That's his story . . . related after the fact by a "representative". He (apparently) didn't bother to provide that info to the flight crew.

Would've been a tougher situation if anything had happened to the aircraft due to interference from his phone.

true...he still should be fined.

I'd like to see the studies that say cell phones interfere with planes. Obviously others don't think it does.

I've always liked the rule though. That way I'm not sitting next to 5 people talking on their cell phones for 4 hours.

I agree with you. I believe there is very little actual evidence that they interfere given the disparity in frequency ranges between cell phones and aircraft comms and navigational equipment.

Morning everyone! It was 41 on my car thermometer this morning. Burrr... I'll be here for a while then I have to take my Mom to the Doctor. I'm really burning up my PTO here at the end of the year when I don't have much left. Took 4 days to help hubby. Another day to do committee stuff. Now Mom to the Doctor. Whew.

Going to catch up with EBW.....

In one of the articles it said that the FAA looked into allowing cell phones back in '04 but stopped last year. Probably the best decision they've made in a long time - maybe since they stopped allowing smoking in the planes (sorry Gman and other smokers, but that smoke didn't stay put very well). While I do feel lost when I don't have my cell phone with me, I can "unplug" for a few hours while in the air.

I think that last night Terri said that puppycam would only work between 1730 and 1930 and for only 7 peopel at a time.

I prefer a toaster oven (see grilled cheese discussion a few days ago) but it does take up more space. What about one of the under-cabinet mounted ones?

Argh, missed the specifics of the puppy cam. I'll try to get on tonight then. We might be able to do that. We've just had bad luck with Black and Decker toaster ovens. We got a stainless steel one, and it got about 450 degrees on top when it worked. You could toast bread ON it...

We have a B&D one - about 10 years old, and the top does get VERY hot. I use it to cook small things instead of heating up the big oven (kids frozen pizza, small batches of french fries, etc.). I don't think it's working as well as it used to, and I figure we'll be replacing it soon too. I was just googling around and I see that they have some sort of heat shield to mount it to deflect the heat away. Ours isn't mounted, it's on the counter, so I don't know how well those actually work.

Husband had a friend who had some papers or what-not on top of the toaster oven, and somehow the lever got pressed and the oven turned on. He wasn't in the room, and the stuff on top caught on fire. I think the damage was fairly minor (compared to what it could've been...) but since then we've kept the toaster oven unplugged when it's not in use.

The green people keep saying that appliances use electric when not in use if they're still plugged in. And a toaster was mentioned. I have a hard time understanding that.

And good morning everyone!

Morning poof! I can't see how a toaster draws current when not in use. Unless it's really fancy and has pushbuttons or a LCD screen :O. If it's a twist dial or a lever, it should not use anything. But yeah, I think my refrigerator uses power when I'm not in it too...

Morning Poof and the others who've wandered in since my previous good morning...

Then my husband would make the green people very happy. He's an electrician and I think he's obsessed with the stuff. God forbid a light is on, or something is plugged in when not in use. I can't even leave my cell phone charger or laptop cable plugged in when they aren't connected to anything. Frankly, I'm surprised we're not dining by candlelight each night.

Everything is shielded. They did a thing on mythbusters about it. But if you think about it, with all the terrorist stuff, do you really think they would be able to take down a plane with a cell phone?

Mr. Lada,

The M-W dictionary wrote:Pole
Pronunciation: \ˈpōl\
Function: noun
Etymology: German, of Slavic origin; akin to Polish Polak Pole, Polska Poland, pole field
Date: 1535

1 : a native or inhabitant of Poland
2 : a person of Polish descent

so if you're living there, then yes.

Mr. Star,

I did not see the episode to which you refer, but according to a discussion post on the web page http://mythbustersresults.com/episode49,

Allen:

I work on the electrical and avionic systems on commercial airplanes. The airplane that they tested this myth on is a late model airplane that has digital avionics with shielded data bus wiring, and I agree, should not have a problem. However, the FAA regulation is an umbrella so that analog airplanes such as the DC-9, DC-10, 737 Classics, and 747 Classics are covered. These are the airplane types that the show should have tested their signal generator on. I have been on a flight on a 737-300 where the pilot, after two PA warning announcements, stormed out of the flight deck to let the passenger see him up close and personal.

so, according to this gentleman, not everything is shielded, and there are passenger airliners flying that could potentially be affected by cell phones.
