Can someone tell me the rule about using our designs after the derby and voting ends? Are we restricted from using them to have our own tees printed in time for halloween?

Yep... woot holds the rights for 60 days from the end of the derby. I suppose you could write to derby@woot and ask for permission... not sure if they've ever given it.

Oh no it was late to update! Why... why did you leave me?

Oh, and those of you defending my imaginary/fantasy/candy corn with faces design for not being factually sound. Thanks

You're welcome. The ways of candy corn people may be strange and unknown, but they don't have to stay that way.
It's just that we have a little problem with cultural ignorance in this world. Sometimes I think even just one more ethnocentric wooter will tip the boat into a bubbling sea of prejudice. That is why we must pile our pirates and zombies and candy corn people alike onto the other side of the boat to even out the weight and keep the ship afloat, sailing toward the seas of justice and freedom.

Yes, good point. The Puffaluffs are another misunderstood group of (people? luffs? puffs? cotton balls?)

I thought I'd seen that before, but I wondered if this would be true for a holiday-inspired design as well. They won't likely print any of these designs again in the next 60 days, no?

Crazy that "All your Treats..." got the boot so late in the game. That really suprised me.

On another note, after reading through the discussion on Pantone vs. hex vs. cmyk, vs. etc... I thought I'd mention a Pantone swatch book. Because of the nature of digital design, even the most calibrated monitors can't simlulate final print colors with total accuracy... let alone the factory 65k, max brightness settings that come with most PC's. To help with this, Pantone prints books every year containing the closest representations of their colors when printed. The sole purpose of these books is to know what your going to get... so when you select your 6 color palette, you could refer to the book to make sure it's the right tint, hue, etc. and if not, pick what you thought it should've been on screen.

The only problem is that these book are frickin expensive! Here's a link just incase there are any money bags out there that want totally accurate color on their shirts.

I've written a nice letter, but got no reply - I guess my brown zune purchase has filled up their "to-do" list.

I do find it weird that they hold the design for 60 days even if you don't win. I mean, do they ever purchase designs that are highly ranked but don't win? I'm at 11 right now, but to get into the top few I'd need a woot miracle. In any case, I'm ready to get the Trooper out there as soon as Woot (or 60 days) gives me the go ahead.

So, I would love to sell them on my own, but can't withdraw the design. Normally, I wouldn't mind but the design is pretty specific for halloween (I guess you COULD wear it through Thanksgiving).

To the people who really like my design - Thanks. I've been doing shirts a while for fun, and graphics work in general for many years, but I've never entered a shirt competition before.

Looks great dude. Let me know if I can lend a hand. Not much of an ASP programmer but I'd be happy to help any way I can. I'm a firm believer in open source, some of the best community projects are ones where we all work together to make it better.

Glad you got a domain, definitely makes it easier.

That said, I am now actively soliciting pity votes for my other entry:

Mind if I ask why you changed the placement on the angst-o-lantern from the original you had posted on your portfolio ? I liked it better lower and near the side. Just popped my woot cherry. Added my first design, a bit late and the layer thing was harder than I expected. I ended up doing it in Paint SHop Pro and then converting it to pdf but it looks like it lost the layers. Is there a good tutorial for my future entries?

I dont understand your design...and maybe Im overthinking it.... but its almost identical in form to your entry last week....and if I recall, last week's didn't do so hot. (who am I to talk???? I know I know I know)

I would have voted for it but the string of moons and starts across the bottom seems forced. I dont know if you were trying to complete a circle, or spell out some kind of underworld theme or what..... It reminds me of a necklace that a 12 year old girl might buy...and im not a 12 year old girl.

You had me at tree - you lost me at star string. Next week would you mind submitting one without the string across the bottom. Chances are I'd be all about that. ALso, if you would like to explain your thought process, I would love to hear al about it. Thanks and good luck to you.

Thanks

Shirt.woot shirts tend to be really long. For shorter guys, and most girls, this has meant that lower designs end up naturally scrunching the graphic. I put the first placement out into the forums and got a couple of negative placement responses, so I made the executive decision to move it.

Truth be told, i liked it at the bottom better as well :-)

Trick or Treat by NhojTheGreat: I voted for this. For me, that’s a big deal; it’s the same as me actually saying “if I saw this at a store for ten dollars I would buy this”. I’d especially prefer it at a store because then I’d probably have it to wear for Halloween (damn you, woot). I don’t know what draws me to this so much. It seems simple, clean, with a great and subtle concept. Other recent entries by NhojTheGreat do not even compare (and most are more graphic-image-work than this). I hope he/she decides to stick with this style.
Verdict: It only needs like 300 votes. I still got a shot, right?

Til next time Woundup fans. Same Woundup place, same woundup time!

Thanks for the recognition. I was begining to wonder if it was my designs or my stratagies keeping me from getting votes.
One more push. Only 300 more votes!

Well... last week's was top 20, and I had requests to revamp for the Halloween theme so I posted again this week It was also intentionally late so that no one could accuse me of having the "sleeping thing under tree" following giving me a fluke fog on the first day. Either way... top 20, top 10... I'm pleased with and grateful for both of those. There are many, many well deserving designs that don't make the top 20, let alone the top 10.

Personally, I like the strings. They're kind of whimsical. Last week I was trying to marry dark with cute, and I still like them, so they stayed this week. I just noticed the necklace pattern today actually. The original thought pattern behind it had to do something with floating asteroids and Little Prince-esque design.
- that and I didn't like a slightly more than half circle sitting by itself. It felt too top-heavy.

If next week's derby is "Monster Child Sleeping Under Tree" week, I'll be sure to post it again with and without strings.

Thanks for the critique.

No kidding! I just received my first woot shirt today and I couldn't believe how long it was. I'm a 6ft tall female and the tee looked long on me. I can definitely see how some of the designs that run along the bottom border may suffer from 'scrunching'. It's probably smart to keep that in mind for future designs.
