That's kind of what bothers me about some people complaining that certain artists use the same styles all the time. As an artist, I know people have 'styles', or natural ways they do things. We all start out making the art that we like, and making it look how we want it to look. Not everyone is cut out to do art that looks different each time. Plus, if you do go that rout, you run the risk of not building a real group of people who are drawn to your personal style, the style that you yourself put most of your passion into.

solid concept and love the lone silohuette.
The rain is bit understated. the puzzle pieces rock. only crit is the black in the one piece. after looking closely did I finally realize them the be birds. a bit distracting. I might remove them, IMO.
But great entry nonetheless. Voted!

A superb job on the illustration. The scene is elegant and romantic. I have to agree with the cropping look and the shirt color choice. Would look much better on a cream color shirt or perhaps lose the outline and place it on a brown. my 2 cents.

Ok, so I know I'm no artist, but I just had this idea in my head and I wanted to put it out there since no one seemed interested in using it

The guy in the design has all the elements of a rainstorm organized like an orchestra and he's about to the lead them in a masterpiece of natural sounds

chumpmagic wrote:I haven't been here for too long, but it also seems like dropping a popular reference always get some good attention over something that is original. It may not win, but it seems to get more votes than it's actual worth (not in all cases).

Most of the long lasting shirts in the reckoning are referencing something popular. All except impostor I believe, yet that may be referencing something I am unaware of. It's something familiar, that they know and love, with a new twist.

And I like how we "chose" to dissect the voters in my art's comments :P I am not being sarcastic; I feel honored... somehow.

If there was a shirt "SPOCK LOL!" that had a copyrighted photo of Spock wearing three wolf moon, it would sell out in about 5 seconds. It doesn't take much to have huge popular appeal on woot, and the best designs rarely do. I love that Drakxxx and Crescentdebris have had as much success as they have had in printing, even though their sales are never through the roof. The lowest common denominator tends to fare better here, especially if it's referential. The very best derby designs tend to need the Editor's Choice to print (like Nightlife this week) with some exceptions in artsits who frequently manage to create designs that are both interesting, original, and can muster the votes to print (like Walmazan, Tgentry, Drakxxx/Crescentdebris).

I don't come to woot to see reference shirts, though. I love seeing talented artists produce interesting designs, even if those don't always print. My favorite artists are those who never compromise their visions, and always produce work that is distinct and wonderful.

I agree 100% with your first paragraph. For your second one, I don't quite agree, in that I don't think people complain so much about styles as they do elements and execution. Walmazan and Drakxxx, for example, have very distinct styles, and no one complains about them. I can usually pinpoint a CMDixon, Jewelwing, or Tgentry design from the thumbnail as well. I'm getting there with your designs too.

Things that people are more keen to complain about, like fuzzy animals and levels of originality, aren't elements of style, but of content and composition. A style is one's own, and will be one's own whether they're producing amazing, original designs, or images bunnies eating lollipops in a golden meadow without a hint of irony.

And I hope I'm coming off like a blowhard here. I'm not an artist, but I loves me some t-shirt art, and I like to think I can speak with some knowledge on the matter. I also more than dabble in writing and poetry, where many of the same issues arise.

Awwww. This will probably label me as a hopeless softy, but this shirt made me tear up a little. I mean, poor soggy cat, out in the cold, wet weather, and its shadow shows how happy it could be! Also, poor plant, with it's wiltedness.

D=

Your shirt makes me so sad I want to buy them all and wear them when I volunteer at the animal shelter, or possibly just when walking around to guilt people into getting a stray cat.

I have never owned a shirt with a cat on it, but I'd have to get two of this one. Great design, great color scheme, love the shadows. Wish more awesomeness came thru in the thumbnail, I almost skipped over it.

I have been waiting for a design this good since I found out shirt.woot existed. It willl happily be my first. It's the wallpaper on my phone already (thanks for the detail), and I'm already waiting for the package at my door. If I could vote twice I would.

Next week I am planning to simplify my entry...(if that is even possible for me) So please look for my NEW LOOK! I am thinking "something easy to print, or even printable" for a change! I am going to try. And I may try to even be funny.
Which I am not.

This should be good!

MIdge, I am new to the halftone (Gradients are NOT allowed, so don't use those ever, they are not printable. You need a nice clean halftone, not tiny either, it will clog up the screens.)thing too...this is the 2nd time I have used one .

I used a brush tool to draw the clouds...I just kept messing around with the brush tools untiI I found one that looked closest to what I wanted

and I can't remember which one I used so I will have to play around next time I want to do this again just like you will...then my design guru (to whom the computer is like playing the piano...) showed me how to turn that into a bitmap. And I also forget how that happened.

Midge, if I incorporate this type of stuff into my design this week I will send you a pm about it..

Maybe this info will help a little...it really didn't take me but a few minutes to locate a brush tool that was working for me.So I am sur you can do it too...then it's the bitmap thing.

Does anyone else have any wisdom to add here on the halftone issue?

Re: Never Too Old

Good luck....your artwork (My favorite shown here above) is beautifully done and halftones WOULD be nice to have , to enhance your artwork as you see fit, but really love this one as is( and if this gives perspective... alot of the greats here (Walmazan for example) don't seem to rely on halftones(They have to be beautifully done (Like Patrickspens or Crescent debris/Draxxx ...)But if you don't start you can't have , so good luck to us both as we enter the half tone arena!!!! I think it's all about the brush tool.

Cute and creative as always an imaginative image, good one!

(I idid see your pm...I haven't figured out how to answer it because I have had a very huge enormous fun filled yet completely wipe me out exhausting week... yesterday I began doing laundry, dishes , mopping..I have been living on popcorn and coffee and coca cola.

then I just gave up and collapsed in bed . My kids were like, whatever!

And it rained, so it was a perfect day to do what I did.

Hope you have a great week. I will look for your design next week!
