Even though it may not be hand drawn, it takes just as much time, effort and skill to compose the elements in a conceptual way while still keeping things visually appealing and within the style. Obviously, it isn't an easy style to work with otherwise there would be tons of abstract designs exactly like this presented each week. In recent derbies more and more of this style are being introduced but the lack of popularity in those shirts (no offense to other designers) shows that Alvin's effort and skill are being recognized and appreciated by the voting community. Hate it or love it but don't fight.
No. I does NOT take just as much time and effort. Take a good, hard look at the images used. There are five of them. Do you really, honestly think that someone could draw, shade, and clean up all five in the same amount of time it takes for someone to find an image online and paste it in photoshop? Sure, after one pastes it in photoshop, they have to move the layers around to get the images to relate to one another in an aesthetically pleasing way. There's no way that a photoshop chop like this could ever take as much time as drawing those 5 original pieces. Some people have the composition skills of a monkey. That's why all of the "abstract" submissions aren't doing as well as this. Alvin has a good eye for composition, but it doesn't take as much time and effort as original art.
