Stercrazy wrote:As a professional artist, I find this quote both naive and offensive. Doing art in a style that your audience wants is not using questionable tactics. It's fairly common and even expected and encouraged to tailor your resume and portfolio to clients that you are trying to get a job from. I haven't seen any evidence of anyone "manipulating the market". They put up pieces they think people will like, and they either do well or they don't. If they do well, then obviously they did it right.

It's stupid to blame your customers for not liking what you do. If I had a car dealership that only sold yellow Volvos, I wouldn't get to sit there and say that people are stupid for not buying my yellow Volvos. If somebody comes onto the lot wanting a blue civic, it would be a waste of both of our time to berate them for their foolishness and to extol the virtues of yellow Volvos.

This notion of "artistic integrity" is all well and good until you get out in the real world. People like what they like. You may consider this pandering, but I know for a fact that it originated as parody. The fact that it is standing on its own merits shows that OBVIOUSLY somebody must be digging it.

As for doing "anything you could to make sure that sort of work never succeeded again"... unless you plan on insulting and driving away EVERYONE who either does the stuff you dislike or votes for the stuff you dislike, the current status quo is going to remain. My suggestion is lighten up and get over it. Attacking people for doing artwork in a particular style is counter-productive.

I'm not an artist, but +1!!!

I can't just apply for jobs with a standard resume. I have to tailor it for the job I'm applying for. End of story. That's how it works.

Re: but srsly it's mai pumpkin

Frankly, I think the design is totally cute. I hate cute. I like the style to it for the most part, but there's no way I'd wear it; I'm not a member of AARP. I did see that it was posted on the heels of the rejection of the first though, and I have no fear that it will be rejected for the same reasons as the previous.

Though the artistic debate will continue: do I make designs for the masses in order to make money? Or do I do designs that are 'high art' and starve to death? Somewhere there's a happy medium there; at least that's what I tell myself (and some of the other high voted designs here in this derby and past ones seem to find that). It sounds like this artist has figured out what the general, unwashed masses want, and are producing it. You can be all high and mighty about the lowness of it all, but it seems the numbers speak for themselves.

While I thought I did enough to make the character different, I understand woot's standpoint with the rejection, and it is what it is.

Thanks again for all the continued support guys.

Yeah, I have to agree......I just happened to see this image from that movie today, and immediately was reminded of your first submission.

Here's a couple more of that same character:

That being said, I really did like it. I like the new one as well (LOVE the bat balloon!) and GMV.

export your design as a jpg at 580x580 pixels for the shirt image, and at 240x240 pixels for the detail image. Don't allow any compression at all; save at the highest possible quality, is what I mean there. that should do it.

I love this(though I also think it would've done well even bigger on the shirt)! Retro is one of my favorite styles and you did such an awesome job with it. Plus, I have a big soft spot for owls.

I hope to see more from you in the future!

koopadaisy wrote:So in other words you can't even name three artists among the "many" that left due to Adder? Let alone even just one?

Can. Choose not to.

If folks can't see how his brand of 100+ derbies of negativity would not only scare off some of his targets, but many new artists, then I am not going to convince them otherwise by digging myself through old derbies to find the single posts by artists on their entries stating they would not be returning.

If you would like to ignore this due to lack of "evidence", then go for it. I think his brand of spewing hatred every single derby stands for itself as an echo of how this community scares off new artists trying to dip their toe in the public waters.

snarkygal wrote:BECAUSE WOOT SHOULD HAVE REJECTED THE TIGER! YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT ENTIRELY!!!!!

I didn't miss that point. I understand that everyone's frustrated because the best art doesn't necessarily get the most votes and because Woot's criteria for rejection appears sometimes to vary from entry to entry. I am frustrated too, believe me. But this entry isn't getting Seki any closer to rejection and it's not giving anymore votes or attention to designs that SHOULD be in the fog instead. As far as proving a point, the only thing that this is proving to me is that Woot voters will vote for a shirt regardless of originality, artistic skills* or a logical connection to the theme...which has already been shown by the original tiger in a pumpkin (in my opinion). All, that's happened is that there is yet one more shirt getting a lot of votes that I would never buy or wear and that I believe should also be rejected. I know that a lot of people got a laugh from this, but over 200 votes out of spite for another design? As I said, I'm just disappointed.

*Clarification: I'm not saying Josephus doesn't have artistic skill because these Cheetahs are fairly well executed. I just don't think that's why this shirt has been getting votes.
