Re: The Pica Republic

@Mitamasan and anyone else who might want to be on "the list" - to be safe, you should probably PM me so I remember, although I would likely check this thread anyway since it's my first ever fogged design. If I ever open a store somewhere, I'll put a notification in my signature too, so you could just keep your eyes peeled!

@gravitybound - thanks for the kind words. I'll keep your suggestions in mind in case I don't make it to print.

@narkus - I think you're the first commenter who prefers the dog to the fox! I'm glad you like the puppy. Hmm, if I had known of this alternate definition of "pica" I would have considered a different name.

@rglee129 - First letter basis! It's nice to have you in the fog, r, even though you kicked out my favourite design in this derby. Your sunny outlook sure helped you get up here fast! I don't layer shirts though, despite being Canadian.

@mlovesr - e is very happy!

@vnebel - Didn't even think of pikachu, hah! I think a few people haven't made the connection either, though most commenters have it figured out. The entire design is a typography joke:

1. The emblem depicts the classic pangram "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" (with some aesthetic modifications like having the fox be more orange).
2. The "motto" is actually standard filler text.
3. The name of the country refers to the pica as a unit of measurement common in typography.

Speaking of layering... I don't know if it makes a difference, but this shirt should be very breathable if/when printed. I cut away as much as I could in the print-ready file so no colour overlaps another.

Re: All Hail the Menagerie Republic! (Animalia v.2)

Here I altered my previous entry (http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=17019) in case voters and tee shirt lovers alike are not digging the "Republic of Animalia" phrase. I felt that it really doesnt need to be there, and a few of us conclude that the word "Animalia" is a bit awkward.

The story behind this design is simply this... A society of anthropomorphic creatures have formed a governing body, rallying behind the symbol of the all-wise, all-powerful owl. The four bars creating a circular shape behind the owl represent fire, wind, earth, and water –- the elements we all utilize to further our existence on this planet we live on. The path of footprints represents the multitude of species that all coexist in the animal kingdom. The flame on the owl's chest represents the drive in us all that pushes us forward in our daily lives.

Sounds good. Next time I make a design based on a ridiculous vegetable, I will consider brown. I hear no one digs subtle anyway

Re: Greedland

TG, this whole re-sub controversy is so dumb. I absolutely LOVE this shirt and I am so so glad that it and other shirts like it are getting another chance. GMV, and I'm glad to see that you're not listening to all those drinking the haterade. :]

Re: Greedland

Gotta say I don't see any problem with resubs and don't really see why there should be a limit to them. If the submission fits the theme or can be tweaked to do so, I can't see why a designer shouldn't re-use their hard work. Once a design has won, then it should be retired. If people are tired of seeing a design, they won't vote for it. As it seems many people are often glad to see these resubs get a second chance, I don't see any harm in them.

As for the same designers winning, I think there are a few designers on here who have developed a following because they consistantly have pretty, funny, unusual etc. designs that appeal to the voters. These designs usually sell out when they win so it is obviously not "rigged" voting. I wouldn't have a problem with setting a limit on how often a designer can win, like they limit wins in radio contests for example.

Just my 2 cents.

Do we still get cookies? I'd like oatmeal raisin please.

Of course, what would make this totally perfect in my eyes, would be to put the ribbon below or above the shield, and at the bottom of the shield show a volume knob... turned to 11. As is it is, its mostly perfect and gets my vote anyway.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH........ whatever.

Cookies are coming via SmartPost. ;) No guarantees on freshness. Hahaha

Thanks for the input. This might see some rehashing and a resubmit later. I really like how the digital readout turned out, and it'll probably work it's way into another design sometime in the future... as it's pretty obvious this has no chance of even placing in the top 10 now.

You know, this shirt could also be called the Pica Republic.
Another amazing illustration sokowa. Seems like it's just been a really low-vote-total derby.

I honestly haven't a clue what you're talking about (limited intellect, y'know), but it sounds oddly negative?

Things just...happen, and people like what they like. I don't think it's really a crime. Whatever way the most people end up happy is...well, good, right? (I suspect that's why they invented voting). So, I'm sorry for whatever it is, but, um. I'm wishing some happiness your way?

peppersagooddog wrote:I would agree that with resubs there should be a reasonable limit. There are some designs that got oh-so-close and should get another chance. Then there are designs that nobody wants to see again and again and have no chance of winning and yet there they are week after week until they get printed and thankfully go away.
I personally liked this one better sans text, but your king is still a gem Travis. If the voters can't see that here however, I would suggest a new medium. The message it conveys doesn't need words at all, it's not a schoolhouse...
Cho, your work is undeniably top notch, and I have suggested you make prints of your failed designs before. Here is me suggesting it again. The "myth" creatures design would have been my favorite of all time but for one small detail. I would pay top dollar for it and I'm sure other people would buy your prints if you put them all in one place and had a liink to it in your sig.
Derek, please for the love of all that is holy don't bring the gas mask back. I know you really like it and I know alot of wooteres liked it too, but god man have some dignity.
Kenney, you have improved so much over the past few months. Why not try to add a real design in there that is not pucker related? Do you realize you could actually win if there were no lips?
Shirtwoot, I've said it before and I'm saying it again. Get a grip and learn consistancy. Soon. If you don't want to waste time rejecting things at a certain level, then SAY so. Make clear and distinct rejection requirements. Quit pussyfooting around and learn to be concise. This passive agressive rejection style might be fun for some teenagers, but there is money involved here and people have a right to know what to expect.

Very well said.

Gimme a break with the "follows the rules perfectly." It's rules-lawyering at best -- you can't tell me that any mention of "Soviet" and someone's actually gonna say "Soviet where? Soviet Bolivia?" "Soviet" is a Russian word to begin with, and "America" is...well, America (North, South, Central, Latin, whatever) thereby invoking images of specific countries.
