Re: Rockin Robin

I'm really sad this isn't in the fog. It's really kind of in it's own league as far as illustration goes. I hope perhaps you can submit it to another venue . I would love to own another one of your shirts! <--recently bought one from ShirtFight

Awww, I really like this one Jasneko! He makes me want to curl up and snuggle. I love the little dollie too :D. Nice work!

yeah, I thought of the Pixar short, too. It's crazy how similar it is, since you haven't seen the Pixar bit...

it's cute but I wouldn't buy it because it's a confusing conflation of the two ideas, big bird and Pixar (though unintentional).

Reminds me a bit of a past entry where a hand is drawing a hand (or something to that effect) but still pretty well drawn. I'm almost more interested in the model than the item being modeled though :D

Maybe the title should have been "Defying Gravity." Maybe more people would have clicked on it since it was a song on Glee.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the better Edgar's work is, the less likely it will print?

tjost wrote:I like the flow this design has from the top right to bottom left. I'm getting a retro vibe on it too ala Partridge Family or the old NBC Peacock. 2 things though I wish the thumb portrayed a little more of the piece and less text, and the blue for the body looks a little off to me. I know I know peacocks are super cobalt but maybye shifting to a blue with a little more green tints to it, it's been my experience that blues in that range have poor color fastness on a non based white shirt (lots of shirt fibralation and a funky problem with the pigment particles as they pass through the screen). Anyways nice piece.

I actually tried a traditional color set with this and felt there was a disconnect with the green, turquoise and cobalt. I had this need to add purple (possibly as a 4th color) and I spent an hour messing with the hues. I decided on this, because I wanted something that stood out from head to tail, and the combo of purple and turquoise make a big impact with the space it takes up, so the bird, itself, needed to be just as vibrant and strong. It balances the design this way.

As for the thumbnail, I already commented on that above. It would have lost impact if I shrunk it for the thumb.

I'm glad you like it, though.

Re: The Crane's Mortal Enemy

Great job Kris, I really like it, though after looking at your site and seeing some of the amazing pieces you've done I just wish the crane and mantis had more detail, ala your incubus shirt. Looks like you have a couple unused pieces on there that are ripe for this derby too... Keep it up.

BTW, did you design your site from scratch or are you using anything, I like the layout

There's a centered version also up, just fyi:

When I saw his submission on the last derby, I was confused by it's total irrelevance.

while walking through target today, I stumbled upon a DVD with this exact artwork on it - it's apparently some movie..i burst out laughing.

Something about this is hilarious to me...

bassanimation wrote:Thanks for your comment. I think people greatly, greatly misunderstand me here on Woot. I defend a lot of the things here because I feel people and art are _wrongly_ attacked. It's hard to explain here without being picked apart. If you need a better explanation please pm me. I'm happy to talk to people off-site.

My belief is that you genuinely haven't been around long enough to notice the pattern and that perhaps it's not you that's being misunderstood but you that misunderstands what's been going on here in the long term. People say it all the time, but there's a lot of history here, and it takes quite a bit of effort to read through and process all of it, especially if you're new. PMed you.

I'm reminded of your bicycle entry from way back when. You do really great monotone designs on cream. (No, I'm not being facetious--you do great work within those parameters, something very few designers pull off.)

That being said, the feet kind of looked weird to me, too.

Comparatively, chibi-desu is like Nickelback. It might be done purely by one's own hand, but if it's all boring and the same, who cares? A good parody is BETTER, because it still requires being hand-crafted, but also RELIES on a strong concept, where the Nickelback designs certain people give require nothing but a formula the same schlubs without doing anything of worth.

I think this is my favorite use of an analogy by Adder ever.

Thanks for such an eloquent defense of real parody, btw. It gets lost amidst all the fan art here and tends to get painted with the same brush, but a well-executed, clever parody is a great thing.

Re: bird in tree

I like your username, Dirtyfork. ><

And as long as I'm here, I might as well try to help you out a bit. As for your design, I would suggest cropping/sizing your shirt comp to the correct size (580x580, I think?) before you submit it. It looks a little blurry to me, maybe some artifacts from it shrinking/being blown up?

Also, and this took me a while when I first started submitting stuff, make sure you try to squeeze an image in the shirt comp of the design that's large enough for all of us to see. I can't tell what's going on right now with the size that it's at.

Good luck!
