I love your positive take on grim reality. I don't think it will be received well, but I get it. This is a rare case where you either have to go happy, or grim. No half-measures. This is a half-measure and really is fun. You have a great take on the theme, and I want to see more from you!

Cutesy eyes! of course. Oh well, almost Thursday. It is all about having fun, and the derby certainly is. Thanks for the feedback, looking forward to more wooting. woot woot!

thank you kindly for the compliment on my shirt quality. i will admit i have felt a similar frustration and it has kept me from submitting as many designs as i might otherwise... i still think that it is a really cool system and a smart business model, but i also wish that there was more of a respect for the "art shirts" and mayhaps a little less obsession with the "joke shirts" that have largely been dominating the derbys of late...

but then if that is what the people want, then i suppose that is what they will vote for the most...

maybe im just not clever and funny enough to win a woot derby, but i will keep trying to create shirts with cool artwork on them in hopes that maybe someday one will rise above the jokes and win.

thanks again!

and keep voting!

When this prints somewhere else--and it will...this shirt is too awesome not to print--I'm definitely buying one. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten a lot of attention thus far in the derby.

Re: Tree Dance

A design like this is very hard to wear, since there is a huge amount of ink all together. I makes the shirt heavy and hot.

It also appears to have 7 colors:
red
yellow
brown
blue
olive
dark green
light green

nicely done. It reminds me of the section of World War Z where they talk about the spring thaw releasing the zombies that froze during the winter. Having to go out and finish them off before they are completely thawed out.

I need to go read that book again...

Thanks for all the kind words and praises everybody!

I really appreciate all of the feedback, as does my sister, and it really blew our minds to see a design of ours do so well. I'm certain it's not going to get the 300-600 votes that it would need to win within the remaining time of the derby, but we're incredibly happy with how many we got anyway.

Now we just have to figure out how to top this one! Thanks again! :D

@ odysseyroc: Thanks man! In hindsight there are things I'd change (and I will in time). I'd like to do complete designs like this more often. It's just a question of being able to work to the woot deadline! ^__^

That, and learn. I'm here to learn more than anything else. And learning what people like and vote on is part of the process. I'm not saying I'll ever be able to make heads or tails out of what works, let alone be able to produce that particular formula (or want to). But I can keep taking it in and see if it ever clicks...

Re: Springtime! What a relief!

apparently the rejectionator doesn't care enough to offer any sort of explanation whatsoever as to why this is "off-topic", yet a picture of a bottle of water shaped like a coil spring is okay. The topic is Spring (the season) and this shirt got rejected for no reason, that's all there is to it. The potty-humor can't be the problem, since there's a shirt with a dung beetle rolling a giant ball of crap that didn't get rejected.

vividimaginer wrote:the illustration style doesn't really speak to me, i think it could benefit from some cleanup.

however, the concept is 100% spot-on and i think the rejectionator needs to review the shirt. make some edits where you feel they're necessary and resubmit, because a concept this good shouldn't be down with the rest of the rejected dirge.

Thanks for your feedback. I did the design fairly quickly because I wanted to get it in early thinking the longer it was in the derby the better our chances would be. This is our first submission and I was banking more on the idea as opposed to the art. But the shirt got rejected pretty early so it really didn't matter anyway. I do feel my art is a little one dimesional and doesn't really 'pop' off the shirt. I wanted to use more colors to add a little depth but was afraid of going over the limit. In my first experience in the derby, I've noticed that design and presentation in some cases trumps concept, so our future submissions should be a lot more pleasing to the eye. But I've learned, with art, you really can't please everyone.

Thanks again!

You have a good argument with the other stuff you wrote, but this statement is completely personal/bias and is invalid to make your points. Drakxxx had two Cthulhu shirts print recently. Should he not have done that? Quality aside, and yes they were very well done, and I'm not comparing designers here, but it happens. There is nothing wrong with having the same animal/item/whatever in designs if they are different. How many people have done numerous robot shirts, or shirts with skulls on them? I could go on, but I think/hope you get my point.

Salinga wrote:That's because they kept getting banned -because- there were too many bunny entries before the ban?

No, because too many people were crying about it. Check the designs and winners over the past year, and you will find there are more robots shirts by far. I haven't seen them banned once. Why? Less people complaining about it.

Even when there have been more bunny designs, they didn't even win, and people would still complain about there being too many. If they don't win and don't make other shirts lose, then complaining about there being too many is just idiocy. That just means people want to complain just to complain.

Don't look at the bunny designs if you hate them so much. Is that such a hard concept to grasp? I don't like zombie shirts and wish there were less... guess what I do. I don't look at them, and I don't post complaining how there should be less. Why? Because I would be a whining fool if I did... especially if they had not been winning or even banned for a while.

You just prove my point even more. Thank you. They have been banned and not been around much, so why are people complaining that there are too many cute bunny shirts if they were not even allowed to be entered? Am I just not clear or are people really lacking cognitive thought?

odysseyroc wrote:I've come to grips with the fact that I'll likely never win one of these things. I still participate because it's a great chance to push your skills, and do something better than you did the week previous. There's also the thing about having to think fast and come up with a concept in such a short amount of time.

It's impossible to know what the voter here are going to like. I've seen some stuff that I thought was a guaranteed win, that didn't even fog and stuff that I thought would never have a chance, that shot right to the top. The best you can do is just design stuff to please yourself and be satisfied knowing that you're pushing yourself creatively.

Thank you, odysseyrock, for reminding me why I do/should continue to do this derby. I'm not saying I deserved to win this week -- I've done better designs that haven't. But the jolt to get me to draw something original every week is definitely valuable.

I do not have a problem with the penguins - I am sure I could buy this shirt for my wife and she would like it. I get the cartoony style he is going for and have no problem with somebody who sticks to what he can do.
But I do agree that the standing penguin has a problem with her eyes and feet and think that maybe a bit more time and a resub could help.

raevynpheather wrote:As far as the shirt goes, great design, I would have bought it. It is too bad that the guys that run the derbies prefer the artsy crap and are so anti-awesome.

At least good shirts do slip through the cracks now and then, hence why I own over 30 shirts (most of which are made by Ramby, Seki, have bunnies, or are video game references).

"The guys that run the derbies" are not the people who vote, so preferring "artsy crap" and being "anti-awesome" isn't an issue to take with them, but with the voters. That said, the guys who run the derbies do define the rules for the derbies. This designer chose to violate those rules, blatantly (as I recall, one of the rules of the derbies is to read the rules of the derby you're submitting for). Now this designer faces the consequences ... and can submit the design somewhere else that has no rules. He/she may actually be ahead of the game for being rejected if that means he/she doesn't have to wait 60 days.
