ianthemighty wrote:Very nicely done. You've got my vote, but I'm also more okay than most with wearing a well-done shirt that makes me look foolish. Adder might be right in that some kids would be afraid to wear it.

Think about the average wooter: I mean, what kind of person hovers over his computer every night at midnight just to see what new schlock he can buy? What motivates this person? Obviously, he's desperate for a spark of humanity in the dark caverns of the Internet. Obviously, he wants a shirt that makes him feel like a member of a club. I could see people shying away from your shirt because it'd be too ambiguous to the people who'd see them wear it. "Is that guy cool...? I can't tell."

And now I've joined the advisory board you didn't ask for.

My first preference is a lot of votes. But a close number two would be some well thought out posts that serve as a kind of broad commentary on wootshirt art vs. design and wearability vs. visual stimulation (not that any of those are mutually exclusive, of course!) Regardless, thanks for some attention- I'm already looking forward to the next derby. (Plus I'm in a good mood because UNC just beat Dook in college hoops!) Thanks, folks.

Love this design, and the song it is modeled after. No offense, but when I saw the banner piece below Rocky, I thought, "Is this a Jimiyo design?" HA! I should've known it was a JamesCho!

You sang that in nursing homes????? The old people must have wanted to kill you!

I remember singing it to my grandparents when I first learned it. It just goes on and on and on, with all the annoying inflections in the voice on some words. Great song to sing, but I wouldn't want to have to listen to it.

btw, I'm smilingjack too. I'm not hiding, I was just voting

Dang...I just realized, though...the 8's will probably count as text and get rejected.

You think so? That would seem a little harsh to me. It's use is more of a graphical one in that it's a symbol to better recognize the object. "Text" to me consists of labels, captions, and signs. However, we will see.

Keep in mind that the design can only be a limited area, so the underarm hair will not be by the underarms. You might also want to reconsider the leg lines (for lack of a better description) to be sure this is considered PG-13.

Ummm... they're not "leg lines". it's just the lower transverse abdominal.

Re: Inspired by Good Vibrations

AdderXYU made one excellent point about this design, that it had too much of the wave in front as a wide open expanse, so I remade the design with an additional sound wave there. In addition, I gave it a bit more of the 60s feel by adding a couple of those flowers that were everywhere back then on the back speaker. I already tried for some of that feel with the peace sign sticker on the front speaker. I made the speaker fronts black too, to give it a bit more of the feel of the times. I am well aware that the song isn't about surfing, but the Beach Boys certainly were, and the sound of the song really evokes the surf sound they did so well.

If you have the second generation cool breeze shirt (the one woot sent out after the very first batch)
try a quick bleach. Any bleaching at all brings out the black.
The original shirt from the first night can be bleached, but is muted. The replacement shirt stayed brighter.

If this wins, I'll buy it. Most likely more than one. I hope it shows up. It really doesn't look like it will. The brown shirt is very dark.

I love FOTC, but would agree that the addition of a rhymnoceros would make this shirt a real contender. I'd definitely buy it if there was a rhymnoceros, but as it stands it looks a little too much like a hungry hippo listening to his stereo. I think the FOTC reference is lost.

Cho, this design is awesome. I instantly knew it was yours. But why did you make the dark ink color the color of the shirt? That *is* the color of the brown shirts...so dark.

brizz wrote:i'm confused. so the last derby is evidence that voters DO recognize the best designs? So this one can't win because it's not one or the best?

I think you might overestimate this just a tad. It's good, but you can't say the designs in the fog aren't also fantastic shirts. there's a lot of really good ones this derby, and if this doesn't win, i'm sure we'll see plenty of beefcoat entries that do compete for printing in the future. He's got some talent!

The derbies are evidence that they DO NOT recognize the best designs. I mis-typed (it was really late). Apologies! Ya, I was totally using hyperbole there... but I would love to see this design win.

Please, if you are going to include music notation in designs, at least have some sense of what you are doing.

I agree. It's the right music, but it's all mixed up in the design. Obviously made by a non-musician. It's a fantastic idea, but I think I'd actually be embarrassed to wear this.

AdderXYU wrote:See, when people ask me to explain my shirt, I normally make shillelagh up, because explaining your shirt is foolish. I vote aesthetically, and so long as it makes sense to me thusly, I don't care who else asks "duh, what?"

Also, it's fun to guess because we know this is a music theme. In 4 months, when you're walking around non-wooters in your lemon shirt, you will have more impact with a vaguer shirt that can be interpreted more widely than you will with something which spells things out for you.

But that's hopefully the last I'll say on the subject. Wooters love things being spelled out for them, so I guess I'm not surprised

Ok I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I personally like it when people look at a shirt and say something like, "Devil went down to Georgia, great song". I don't necessarily think you'll get that response with this. At best, you may get "is that a devil went down to Georgia shirt?". Georgia makes it less ambiguous. With the lime in the coconut shirt, I think that everyone will get it and think it is great without explanation. I think that is the point of this derby and a shirt that clearly spells out devil went down to georgia accomplishes this goal better. However, everybody has their own taste and some people like wierder, more abstract shirts. To each his own.

It really bums me out that people are referring to one of the greatest movies of all time and a shirt that is so simple and cute. I've seen resevoir dogs several hundred times, probably, and a simple, cute design like this would never make me think of the movie, regardless of the fact that the song is played over the credits. Give me "Stuck in the Middle with You", and I'll think resevoir dogs. Sorry, but cute things don't make me think of a movie where someone's ear gets cut off. [/rant]

Please note that this post was to express my opinion and not based on some ill-conceived notion that my opinion will change the voter's minds (which seems to be what everyone thinks all posts are intended for.)

The song is Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Smashing Pumpkins.

You may want to read over the derby submission rules though because this has a few issues with it about printability. Because woot cannot print gradients photos are not allowed.

What a terrible waste would this be if it didn't even show up on the shirt right? I don't think by adding this highlight throws anything on the design off - I'm pretty sure it'll look badass when it's printed. If it does anyway. Thanks for the votes and caring about Ol Rocky.
