Re: The Pica Republic

I want to add to my nation description...

Another popular sport is running. On sentences. Unfortunately, it's almost as bad for the environment as those pesky comma splices.

Get it? Run-on sentences?

Nobody understands my humour.

fablefire wrote:That's true. Half the time I don't want to know what's in the sausage anyway.

If they're anything like hot dogs then they've probably got a lot of fillers and low-grade meat. There are some companies that use the good stuff, but sausage is so strongly flavored that they can hide a lot of junk inside and people tend not to notice.

Or cheese.

Heheh... there's a place in Manhattan that wraps hot dogs in bacon and then deep fries them. :-)

Ha! I spent more than a decade in publishing production. I *will* buy this T-shirt. I will probably buy gifties for my word-geek friends, too. Hee!

You may want to consider working on a second design, though, as I think Woot will reject this one for being "all text." Plan your design elements carefully and try and build a unified composition.

I roughened up the text a little bit more for the next version. Still has the same feel but now has a little more texture. You can see it here: http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/2387/printready3dj6.jpg

Any ideas of what to add to it?

Ba-dum-bump.

Considering I am addicted to ellipses, I got the joke right away when I read what you wrote and thought about sentences and
silly grammatical rules that no one seems to follow unless they're really obsessed with writing and words and all that good stuff
(which some people don't consider to be good stuff since they ignore it all of the time) and I would add a comma splice or two
in here but just doing a full-on run-on is too much work for my brain when I spend most of my time correcting things like this... {INHALE}

I'm actually in Engineering, but English was my third choice (behind design, ha!) if I didn't get into engineering (which was unlikely). The other day I submitted a poetry portfolio to try for a poetry workshop course thinger...

Archaeologists have yet to discover any fully-intact treasures buried in the soils of the Pica Republic, but they have discovered many fragments. Sentence fragments.

Re: Angel's Egg

What is this doing in this derby? It kind of looks like the logo for a "jam band" tour shirt like phish or something. No offense to the designer, I just don't see how it fits into this derby.

Oh Dear eHalcyon,
You take offence where absolutely none was intended. I REALLY, sincerely am behind this design and was not throwing about accusations re the Mini Cooper wings. It's just that you can't throw a Kleenex in my country without hitting a Mini (usually the old Brit. ones). Mini is just so much a part of our cultural landscape that I was responding out of my experience. I can easily see how an American may not be so familiar with this element of design.
Sorry if I offended and I'll be even sorrier if this does not win!

No no, you didn't offend me, and I didn't think it was an accusation at all! Someone else mentioned it looked like a flight patch. The wings are just a common element in heraldry, emblem design and whatnot.

I'm sorry I sounded offended. Ah, so much apologizing.

Anyway, thank-you for your support.

Out of curiosity, are you in England? I'm not American, but a bit farther north.

Ahh. My high school's motto was "Fortes Fortuna Juvat", which is "fortune favours the strong".

I'm not sure if you noticed, but I suggested some additions to your derby guide during the last derby.

I'm enjoying the comments as much as the shirt. Very clever, very cute, voted and will buy or try to buy... I just remembered I will be on a cruise when this derby comes up. :-( Lets hope it makes first place!!! I can still get it, then.

If it's a fancy cruise, shouldn't they have wireless internet?

I'm hoping some other people would be willing to add to my nation's history with their own typographical tales.

Thanks for the support!

Thanks for the positive comments; I guess I'm not the only coffee fiend out there! And a special thanks to anne1704 for supplying me with the correct Latin (stoopid online translator). If you're so inclined, you can re-vote for the updated version here: Coffeetopia v2

That's interesting. How about some bacon fried chicken to go with your chicken fried bacon? :-)

What would happen if you bacon-fried bacon or chicken-fried chicken?

I think we need to do a tofurkey-style dish but incorporate deep-fried bacon, chicken, steak, etc. And cheese. Gotta have cheese.

Did you know they've had deep-fried coke orbs? Not drugs, but the soft drink. And deep-fried ice cream. I want to try them both...

Re: The Roar of Basstown

Okay, back on the computer now. University of North Texas is actually a pretty good sized school, just north of Dallas. Bruce Jam is a music festival that takes place twice a year in the campus's oldest resident hall, Bruce Hall (former residents include Norah Jones, Meat Loaf, and Don Henley). Some bands and performers that had performed at Bruce Jam and you might have heard of include Norah Jones, Radiomotive, and Lift to Experience.
I worked at UNT and was the hall director at that hall a few years ago. The design for this shirt came from one of our R.A.s. His name was Scott... and I can't remember his last name. Anyway, the shirt design was done as a contest, very similar to the Woot derby. Different residents would offer up a design and everyone would vote on them. The one with the most most votes would be printed. There were some issues with this shirt because several people said the lion was clearly taken from clip art with a guitar thrown in, clearly lacking in originality or artistic merit. We had to reject a few other designs because they were, for lack of better terms, just nasty. We didn't have much left to work with. Anyway, we ended up printing 500 of these shirts in various sizes and sold out of them.
I currently work in the legal field and have done considerable work in Intellectual Property (copyrights, patents, trademarks, etc.). There are still original ideas out in this big world of ours. In the last several derbies, some people (I don't want to use the words "artist" or "designer") have lifted clip art for their submissions. Some of them have been rejected. Just don't lift clip art for your submission and say it's an original piece of art when other people spend hours on their original submissions.
My own artistic ability is about zero. I enjoy seeing everyone's design and voting on what I really like and what I would buy and wear. I suspect I will now be ripped to shreds by several people for this post, but just stating an explaination of my issues is just as valid as "GMV." Everyone have a good day.
