This theme really has me stumped. Aside from the Taj mahal and other stereotypical ideas, I can't come up with a good angle.

incredibly ornate and detailed Indian art, art full of "voluptuous feeling" and "sensuousness."

That line there pretty much says stay away newbies. Good direction, but hard when you haven't mastered half-tones or are using an old school mouse.

Given we have a whole country to draw on this feels surprisingly hard.

I have a couple of ideas... maybe inspiration will strike while I'm eating my chicken korma.

Hmm.. (starts scrolling through 3 weeks worth of photos from a recent trip to India)... my question is, will Woot add any new shirt colors for this derby? Something in highlighter orange, perhaps? The over-the-top, technicolor vibrancy is one of the things that visually struck me most about the country.

Also, I think littleclyde's "Tyger Tyger" entry from the Fire derby would fit perfectly for this one, with a little modification.

I was in a bollywood inspired dance performance for an international festival in Australia when I was there a year for college... there is so much energy and excitement in the songs and dances - it was such an amazing experience. Soo much fun!

I'll be interested to see what people come up with on this one. I have to agree that this would be harder for newer submitters. I'm working on getting things set up so that I can try my hand at this, but I think that

I'll have to wait because this looks like it could be tricky to do without accidently offending people. (Not that one would want to be careless, obviously, but that I can see how without proper research a person could stumble into offensive territory.) Maybe that's just me though.

Regardless, cheers to you out there who participate. I can't wait to see it.

I wish I saw this sooner. I was going to Gensha as a snake charmer, using his trunk as a flute. I was so proud of it too, and now I guess it is no good. POOOPY!

Personally, I'd much rather see designs from people who read up on a particular style of Indian art and try to create something using the techniques, rather than "I'll just draw this thing that everybody knows is in India."

Hmmmm.... It's hard to feel something upbeat about India when my job just got outsourced to there and now I'm not sure how I'm going to pay my mortgage next month. I s'pose that's not really India's fault, but.... I'm still feelin' kinda bitter.
