looked different from the comp as well. I actually pulled up the submission version to compare before I read the thread. Can't say it looks better or worse, just different. Or at least more different than normal.

As if it wasn't hard enough to resist spending money I don't have...that is is inspired by Bruce Willis in Armageddon is nearly too much. Wow...amazing job, Boots!

But it does kind of look like the Cat in the Hat fish... and he's not such a bad guy. If someone gave HIM a balloon and let him out of his bowl once in a while maybe he wouldn't have been such a jerk!

BootsBoots, you are very talented. This is a great design.

So I actually hafta give ARMAGEDDON credit for something good? Blerg.

There's no direct connection "plot-wise," but when I first saw the image with the title, it reminded me of a black-n-white comic from HEAVY METAL, way back when. An astronaut blasts off on a mission, leaving his pregnant wife behind, and while he's in orbit, their child is born. Of course, something weirder goes on at the same time, but I won't spoil.

Regardless, love it for being epic and intimate in a Far-Sidean way.

Amagoi

I think this is so sad because of the way the little fish on the bottom looks. He's reaching out so desperately for the fish that's flying away, and he even dark circles.

He must have been deprived of sleep while the other fish was building his helmet of epicness.

"No, Billy...it's just a vase I'm making in ceramics class...I swear to God, man!"

I really love this though, I think I may just have to buy it.

midga59

Love it, but I won't buy it. Makes me want to cry...
