physicalmishap wrote:maybe its too literal for me? the hand is reaching out for spring? cause i was thinking what you said and then there is the zombie hand. more halloween to me.

I guess the zombie hand could be viewed as the yang to the flowers' yin: the dichotomy of life and death (undeath). If you really need a reason for it to be included, undeath in-and-of-itself could be representative of spring - life from death, albeit a bit twisted & given that a zombie alone wouldn't be enough to pass in this derby as on topic. Regardless, the depiction encompasses the spring theme of rebirth enough for me.
But I think it just adds a bit of whimsy to the flower garden with the incorporation of a popular meme, is all in good fun, and is executed well. The desire to impose a direct connection to Halloween exhibits a lack of imagination imao. But you're certainly entitled to your opinion.

I've already explained my reasoning on why this snowmen design was dissimilar to the simpler one already printed. My saying leaves would be next was tongue-in-cheek, but not by much. It's a slippery slope Woot has chosen by rejecting a shirt due to a similar object in the proper context (like, for instance, snowmen in the warming days of early spring). Just as an example: The derby for Halloween ought to be quite something seeing as most icons of that holiday have already made it onto a shirt here. That means no ghosts, graveyards, pumpkins, candy corn, zombies, vampires, sugar skulls, etc.

Oh, and lest I forget, no more squid or octopi. Ever. Been there. Printed that. Multiple times, too. Skulls, as well. Gone. Flowers. Leaves. Anything that is used in its natural context that has already been printed (e.g., squid swimming in the ocean, birds flying or resting in a tree, or even flowers blooming in a garden) is fair game.

That's what this rejection means, anyway.

The coming of spring (the actual derby theme) and warmer weather. Snowmen in their last days. Wow, who could have expected that tie-in?

And, yes, I do know about the tattle button. Thanks for the heads-up, though.

I've been thinking about this too. Most targeted themes are going to loose their art/fun factor and become a chore of comparisons and guessing if things are close enough (and by close enough that's woots subjective opinion) Skulls with "stuff on or around them" is too close too, Any clipart looking stuff that's layered over itself, a large amount of dragons/monsters, tree shirts by the dozen, etc etc. Anyone following this thread and taking it to heart is going to feel their creativity drained. There was nothing wrong with trees, skulls, more abstract shirts or even snowmen until now it feels
Even without seeing the "original" shirt I consciously decided against having the snowmen melting OR putting a sun in the drawing because IT WASN'T ABOUT THEM ACTUALLY MELTING, just knowing their death was going to happen someday down the road.
Since I highly doubt Woot will do anything about their decision at this point, does this mean that once it's "rejected" I can do with it as I please? Or do they still have control over it for 60 days?

Haven't we had winners with leaves on them before? Gosh, I guess this means all designs with leaves will be rejected, as well. What utter nonsense.

You can call me mean, but I can see the resemblance with this one and I understand woot's reasoning. I do not, however, see the connection between the argyles. Argyle is a pattern and will inherently look like others of its type even if a side-by-side comparison shows they are completely different. Melting snowmen are not inherently similar and yet this had a striking resemblance in thematic material. Granted, the style is different, but I also think that if I submitted a grimm on a unicorn in my own drawing style it would be rejected, regardless of whether I knew about jimi's derby win or not.

All of that doesn't mean I'm happy though. It's terrible when someone puts in effort only to be rejected.

Yeah this is really lame.
1. I didn't get a chance to buy the old shirt.
2. People were voting for this so it would have sold.
3. I think this is a better design than the old one.
4. There was no reason to reject this.

The composition had strikingly similar elements too. I'm not going to get into an argument with you about it. People get up in arms over a rejection and say woot's rules have changed and that it's not fair and start going off the deep end every week and this week it's this one. The same thing will happen next week. And the week after. Rejections and the resulting drama are kind of a fact of shirt.woot. I think people don't realize how often it happens because they don't notice until it happens to a design they really like.

PS - If you saw this and then saw it disappear, I accidentally deleted it. I'm glad it was my own post and not someone else's. >_<;
