Caligumby wrote:There are already 2 shirts rejected fro using & and + as text. The plus is not even a plus but in fact a logo which is probably copyrighted anyway but it was not rejected as that. I like Cho. I have bought several of his shirts, but I think rules are rules and X's are text no matter how you use them or how they have been used in the past.
I just think it's a stretch to call them 'x'es. Sure, they are shaped like x, but rather obviously they come from what eyes might look like when closed Obviously, this is a quick sketch, but the point is that the Xes are really a quick way to evoke the reality. well, the reality if lemons actually had eyes. ;^) (that semicolon is meant to be a winking eye and an open eye)
yeeter wrote:Wootvan, HA! Nice extension of the word play. Of course it would be rejected this week for not being on topic, but it would pair up nicely with this shirt. Maybe if they have an internet theme...
WAIT! If you had the car on the ocean it could fit...surfing is a summer activity.
Kool design, add beach towns and sell all over the world.
Re: Fun in the Sun
if this one breaks 100 i'll be happy. it's already placed higher than the Dalai Mama, so i feel it's been an overall success.
Re: An unexpected visitor
Great reworking puffpuff! Nice to see you could rearrange things
Re: H2 OHHH My!
Best dang shirt design ever! Was that drawn on a yellow sticky note?
alkenlem wrote:Best dang shirt design ever! Was that drawn on a yellow sticky note?
why yes, it was drawn on a very small post-it -- how astute of you to even ask that question. I then scanned it at a very high resolution -- gave the lines that special squiggly look -- no PhotoShop touching up was required! Thanks for the sarcastic "best design" comment, too!
Re: Suburban Blitzkrieg
Best shirt in the derby, hands down. You actually made me not enter this derby; when I saw this I thought that there is NO WAY I can get a better concept than this. GMV, the only one to get it BTW.
Re: Summertime
I'm so happy to see this fogged when i checked in! congrats, zenne. Crossing fingers and toes that as many of my favorites will get printed!
Re: Bite Me!!!
I suspect this will be rejected as not PG-13. Or as off-topic.
Re: Floating Giraffe
This is such a great idea, but it looks like half of your drawing didn't get scanned in.
Re: Attack of the Summer Blockbusters!
In the top 10!!! Way to Go TG!! Anyone else think summer is best spent in air conditioning?
Re: Solaradii
This shirt needs to be printed, no matter the actual ranking. If a better exception would be made to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd rule then I don't want to see it.
mjc613 wrote:I suspect this will be rejected as not PG-13. Or as off-topic.
I thought this was off topic as well at first see -- but, turkey legs, especially smoked turkey legs at fairs and festivals, are certainly summer fare

Regardless of what we know they are supposed to resemble and have resembled in previous sketches, it does not take away the fact that the eyes are still X's. The red + shirt was rejected because the red Cross resembles a + because it IS a +. This is text, plain and simple. It is a cute shirt and in any other derby where text was allowed, I would expect it to win. In this case, it is breaking rules that people seem to think only Cho gets away with.

That was what I thought at first too. Then I saw that there is a plus between the two graphic elements, like a rebus design: It wasn't the red cross that got it rejected, it was the black plus.
This is a beautiful shirt.... ! I really love the color combination and the flowing design elements.
Patchitect wrote:Ohhhh! Burn!! Careful who puts on your sunblock this year This message brought to you by the Ad Council of America
I accidently did this to my friend last year. I was putting sunblock on myself and then, being touchy feely, without thinking touched her back. Man was she mad at me...
Re: Summer Means ICED Tea
This is one of my favorites this derby. Please vote it up! I need my eskimo tea :D. Seriously, I love the tea color against the royal blue and the detail. For an iced tea lover, this is nirvana.
JadenKale wrote:Great reworking puffpuff! Nice to see you could rearrange things
Thanks to your suggestion! :D I really appreciate it ^_^
This idea was done many times in the Spring derby.
Re: I am the Waterpark
Very cool and diffrent. I just wish other people here would vote for something "diffrent" once in a while. Good luck.
Re: Oh Burned!!!
i wanna eat smores now :[
Re: BWOOP BWOOP... RUN!
this reminds me of gta, minus da toilet papering :p
This is my first derby.. so I apologize if this was done before.. Went with first thing that popped in my mind.
Woot's longstanding policy on no-text derbies is to remove anything that is clearly text. Some marks are both text and illustrative elements, such as O (circles), X (a common illustrative mark), I (dashing), and . (dots). This sort of marking has NEVER been outlawed from the derby, and no one has ever been rejected for it. In particular, X's have shown up in the eyes of creatures in several past no-text derbies without rejection.

Thanks! Means a lot coming from you.... I'm a big fan of your designs!
Gorgeous work! I love it!
Re: In The Clouds
So, I've never attempted to submit any designs yet, but I really wanted to try this one out to see what sort of reaction it gets. This shirt is inspired by the opening credits of Samurai Champloo and I figured what could be more like summer than taking on an adventure to find a samurai who smells of sunflowers?

Not the only... hm?
Re: Melt With You
Lovely. And what is this I am reading about an orange corset? It sounds like it would match my turquoise-esque hair. Perhaps we should speak more.

Possibly the best idea thus far. So glad the car I just got has AC. Another part of heaven, recently achieved. C:
this is rad. nice work! good luck!
You've received a lot of votes, even though I don't see where the summer theme is.
MKugs wrote:You've received a lot of votes, even though I don't see where the summer theme is.
I did give my rationale behind the design. Summer brings to my mind not only the heat, but also rain. The design in the sky is also a bit abstract and, to my mind, evocative of stars. Stargazing is a summer activity to me. I realize not everyone will feel that it's reflective of summer, but as I haven't been rejected, it seems I've hit the target well enough.

Don't get me wrong, I like the design, I just didn't quite understand it in relation to the theme. I love the Ray of Death though.

Thanks! And you're not the only one who didn't see it. I'm impressed by your Palm in the Sun. It hasn't been rejected so it must only have 6 colours, but it appears to be much more than that. Well done.
Re: Palm In The Sun
Looks like 7 or 8 colors to me.
Re: Palm Tree
Seeing as how this won't win, I really think I'm gonna have it made on my own. Has anyone else done that? Does AA do that, because I like the feel and fit of their shirts?
