I wouldn't change it for the world. I didnt make this design to please everyone on here. I made because I enjoyed it. Dont vote for it just because I represented Marley after you bashed the colors. Next time, I will e-mail you my design and let you put in the color since you know so much.

The squirrel looks (to me) very scared, and is clearly offering up the only thing they have in the world in the faint hope that it will let them escape the inevitable. Which it almost certainly won't.

Frankly, while phenomenally well executed (seriously, bravo), it makes me more than a little sad.

I don't know, I see the little guy being quite unconcerned with his own wellbeing and simply looking to make a friend, even in the most unlikely of characters. That's pretty optimistic to try and befriend death himself if you ask me :p

Is woot really so devoid of serious designers now that this is OK? "Oh, well it's on the way to the fog, so it's alright." Seriously? Man, in that case why didn't they print the photo of the fat infatuated kid that made it into the fog during the Dessert derby? What about Chuck Norris in pigtails? How could that have been rejected? It's in the fog and people like it, it must be worth printing, right? Popularity is the only rubric by which quality can be judged! Which means Milli Vanilli and Vanilla Ice are still the cornerstones of musical enlightenment. Which means Twilight is the great American novel. Which means remakes of classic films are more vital than the originals. So to the fog with these gorgeous stick people! Disposable "art" is the only real art anyway. So says the United States of Idiocy.

Get over yourself. Sometimes to articulate a simple idea you need a simple image. Besides, as stick figures go these are extremely artistic.

Re: Easy Optimism

Wow. Sorry about your comments.

I am not going to leap into the pseudo-intellectual fray here by directly responding to anyone's battlecries, but I will give my opinion. I think using stick figures for this design is genius. Just like you, I don't think the joke would be as instantly accessable if you'd used more detailed artwork. In fact, I think it would get in the way of the simple, clever punchline. Not every concept calls for beautiful, richly shaded and impeccably detailed vector work. Not every T-Shirt needs to pass for fine art (after all, they're just T-shirts).

Kudos for not letting the snippy comments get you down, but if that starts to happen, just think of what E. E. Cummings might have gone through if there was such a thing as poetry.woot!

"More of this avant garde, uncapitalized gibberish? What is this site coming to?!"

Thanks for the excellent design. I'll be getting one if you make it through the fog.

Vote for something you do like, and applaud those artists for their wonderful detail, concepts, or even stick figures.

Why yes, stick figures are SO avant garde. That is why children make them.

Drat! I've been discovered! >.> <.<.

The truth is: I created an account because one of my friends was always raving about the site but nothing every really struck me as something I would order on a whim. I'm not too loose with money. But when I saw that shirt I knew I had to have it and I logged on for the first time since I joined. Just thought that saying "joined" would sound better than "logged on".

And my apologies for mistaking for a dude sekiyoku. My bad. As an apology I swear to purchase enough shirts to build a massive quilt of hilarity. =P

eHalcyon wrote:@OnyxEyez - Thanks! I was surprised and delighted to see it making a run at the fog again.

@realitytwist - I hope this makes it so you aren't disappointed!

@sbaszto - I was actually going for a more "blissfully unaware" feeling, where the monster doesn't know all the mayhem he's caused. My take on the theme was not "optimism in a a bleak situation". Rather, I wanted to show an individual that was simply optimistic in nature, always looking at life like it's wonderful.

@DeadFrog - Thanks for the defence!

@Oeberon - I was told the same by someone else too. Writing silly poems like this is a nice break from the usual stuff I do.

@Schrobbs - I haven't submitted for several months, so it's not a big deal. Nice to have you back, sir!

@PhilSandifer - Thanks for your comment, and I appreciate the input. Re the lack of "any real energy" - I think I agree. What do you think would have been a good way to convey more energy? My first thought now is the addition of motion lines to show the monster's movement, but I don't really like motion lines - I don't think they mesh with my thick-lined style, since they just come out looking clunky.

@HeartlineTwist - Thanks for defending my work as well.

@Xanzibar - Much appreciated, Xanz.

@PhilSandifer - A friend of mine mentioned the meltiness as well. Re: the contrast between the monster and the background - that is exactly what I was going for. I wanted to differentiate the foreground and the background to, as sekiyoku said, "give the perception of depth". I tried to do this through my colour choices (using a dark green for the silhouette) and through the style - i.e. no outline around the background. I'll admit that the melted appearance of the buildings was actually not intentional, in that I didn't mean for them to look melted. However, I did intend for the cityscape to look messy and NOT clean or crisp, since it is supposed to be a city in chaos following the destructive wake of the monster. I deliberately avoided the use of straight lines and right angles, since that would imply a relative lack of destruction. The intended feeling I had in mind for the silhouettes was that of ruins and rubble, with separate buildings having fallen and crumbled into one another, forming a single massive heap of debris. Given your description, I'd say that I succeeded.

@sekiyoku - That was my explanation when my friend pointed out the melting. As I said above, I avoided the use of an outline for the buildings because they are background elements and shouldn't be as sharply defined as the foreground. When I was new to the derbies I tried to use six colours every time. Now, however, I feel that I shouldn't go out of my way to use the extra colour(s) if I don't have to. In this case, I don't think I do.

@PhilSandifer - I think that the use of right angles would actually have clashed with the monster rather than meshing better. If you look at the monster, you'll see that it's made up almost entirely of curves. The buildings are similarly smooth and rounded out. Overall, I believe it adds to the whimsy of the scene. Right angles would have detracted from that, in my opinion. But again, thank-you for the constructive criticism.

Thank-you everyone for this last-minute push. I am honestly floored, stunned, and [insert more synonyms of ecstatic disbelief]. I am actually feeling optimistic for a third place finish now! My only regret is that it would be at the expense of tgentry's design, which I personally feel is the best of the fog both in idea and in execution.
