Namaste! This week we're launching another country-themed Derby and inviting you along as we trek to India, the (former) jewel of the crown. Not that it's not still a jewel; there's just significantly less crown involved. We're getting off track. Anyway, we want to see shirts inspired by incredibly ornate and detailed Indian art, art full of "voluptuous feeling" and "sensuousness." Whether you're inspired by sculpture, painting, the intricate patterns of henna art, shimmering textiles, the rich history, or simply the natural beauty of the subcontinent, let it all out. We'll be busy on our end trying to set up Sari.Woot. Now for the rules:

  • No video games.
  • No Star Wars.
  • No bunnies or penguins.
  • No text.
  • No Kama Sutra.
  • Keep in mind our omnipresent rules about racism, religion (that means no religious figures or deities), and just playing nice in general. The ban hammer will be striking with swift and furious authority.

What about Caramel Sutra, the sensous combining of confectionaries into a orally explicit delight!

No Kama Sutra? Pooh. I was hoping for some penguin-on-bunny action.

This theme really has me stumped. Aside from the Taj mahal and other stereotypical ideas, I can't come up with a good angle.

Oh awesome. I'd love to do a drawing about the temple of Karni Mata, also known as the Rat Temple :D Heeee!

Here's the story about Karni Mata and the rats.

Hmmm... the whole "dot not feather" phrase might offend some. So I got nothing.

EDIT:
Except for this

Well, I was thinking of taking a break this week and this might do it for me. Unless something miraculously pops into my head.

Awesome, I was hoping I could reference Slum Dog Millionaire in my next design, and this is the perfect opportunity.

Really though, I can't think of anything.

How about the whole teenage sex-slave industry? I hear that's fairly popular over there.

I'd actually like to thank whoever wrote the description of this derby for the inspiration I needed after I saw the topic. ('Cause I really didn't want to draw a T-shirt of an overcrowded train car.)

That line there pretty much says stay away newbies. Good direction, but hard when you haven't mastered half-tones or are using an old school mouse.

After some discussion we've decided to say no specific religious deities. We don't allow images of Jesus, and the same rule will apply here. If your chipmunk has six arms and is in a vaguely deity like pose, that would be OK. The closer you get to showing an actual religious figure, the more likely you are to be rejected.

I'll offer this up because I'm not an artist, I'm a consumer of all of your fine art! In shirt form, anyway...

Siddhartha sitting under the bodhi OH GOD, THEY'RE WATCHING ME just before he attains enlightenment, just after, while it is happening...whatever! Wiki

How about Holi? Wiki

"Holi or Phagwah is a popular spring festival. Holi commemorates the slaying of the demoness Holika by Lord Vishnu's devotee Prahlad. Thus, the festival's name is derived from the Sanskrit words "Holika Dahanam", which literally mean "Holika's slaying""

How about Deepavali? Wiki

"Deepavali which means "row of lights/lamps" is called "Divali" in North India, Deepa means lamp and in Hindi a lamp is mostly called a Diya or Di. The festival is celebrated on the occasion of Lord Krishna and his wife Satyabhama killing a demon Narakasura. Another story says the festival is celebrated for the return of Rama and Sita to the kingdom Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile."

How about the prayer flags in the breeze?

I'm saving my lunch money for next weekend!

BTW...the word t-r-e-e seems to be a little tense over to the w00t offices today...One more gargleblaster they're watching me? The t-r-e-e-s are watching me? Hmmm...

Awesome! I love Bollywood, especially when everyone randomly breaks into dance. Here are some popular song/dance numbers from fairly recent movies for inspiration.

How about Siddhartha? He was a man who attained enlightenment and taught others to do the same.

Wiki

Like I said above...to aid the talented people...Siddhartha under the Bodhi t-r-e-e would be great!

Given we have a whole country to draw on this feels surprisingly hard.

I have a couple of ideas... maybe inspiration will strike while I'm eating my chicken korma.

Hmm.. (starts scrolling through 3 weeks worth of photos from a recent trip to India)... my question is, will Woot add any new shirt colors for this derby? Something in highlighter orange, perhaps? The over-the-top, technicolor vibrancy is one of the things that visually struck me most about the country.

Also, I think littleclyde's "Tyger Tyger" entry from the Fire derby would fit perfectly for this one, with a little modification.

Nice! Does fishbiscuit like Shahrukh Khan?;) (Then again, he is in a LOT of movies!)

I was in a bollywood inspired dance performance for an international festival in Australia when I was there a year for college... there is so much energy and excitement in the songs and dances - it was such an amazing experience. Soo much fun!

I'll be interested to see what people come up with on this one. I have to agree that this would be harder for newer submitters. I'm working on getting things set up so that I can try my hand at this, but I think that

I'll have to wait because this looks like it could be tricky to do without accidently offending people. (Not that one would want to be careless, obviously, but that I can see how without proper research a person could stumble into offensive territory.) Maybe that's just me though.

Regardless, cheers to you out there who participate. I can't wait to see it.

No, sorry. From wikipedia: "He is also regarded as a god or prophet in other world religions, including Hinduism, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and the Bahá'í faith."

We're not trying to frown upon you going in a religious direction as there is some great imagery to draw from. We are trying to keep specific religious figures out of it. So if you can do a generic person under a Bodhi tree you might not get rejected. If there are so many specifics in the image that it is obviously Siddhartha, then you most likely would.

If you're going to do the Logan's Run that is a religion based design be as vague as possible and be prepared that you may still be rejected.

I wish I saw this sooner. I was going to Gensha as a snake charmer, using his trunk as a flute. I was so proud of it too, and now I guess it is no good. POOOPY!

Personally, I'd much rather see designs from people who read up on a particular style of Indian art and try to create something using the techniques, rather than "I'll just draw this thing that everybody knows is in India."

Hmmmm.... It's hard to feel something upbeat about India when my job just got outsourced to there and now I'm not sure how I'm going to pay my mortgage next month. I s'pose that's not really India's fault, but.... I'm still feelin' kinda bitter.
