Speaking as a biologist: We don't generally do math with DNA as pictured here* and it has little (nothing? I don't specialize in genetics) to do with fractals.


* Not math that's common knowledge, anyway, other than genotypes and probability (Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, crosses...). You could argue for significant differences between sequences or quantitative genetics or something, but that doesn't come to mind from this.

Thanks, for the most part :P I spent several hours writing and planning this out- it took four or five attempts to get the length to work out perfectly with the shape of the cat, and then another time to rewrite it in nicer handwriting.

I think I'd like it better WITH the text, to be honest. I 'get' it without it, but the text makes it funnier. Plus, I have a couple friends I'd buy it for if it had the text because it's a perfect play on their roller derby names, but it would make no sense for them to wear it without the text.

I agree. Sticking with the snowflake theme would have been cool, or, alternatively, a coniferous fractal tree would have meshed well for the holiday season.

While DNA could be the "in nature" the rules refer to, I don't see how slapping a fractal on the design makes it "Math in Nature." DNA has absolutely nothing to do with fractals. You might as well just have a turbunguin with a 1+1=2 in small print at the bottom.

"E pluribus unum" is Latin; it means "From many, one". This week's submission expresses the concept of a dollar "$1" made from all of its 100 parts, the same way a fractal expresses itself. There are many styles of pennies illustrated. Six colors on an asphalt gray shirt.

Nice concept, sloppy execution. The math is rather messy here, it kind of makes sense but not if you really think about it. X has a definite value(crow) and the sum of one crow squared(one crow) is a murder?

Something simpler maybe,

(n>/=3)_SIGMA^n(crow_n)= murder
