I don't hear davenport used to describe a sofa, but Lindsay Davenport was (still is?) a top-ranked tennis player.

"She has a reputation amongst the tennis press, and thus much of the tennis-watching public, of being thoughtful, polite, and balanced, unlike some of her contemporaries."

don't you mean "drawing room" ahahaha?!?!

I'd better not get involved here as a Brit...cuz we use words that none of you would know anyway, sooooo it'd be a hard thing to determine which words were obsolete or, should I say: never used anymore when they're not used over here anyway. Pfft! Just my 2 pennies' worth... ;-P

Hmm... never heard of "withdrawing room."

(Knows better than to doubt Josephus. Curiosity piqued, looks up "withdrawing room" and "drawing room.")

"In British society, a drawing room is a room in a house where visitors may be entertained. The name is derived from withdrawing room. In a large sixteenth, seventeenth or early eighteenth century English house, a withdrawing room was a room to which the owner of the house, his wife, or a distinguished guest who was occupying one of the main apartments in the house could "withdraw" for more privacy. It was often off the great chamber (or the great chamber's descendent the saloon) and usually led to a bedroom."

No, tell us! Do you know how many years we heard those Beetle songs and didn't know what the words meant when we were kids? It must have been 15 years latter that I found out what a Mac was! It isn't as bad now, with BBC shows and the world being so much smaller, but I'm sure we all still want the British words! Got any slang or curses? (curses that woot would let us use)

My grandmother used to say (forgive my spelling) "Yazzus Muddia"...it was kinda like "For Heaven Sake" or could be a swear word in a different language for all I know.

Like "cellar" & "scurvy" are more outdated than "swain?" I don't think so...
