Have you seen some of those photochop entries? So many of them are wicked awesome. I believe those guys do it for fun, and the money prize is just a fun bonus. I even thing some people try to get "the monkey prize" on purpose.

Money makes people crazy. The difference between $100/$50/$20 and $500+$2/shirt after the first day is like the slot machine wheels of money flashing in your eyes. Maybe it's just me seeing this through my "I got a day job to pay the bills" mindset, but I really don't think woot shirts can really be anyone's primary source of income.

It didn't even dawn on me that people would do it exclusively for the big bucks...that does seem like a risky way to bring in a regular check--even if you're freelancing with multiple sites/clients.

I've never submitted anything, so I don't really feel qualified to comment on anything in that forum. It just surprises me how worked up folks get. But the money thing explains it.

Today's pants smell like:
Not sure if you should post that? This slightly-nsfw-flowchart will help.

True. I think it's a double-edged sword... people who can't crack the fog who are not designers get discouraged. And designers that work really hard are losing out to amateurs for little payout, which makes them discouraged. I think Woot should stay as the chosen t-shirt design contest for the up-and-coming artist (and artists in training). Leave the professional ultra-detailed stuff to Designed by Humans and Threadless and other sites.

I suppose people that make a living off of designing (not just woot shirts) might need that money - but you're right, it does make people crazy.

The money is good if you're lucky to get it on shirt.woot, but it can't be dependable unless you're REALLY good. But I can't tell you how much time people probably put into entries that don't get even 20 votes... it's the lure of the cash, which is pretty big.

If my "coffee stain pucker of doom" had been printed, with a $500 prize, dividing that by the time I have put in for all of my entries thus far, works out to less than $2.00 per hour.

Clearly, there are other reasons why people (okay, I) enter the derby.

Yes, but then I'd know exactly how many really sold, and I'd bet it'd be a lot fewer than 330... I prefer to not know and believe it would have been great.

I know I have submitted stuff that didn't get 20 votes and it wasn't for the money. But, there are people out there who might have good designs that they simply wouldn't submit to a site that sells $10 shirts if there wasn't some financial gain.

They wanted one right away, so I slapped something hastily together. I'm still trying to get the Feb30th thing through- it keeps getting rejected, and I'm running out of time!

I envision the logo will have a real amakihi in it:

Spreadshirt is pretty easy to set up... if I get it up and running, I'd be willing to host other people's designs there as well. If their accounting is halfway organized, it would be easy to paypal individual designers what they earn. But if you do, make sure you read the rules for vector art CAREFULLY. They're very strict, and of the 5 designs I have submitted, only two have been accepted. The prices there are pretty good, considering the level of detail they offer, even with a $2 commission for moi.

BTW- I talked to several people and they said that algae in a goldfish tank is unsightly, but a good sign that the fish are healthy and in a good tank. I'm still gonna do water changes to get the ick out though.

I've got fish and aquatic turtles (and dogs) and I've been told that you shouldn't change more than 20% of the water at one time because you don't want to remove the beneficial bacteria either, not to mention that temperature shock from complete water changes can kill the fish. Are you a new fish owner?

What is going on? The tank has gotten cloudy.

I just bought a new tiny all in one tank. I get to put the catfish back in it tonight.
Maybe I'll get a betta.

I usually use a water purifier here at work to do water changes. Unbenownst to me, it has contracted a case of algaeitis. So when I took the mostly pure water with a bit of algae in it and dumped it in a fertile, non-purified atmosphere of fish, the algae went ape and turned my water green. My webcam ain't the best, so it looks cloudy. But it is most definitely green. So now I'm water changing using treated tap until they can fix the purifier. Eventually I may have to do a whole-tank water change if it doesn't calm down (fish go out, water completely removed and filter changed, water back in, fish back in).

I just did that a few weeks ago. It got worse. Bought a new filter. Filter is making noise, gotta bring it back.
Bought a tiny new tank , three gal, it was scratched. Exchanged it yesterday and set it up.
My sole surviving fish goes in tonight. One new fish, most likely a beta, will be bought tomorrow.

All this because the kids won goldfish in 1993 or so. Had to set up a real tank with a filter. Got a catfish. The goldfish lasted 10 years. The catfish refused to die, so I got guppies.
The guppies reproduced to the point that there was a overpopulation explosion which led to the expected die off.
Except for the catfish.
Thought about giving up and flushing the catfish....no, he would haunt me.
Which led to the buying of a whole new system.

But.... after the next big spruce up of the house, with new rugs, I will set up a real 20 gallon long or 30 gallon tank. I bought a nonreturnable tank stand already.

Sounds crazy. My turtles grow a nice coat of algae on their backs so no matter what I do it is everywhere. They can handle the total water changes pretty well though.

The fish have been losing their little gold minds. Water changes stir up a lot of stuff, and they've been having a field day scooping it all up. The little freaks.

you should get a couple of those catfish they call 'algae eaters'.
maybe turn the lights down. also, there's some kind of copper solution that doesn't affect animals that will kill the algae dead, dead, dead. My dad puts it in his 1/4 acre pond, works great.

I got the lights set to daytime hours, so I got it as brief as possible without covering the entire tank with foil (what another faculty occasionally does.

I'll investigate the algacide solution...

I have a 55 gallon. It resides at my stepmom's house right now. At one point it had four plecostemos (algae eaters), three were the length of my forearm. We used to have to feed them algae flakes because there wasn't enough in there to feed them naturally. ^_^

EDIT: Wait, how did algae problems lead in to a question about where I am?
