Holy cow, too much studio ghibli for one person to take. I'm going to have to break my Anti-Anvil rule for this design. The print is too amazing for me to pass up.

The write up is my favorite!

If you don't know these movies, go watch them now:

"Scarecrow" - Howl's Moving Castle
"Tin Man" - Laputa: Castle in the Sky
"Dorothy" - Princess Mononoke
"Toto" - Howl's Moving Castle
"Lion" - My Neighbour Totoro

Brilliant.

Is it just me, or is the tin man doing the Michael Jackson crotch grab?

Maybe it's just me.

@CowboyDann is buying Anvil? That is Holy Cow!

I've Played the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz. I'm not exactly sure what the shirt is getting at. Though i like any shirt that has me featured...

189 Bottles of wine from Woot so far!
$3319.36or a mere $17.56 per bottle.

I think Chihiro from Spirited Away would have been a better pick for Dorothy and one of the wolves from Princess Mononoke as Toto.

I'm guessing they're off to see the Wizard Howl? Nice blend of references.

As I sit here, I find it nearly impossible not to be charmed by how well the references to the studio Ghibli films works with each character chosen.

I probably shouldn't do this to my bank account, but in for one.

I wonder
how Studio Ghibli feels about this shirt design?

I'm a huge Studio Ghibli fan but San as Dorothy just doesn't work for me. I'd suggest Haru from The Cat Returns for Dorothy and a baby Ohm from Nausicaa for Toto to spread some representation of the movies around. But really there's a lot of different ways this could go. Overall a good mash up though, nice idea.

Totally coincidental but I'm wearing my Totoro face t-shirt at this moment. Yes, I know. A non-Woot shirt. I'm sorry.

I totally agree that Chohiro would be a better Dorothy...but it's a toss up between Heen and the Wolves for Toto...I love Moro and her sons...but Heen really fits the spot...

I think San as Dorothy is the biggest killer for me. I think Heen is great as Toto but would just like to see more movies represented.

Love this. Now to keep anyone in my family from seeing it so I am not out $50 on shirts ;)

Also... is Kiki the wicked witch or the good witch?

Orcrist42

quality posts: 7 Private Messages Orcrist42

To join the debate... I am not sure if San was the best pick for Dorothy either, but she works okay. It won't stop me from buying the shirt. I think the colors could have been a bit brighter, but the artwork is great so again, not a huge deal.

Any of the Miyazaki heroines could have filled the role probably. I think Sheeta or Nausicaa would both work, but really San was on a mission to kill (as was Dorothy), so it works.

Insta-buy.

I love how the art style on the shirt is very true to Miyazaki's/Ghibli's.

I'd have probably used Kiki for Dorothy, but I suppose the fact that she's a witch woulda gotten in the way of the theme. The little girl from Whisper of the Heart would have worked great as well, but she's not as well known of a reference.

I dunno, I kinda like seeing San in the slippers. She looks so happy. But I agree it would have been a little more interesting if other films were represented here. Having two characters representing same film when there are literally dozens of films to choose from seems a little silly. Regardless, it's still a fabulous design and if I had any money left after paying my bills I would definitely be buying one.

Nausicaa was NOT a studio Ghibli work. While it IS a Miyazaki creation, it actually pre-dated the founding of Ghibli by about a year. It's often included in Ghibli collection because most of the people who worked on that film went on to Ghibli.

That said, I'm saddened that Spirited Away was not included. But oh well. Still a great shirt. I bought one for my daughter since... well... I don't think I can pull this off myself. ;-)
