This is really interesting... did you use Adobe Illustrator and create a custom "leaf brush" for yourself? I don't have a copy of Illustrator at the moment, so I had to do all my leaf placing by hand in Photoshop... it would've saved me a hour of work or more if I had Illustrator.

Ditto- I think that's even the norm for me lately. This is the first week in a long time where I've done anything purely vector-based... and personally, I tend to like the detail of hand-drawn stuff better than the precision of vectors.

The derby has a way of rewarding ideas just as often as it rewards execution, so I think even first-timers have a great shot at a win. Take a chance and give it a try, people.

Not much a fan of the color scheme. I understand the leaf being sunset colors (although I can't imagine why you would want to make the water brown). The blue certainly doesn't sit well with me.
Also, are the geese flying North intentionally?

I would like this better if the borders actually matched. The eastern part of Canada is further east than the eastern most point of the US, but that doesn't show up on this shirt. That's because the picture of Canada is on a smaller scale than that used in the picture of the US.

I couldn't wear this, because I work with people who would point out this inconsistancy to me - with glee (they're Canadians) - non-stop.

I actually tried it with a blue base first, but the large leaf didn't look like it was a single unit like that. So I decided to go with brown instead... it now looks more like sunset on the land than over the water, I'll admit. You can stand on the Western shore of Lake Ontario and see the sunset over the land. :-)

As for the direction of the birds, I'll plead creative license on that one. It looks better, in my eyes... more "forward moving." If we, as a culture read from right-to-left, I'm sure it would be the other way around.

Feel free to interpret the shirt however you like, though. If it's a sunrise over Toronto for you then that's what you can imagine it as. :-)

I hope the designer shows up to explain what this is about.

Since there are Cyrillic letters used, it looks like this is a statement about some policies in Canada that could be considered socialist - or communist. It's a shame that the backwards N was used, since it is the Long E sound in Russian, Bulgarian, etc.

But since there is an ISTAN at the end of Canada - and the year 2012 - it looks like the designer could be implying that Canada will be under Muslim rule by 2012.

Either interpretation is not likely to bring in the votes, but anything is possible. Hazel, please come explain!!!!

I don't get the moderation...but the point is, this particular collaboration isn't flying up my flagpole for a couple reasons: Fonzie is just scary and I have moose locally who are also rather larger than my rather large equine. The combo scares me.

Something like that, but all PhotoShop. Select something, choose Edit/Define Brush Pattern.... Under Window/Brushes you can then set up Shape Dynamics (among other things) to vary size and orientation as you work with a tablet. Having picked up a tablet almost 3 weeks ago now, I had an idea something like this should be possible, and figured it out last night. My biggest mistake was starting with too many colors and having to do a lot more painting once I brought it down to six. It might have been nice if I’d started with a more stylized leaf as well, but once I got into it, I just kept going. Kudos to you for being in the fog, and deservedly so. You’ll have fun with the bit above, but as far as your sunset design goes, your hand-placement probably worked to your advantage, producing a better design. [As I type this, I’m dreading the thought of seeing 100’s of entries in future derbies based on the same technique. It could so easily be overdone, and it’s not really likely to be a winner. I was experimenting, and posted in the “you never know” frame of mind.]

Ah... I see. Thanks for the tip. This will certainly save me much time in the future.

I don't have a tablet at home, but my exceedingly cool giant Kensington trackball is okay for "inking" over lines. I just need to sketch on paper first and then scan it in to use as an inking guide.

Thanks very much. It really was something I spent a lot of time getting "just right." I flipped, resized, spun, and moved layers around until I got everything exactly the way I wanted. A brush, as you say, won't get the same effect as it can be somewhat random in placement and not as elegant in execution.
It would have been really helpful for filling in the center area, though :-)

All of that is irrelevant. it isn't about copyrights, it's about the fact that you can already buy the same basic shirt - i.e. there's nothing "orignal" about it. "similar shirts already exist" is a standard rejection rule.
