Pons in the brain is cutting of sensory/motor commands to and from the body (so you don't move in your dreams and you can sleep soundly even if there's stuff happening around you). Therefore you can't feel the bed.

But at the same time the vestibular (balance) system is saying you're flat on your back (or side, or belly). So lying flat + no feeling of your body = flying/falling. Kid just woke up, thought was falling, and tried to "catch" herself. The fear of falling prolly caused the crying. But nothing serious- just a natural response while sleeping.

Morning All!

Skek beat me to the explanation! He probably did a better job than I could too.

Ver1 did this a few times for a couple nights and then stopped. She was a side sleeper though (in 2004 that was considered as safe, but now they say no). When we put her in the bassinet, we put her on her side and put a rolled up receiving blanket behind her back. We tried switching to her back, but she would not sleep that way and since she rolled over at 6 weeks (both my kids did, crazy things), she would just go back on her side anyway.

My guess would be that it's a development she is going through that is making her more prone to the reaction. If she is back sleeping make sure she is flat, make sure you aren't using any kind of sleep-positioners or infant pillows and that the mattress you are using is firm and does not have any kind of impressions or holes. It may help for a short time to let her sleep in an incline like a car seat or a baby seat.

When she is awake make sure she is fully supported. The head tipping back is most often the cause of the reaction, but it can also be from any unsupported sensation. If it always happens in the same device, stop using that device until she is older. She isn't feeling comfortable (especially if she is awake when it happens).

As always call your pedi or the baby help line (our hospital has one that is free). If your baby has been testing fine for weight gain and reactions and everything many times they are fine with your trying an alternative to flat sleeping for a short while.

-- to answer another questions babies can have sleep apnea, but usually you can hear respiration issues as well.

Now if any of the glorified Moms or Dads can help me help my 2 year old to learn when she has to poo so we can get it in the toilet instead of her underwear i will bow down and worship at your exalted feet!

yay! Tire guy just called, new tire is in. Orc is going to head over after lunch, shouldn't take long, told us last night he would get to jump the line.

Not in our area- too hilly. But we had some good screaming T-storms though. Kids love them- they stand next to the window and scream at each lightning strike. Then we count to the thunder. Very fun.
