Oh Mr. Kringle, is soon gonna jingle,
The bells that'll tinkle all your troubles away
Everybody's waitin' for the man with the bag,
'Cause christmas is comin' again.

He's got a sleighfull, that's not gonna stay-full
He's got stuff to drop at every stop on the way
Everybody's waitin' for the man with the bag,
'Cause christmas is comin' again.

He'll be here,
With the answers to the prayers that you made through the year
You'll get yours
If you've done everything you should, extra-special good.

He'll make this December, the one you'll remember,
The best and the merriest you ever did have
Everybody's waitin' for the man with the bag
Christmas is here again!

Better watch out now!

Derby #107: Bags

Don’t get us wrong, we love our Shirt.Woot bag. But we have needs. Needs that might be better met in an open-bag relationship. Could you be one of those special someones who designs the shirt package of our dreams? Could this be the chance to realize your commercial package design dreams? Well, let’s both of us stop dreaming, because there’s some weird stuff you gotta keep in mind for this one.

* All submissions must use our bag template, in AI, EPS, or PSD format.
* Designs can use only three ink colors: black, Shirt.Woot blue, and Shirt.Woot yellow.
* The bag must be white.
* Designs must incorporate our exclamation-point mark, included in each template. This can be scaled but not stretched, skewed, or otherwise altered. The exclamation point must be white on a solid background of black, Shirt.Woot blue, or Shirt.Woot yellow.
* 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will receive a flat fee of $1000 and no commissions.
* You will be credited by name on the printed bags. Do not use the strip across the top of the template, which is set aside for this purpose.
* We’re not necessarily looking for Shirt.Woot-themed designs. Do whatever, as long as it includes our mark and follows all the other rules, for this Derby and the Derby in general.
* We reserve the right to reject entries that don’t meet our standards or reflect on our company in ways we don’t like. We’ll be sending these bags to thousands of people for a long time to come, so we have in an interest in them not being too crappy, obnoxious, or stupid.
* Derby #107 opens for entries at noon on Friday, August 7.

All those rules for a work of art that will be thrown away by everybody who gets it? That’s commerce for you.

So we can all find it later:

JadenKale wrote:Overdone Panders/Fads @ Woot:

Panders:
Cats
Bunnies
Dragons
Unicorns/Narwhals
Pandas
Animals posing as other animals
Birds
Trees
Pirates
Ninjas
Robots
Dandelions (and dandelion seeds)
Octopi/Cephalopods
Koi
Kiwi (both fruit and bird)
Flying Penguins
Anthropomorphic Food

Fads:
Abstract (to the point it's nearly impossible that it's on theme)
Splatter
Distressing
Overuse of halftones
Anime (in general)
Cute (without whimsy)
The overuse of asphalt tees

I foresee a few fads (not so much panders, at the moment) for Woot in the future:
Overuse of negative space: I love this style but I can see it being overdone quickly. Although, I could see a derby theme designed around this.
Watercolors: They seem to be the big thing elsewhere online... I can see it ending up here.
Glow In The Dark/Metallic Inks: Heaven forbid woot ever allow these in derbies.

Helpful link for you bag designers:

acobjoe wrote:Hey everyone, I hope this is helpful to you. I made a blank comp psd from a woot bag that I hadn't thrown out yet. It's complete with shading and a rough print area. Here's a screenshot of the comp:

And here's a link to the zipped psd.

Has anyone else been thinking about this derby's design?
It's tough coming up with something clever for a bag... @_@

I've got two ideas, which are making an homage to the first 100 derbies in an abstract way. Anything showing the "art of designing" or t-shirt making might go over well too.

I love it! I think it's so cute and it would make me happy to open my mailbox and see that. I'm working on a couple bag designs right now. I'll post them here when I'm done.

Dr. Joe - I think you should submit something with your snail drawing for the shirt bag.

Doesn't the bag get folded so you only see half at a time? Or does the design only get printed on one half of the folded bag?

If it's like their current bag, the design will cover one side of it.

I'm 50% done with mine... an ode to all the derby winners. Yeah, it shafts the dailies, but hey, the site is known for the awesome winners, not the eh dailies.

Crab. They outlawed text. Which means I can't finish- IE- plan B is stupid if I can't have text. Same thing can be said for several others.
