Frustrated by our frequent prohibitions against text in Derby entries? Well, this week, text is all you can use. But there's a catch: the letters have to form an illustration of some kind. Whether you go the ASCII art route or imitate the lava-lamp lettering of the psychedelic Sixties, get your text into shape. We're not looking for slogan shirts. A "picture" of two or three straight lines isn't what we have in mind. So take warning: the moderation this week will be particularly subjective. If there's any doubt that your text makes a picture, be ready to feel the moderator's axe.

The Derby #36 Cyberpub. If we're not here, check over there. All are welcome.

First time here? Want to submit an entry and maybe forgot something? Think you're good to go? Read these rules for rejection compiled by derekfilley anyway.

Hee. I started to do that for the Canada derby, just for fun, but it never went anywhere.

Hey gang. Question for any past derby champs out there: Do the folks in the Spring fog find out today if their design was top three? Or do the foggers find out along with everyobe else if their shirt won? Thanks...

I thought about doing something like that but now I'm concearned that they really truly mean only text, and no illustrations.

I think that is an example of an illustration forming text and not the other way around.

Youre right, but it's not clear that they would specifically reject images used as text.

Oh, and comic sans FTW!

edit: now that I've read it a fifth time, I think that images as text would be rejected. Who knows, though, it's so sporadic.

Oh boy...another one up for interpretation. I read the rules similar to Dekonstruct. Text only and your text forms your illustration. The Born to Rock looks like an illustration that creates the text.

I think illustrations as text would make great shirts, but it sounds like the opposite of what Woot is asking. I think they want the text to create the illustration.

Is that how others are interpreting the derby theme? (I think Dekonstruct and I are in agreement.)

I'm confused too as far as text = image or can image = text.
Need examples. Otherwise I might sit out on this one and just make drawings for myself this week.

I would second ascii art being banned. There's tons of it out there, I think there would probably be a whole lot of stolen ascii images and it will be nearly impossible to track them all down. Not to mention there are programs that automatically make them, you just give it a picture and press a button.

Agreed, that's how I read the description as well. Presumably illustrations forming text would qualify as slogan shirts, which Woot specifically stated they didn't want.

Or, here's a free open source version too. Just so we're all on the same level with ASCII art.

I interpret the theme as one that if someone a few feet away would see your tshirt and view an image. It's only when they are face to face with you that they see text.

The opposite would be the born to rock design. It looks like text from a distance...and it's only when up close does one see that the letters are illustrations.

I think Woot is asking for the former....text that creates an illustration. But, I've been known to be wrong on many occasions.

Hopefully Joel or another staff member can clarify. But, for now, I'm going with text only and the text must form the illustration.

I agree. I'd hate to see a lot of illustrations run through the free program. I might buy one...really cool one. But, I certainly wouldn't buy all 3 if they were to make it to the end of the derby.

So, for variety...woot may want to add a few more stipulations to the derby rules. Just to make it a bit less broad.

I think that if ASCII stays in as an acceptable option, we should all submit a self portrait generated by one of these programs.
