Here it is, our next Derby, because we're too geeked to keep it under wraps a minute longer: FUNimation Entertainment, the people behind the upcoming anime epic Evangelion 2.22: You Can (Not) Advance, are joining forces with Shirt.Woot in a mega-mech of anime t-shirt awesomeness. In honor of the release of the movie on DVD and Blu-ray, the theme for our next weekly t-shirt design competition, Derby #191, is Robots Save the World.

We'll officially kick things off on Friday, March 18 (check the schedule to your right for details) and unlike our usual Derby entries, these can include metallic ink. We'll still be offering our usual cash prize, but in addition our first place winner will land a home theatre system. All three winners will receive Evangelion 2.22 on DVD courtesy of FUNimation. The gang at FUNimation will also be picking their own favorite design to receive a mountain of anime goodies. Check out the rules, drool over the prizes, and start thinking up your best t-shirt designs involving robots saving the world while you watch the trailer below:

Derby Schedule

  1. 3/18 (Noon CST): Submissions and Voting Begins
  2. 3/23 (Noon CST): Submissions close
  3. 3/24 (Noon CST): Voting ends
  4. 3/25 (12am CST): 1st Place Sells
  5. 3/25 (Noon CST): FUNimation's Choice Announced

Watch the HD trailer and movie clips below.

Design Guidelines

Whether you're an old hand at submitting designs to Shirt.Woot or a newcomer hungry for your first win, you'll want to read the guidelines to make sure you've got all your bases covered. In addition the usual rules and regulations we've got some unique, special rules to consider:

  • Do not use any images, logos, or other assets associated with Evangelion. We're looking for "Robots Save the World" t-shirts, not Evangelion t-shirts.
  • You may use either gold (#b69624) or silver (#c5c7c9) metallic shimmer ink for your design - only one, not both. It will count toward your total 6 ink colors.
  • Halftones/gradients cannot use metallic ink.
  • The smallest line we can print using metallic ink is a 4 point line in Illustrator, or an 8 pixel line in Photoshop. (Those numbers are based on your artwork at full size.)
  • Incidental text allowed

And of course the usual rules still apply: your design can't exceed our 16" x 20" dimensions (download our official templates for a guide), use Pantone Solid Coated color swatches unless you want us guessing at converting your colors, you can use a maximum of 6 spot colors, Photoshop halftones must be 30 LPI or larger for a full-size design at 300 DPI, Illustrator designs should be submitted with gradients (leave the halftones to us) but each dot that makes up your halftone must be one solid color, and your Design Detail and Shirt Comp images must show any halftones you're using. Easy, right?

And just in case you needed any more motivation, here's what's on the line:

First Place: Home Theatre System
  • The usual $1000 plus a royalty for every shirt sold after launch day
  • Evangelion 2.22: You Can Not Advance on Blu-ray.
  • Westinghouse 42" 120Hz 1080p LED LCD HDTV
  • Memorex Blu-Ray Player w/ Wifi and BD Live 2.0
  • SDAT HTB1-S 5.1 Channel Home Theatre System
  • Memorex 6ft HDMI Cable
Second & Third Place
  • $1000 plus a royalty for every shirt sold after launch day
  • Evangelion 2.22: You Can Not Advance on Blu-ray.
FUNimation's Pick: An anime prize pack worth over $1000
  • Mushi-Shi anime Lithograph - Signed by Travis Willingham
  • Samurai 7 the Complete Series on Blu-ray
  • Soul Eater Part One Episodes 1 - 13 on DVD with Limited Edition Sticker Inside
  • Witchblade anime Lithograph - Signed by Jamie Marchi
  • Fullmetal Alchemist anime Lithograph - Signed by Travis Willingham, Vic Mignogna and Caitlin Glass
  • Much, much, much more (over 50 items in all)

new midgerock favorite for me!

And i think they would add all the rules. It be pretty evil of them not to state all the rules, so we don't end up working on a design for three days only to find out that it will be rejected....

This a chance to make good, wooters. Please don't shut robbie out of this robot derby (provided he submits something, which I truly, madly, deeply hope he does).

Here was my first idea. I know its rough, but do people kind of get what's going on here or at least the gist of it?

Sorry Chump, Patrick beat you to it:

The writeup makes it sound like they have to use metallic shimmer. They don't have to, correct?

I swear... No other show has ever made me want to ROOT for the creatures trying to wipe all life from the face of the planet. I didn't think it was possible for there to be an anime where I hated EVERY character. >:|

Sorry for the rant there...

(Seriously though, if you want good robot action check out Gurren Lagann, Macross Frontier, Rahxephon, Vision of Escaflone. Gigantic Formula was pretty decent, Sousei no Aquarion STARTED out pretty good... got wonky during the end)

Looking forward to your sub though Kasey.

I also expect RGlee to submit a couple good designs.

Wish I could enter, as a giant anime nerd I'd really like to win the prize pack. Blu-Rays, Lithos, all that...

(Just got an idea... PM if you'd like to colab anyone)

Munchy Attack If you can find the name of this artist & real song title I'll buy you a daily woot shirt (your choice what day)

Dystopia Dark Lager, Where the Wild Parties at?, B.A. Bearacus, and many more wanted in XXL(PLEASE!!!)
Edgar Allen Poe shall remained headlock'd until Nevermore is reckoned.

ooooo, I wasn't expecting this till later! I could definitely use a memorex 6' hdmi cable, so I'll be going for first place here. Good thing I'm amazing at drawing robots. wait, no, I'm not amazing at drawing robots. Hmmm, might just have to buy that cable myself.

What a cool challenge! The lead time is a great bonus, although in a way it makes it harder to pick an idea to go with. Especially as there are no restrictions. Usually the tight deadline forces your choice in the first couple of hours.

Hmm!

Yeah, what is the point of the sponser picking their favorite if it doesn't print? All the loot sounds nice, but I'm sure most artists would trade it for having their design printed even if it didn't sell very well.

It is a special event, maybe Woot prints the Funimation print on Monday like an EC or something.

Wow, really excited about this one! Here's my initial sketch, but I really want the woot community's take on it:

In case it doesn't read so well in the sketch, the robot is holding Japan out of reach of the lizard-monster. I mean this as an allegory for the awesomeness of Japanese people and their technology and spirit in overcoming natural disaster, but I know that what I intend and what is received is different. Shirt Wooters, is this a questionable image? Do you think anyone would take offense? This would be the last thing I'd want!

FUNimation's pick gets the prize pack of anime goodies but there are no plans for it to be printed.

Incidental text only (so no slogans, wordy text bubbles, etc.) We'll be adding that to the rules today. However there are no other restrictions for this derby.

Ok, have my old colab partner working on one of my idea.

Have one other idea I just drew up. Looking for a proper draw-er of things. :D

Seriously... I curse my inability to draw.

Kevlar is right, Patrickspens has already printed a similar design. However, I think yours is different enough (with the animals around) to be okay, especially if you switch the plant in the hands to something else. Baby bird, perhaps.

That said, I LOVE your design so far - totally something I would wear.

While personally, I think it is a fine idea, I imagine people could think you are including Japan to generate "solidarity votes".

Nothing follows.

althought the majority of voters may or may not be offended I think approaching whats going on Japan in this fashion may not be the best choice. What they are going through appears to be much graver than how you are approaching it. My advice would be possibly go with a more serious approach. How that looks I can't recommentd but that's my persective in the matter because I have seen some other designs using Godzilla which didn't seem right to me, "right" in an awkward kind of way not moral or objective.

I think we're going to see what you touched on here throughout this derby, seeing as how giant planet-saving robots are very synonymous with Japan. It's just unfortunate timing that this derby is coinciding with such a huge disaster there, and I'd bet a lot of entries are going to hit on the notes of large scale damage of cities, just by the nature of the design theme. Hell, I've got an idea that doesn't specifically reference Japan at all but might seem crass given what's happened.

It is similar to Patrick's in the sense that they both have a robot and a plant, but the concept, character, and plant are completely different.

I really want to keep the plant in there because the idea behind this is all about restoration. Not only does this hero save the world from complete destruction, but this hero also take the time to ensure that life is sustainable thereafter. Planting the plant is a great way to symbolize that.

I think since we have the extra time, I will create your baby bird as back-up incase it gets rejected. I think its a good alternative, but it won't make the original concept as solid in my opinion.
