mia3mom wrote:mia3mom's awards:
not to be confused with the awesome Attila the Mom's Monday Maunderings, these are 5 awards from the home of 5 people. I'm trying to keep the same award titles week to week, which is different from the wonderful awards at Best Losers or the other award-givers.

Best beachy/water entry

There were a lot of turtle entries this week, but I've got to give my award to the green-gilled fish in geekfactor12's Seasick. I've loved the facial expressions on her pancake entries and elsewhere, but the expressions on the fish & worm are classic. I love the linework on the fishie and the hot dog wrap, and the detail on the hooked worm is equally great. Using the blue shirt as the water in the background helps the entry stand out from the sea of green entries, and is a great use of the rest of the shirt without overdoing the ink.

Best mammal entry:

Green doesn't seem to be a very mammal-centric theme, but It's Going Out Faster Than It's Coming In by the power duo of chogentry, includes some wonderful origami rabbits. The "green" coming in slowly and the incredibly detailed "green" going out is simply wonderful. Unfortunately, it's also the story of my life right now, so I may have to wait a few days on buying one when it prints.

Entry I want to hang in our house:

I'm the first one to admit that JadenKale is one of the most-loved designers in my household. But we were amazed seeing What Lay Beyond the Emerald City?, a very different style for JadenKale. We're huge Wicked and Oz fans here, so this design struck a chord with us immediately, but we were hooked on the art-deco feel and the contrast of the yellow brick road and the multi-hued Emerald city.

Dragons? Do we have dragons?
not so much. But we do have a gorgeous fairy!

Green is for Camoflauge by redghia69 is a gorgeous design. there is wonderful linework, a slightly off-center placement, which helps the plants rise up the shirt naturally, and just a hint of color as the fairy blends in with nature. This is a great example of a shirt with just the right amount of detail, and lovely composition. I'd be thrilled to wear it, and look forward to more from redgia!

Top 10 pick:
If I could only wear one from the top 10, it would be

Tension at the Dumpster, by family favorite rglee129. Spring-ATRON was one of the first shirts we bought.
This shirt has a great mix of cute, details, ecology, and that twist of something extra - mischief? fun? devilment? This shirt wouldn't be as great without the self-righteous anger of the soda can or the looks on the faces of the non-recyclable toothpaste and coffee cup, and I just love it. I'd wear this happily to the next Farmer's Market or trip to the health food store. Or hey, the dump, too.

one extra award this week...
So Close award:

bluchez is this close to having 4 top ten placements in a row. His Soylent Green entry is a great take on an idea that has been done many times. But this one has the added benefit of geekery with the distiller. A fun entry that I voted for right away. you should totally vote for it too. it would be a great shirt!

JEEEZ. Hubs is going to get punched in the face some day.

He keeps arguing with establishments about their policies re: minimum charges to use a credit/debit card. Apparently it's illegal to charge a minimum price, and the customer is supposed to be able to use plastic whenever they like so long as the establishment accepts plastic. Obviously businesses don't get a lot of bang for their buck when that happens because they get charged a fee every time they run a charge. So anyway, rather than just being cool with the store policies, husband is like, "NO ACCEPT MY PLASTIC MONIES OR I'LL GET LEGAL ON YOU."

And believe it or not, the managers don't really appreciate it! I'm so glad I wasn't there for this last encounter; I'd be so humiliated.

You can tell your husband he's wrong. Its a breach of contract between the store and the credit card company, but the store is under no obligation to sell him a pack of gum on his debit card. The minimum transaction charge to the store for running a debit card can be as much as the cost of a single item (cup of coffee or pack of gum), so some small stores simply refuse to sell because they will lose money. He can report this to the credit card company and they might handle it themselves, or maybe they'll do nothing. Maybe carrying cash would help.

Mine, too.

Everyone thinks 'being cool' is more important than standing up for what's right. Or if they do stand up for themselves (i.e., arguing with a bully in these threads), they're seen as "bad" and "not a nice person". We all need to have our heads pressed and painted into big, round, flat yellow happy faces with a big word balloon coming out to the side that says "ZOMG!!!Have A Nice Day!!!"

Then we'll all be very, very happy because everyone is "being cool" and nobody's making a fuss.

Great picks this week. bluchez breaks my heart... he always submits great entries and he still hasn't placed. He's been hitting the top ten over and over again recently though. He also seems to be making the fog early before dropping out. And he just keeps plugging away.

I have enough friends with small businesses to understand the need for a minimum price, so I just buy one more of something I'll need anyway. no big deal. the arguing isn't fun for me.

as for the ETA, it's annoying me, too. I don't understand the need for a bazillion fake accounts

I am so completely depressed with the results so far. zomg. the shirts I wanted desperately...gone. not in the fog anymore. I was so stupid because I had the EXACT idea of one of the shirts now in the fog, but didn't do it cause I figured it would be to stereotypical. And I completely agree with the picks this week. the recycling shirt, hahahahahaha oh we love it! the toothpaste container just kills me. I did have a question though, what happens if the same person(s) place in the top spots? do they print both shirts? so is it like, possible, that someone could theoretically place shirts in the top three spots thus locking up the derby for the week? seems sort of unfair to me if that is the case. I would rather see one of the shirts become a daily and make room for someone else's shirt in the top derby spots.

and speaking of parenting..I will refrain from posting the pic, because I think it would cause many people to be violently ill- but I have been dealing with an intensely sunburned kid. he ended up with a blister the size of Guam on his shoulder. He was with other people and went swimming (without my knowledge) and did not apply enough sunscreen. We are in the middle of a heat wave, and it was 1 in the afternoon. the mom with them did make him put some sunscreen on, and after an hour a shirt. People who do not know him do not understand just exactly how much sunscreen we need. ROTFL
the only good point that came out of it, is I think he is FINALLY accepting the fact that we, with our lily white skin and red hair, will not, cannot, no way, no how, not EVER in this LIFETIME, obtain anything remotely resembling a tan. XD we are the red head variety with the uber pale skin, blue eyes and a few freckles. the kind that burn when we even THINK of going out in the sun. I am planning on bathing in sunscreen when we move to Mexico. though I do have to say it was very funny running around Mexico looking for sunscreen for "muy muy blanco" skin when I was there. Many things are cheaper there..but the sunscreen ended up costing about 20 bucks for a small tube! ROTFL

In the rare occasion that one artist has multiple placings in the same derby, there are no special rules. The derby always prints the top three entries, as voted on by Woot members (unless for legal reasons or because of rule breaking, one cannot print).

To me, that's the only fair way to do things. No point in penalizing people for doing well.

Sorry to hear he's so burned...hope he's not too miserable! I had to chuckle at what you said above, because my kids are the opposite...they tan if they even think about going in the sun. I can dump 50 SPF on them for a half hour trip to the pool, and they all come back with a gorgeous tan. (Wish I did; they get it from their dad's side of the family.) My daughter is worried, though...she's been told that tanning is unhealthy, so she's afraid that there is something very wrong with her that she is so tan. I keep trying to explain that as long as she wears sunscreen and is careful about how much time she spends in the sun, her dark skin is probably LESS likely to have problems from the sun than that of someone who has pale skin.

I'm Italian, German and Irish/Scottish. I go into the sun and nothing happens. I think the Italian and German/Irish/Scottish cancel each other out.
Mom tanned fast. Dad stayed out of the sun completely or he would burn.
I could burn, and I have. But if I burned, everyone else was totally cooked. Then I might turn light brown.

Hey Mia. I like that you gave out those awards... I felt dorky when previously giving out "awards", thus my posts of "hey vote for this one", but those you chose definitely deserve mentioning. The recycling one is by far my favorite this week, though I honestly didn't give all of the entries a look. I would have missed that one had it not been in the hotness when I logged in earlier.

I've spent just about every free hour working on my house and still have at least 2 weeks to go to get it ready to move in. Monday night I was there from 8:00am to 1:20 am Tuesday so that some guys could put in new carpet while I continued with the wallpaper removal. Looks like the drama goes on just fine around here.

That made me a little sick to my stomach, no lie.

Looking generic shouldn't ever be a goal, and I'm bothered that doing exactly that is likely a great money-making scheme in terms of the derby. How much does it suck that a printed DBH artist showed up at the derby, and instead of voting up his unique illustrations... the voters awarded the vector mishmash that he was too embarrassed to submit under his own name? Sigh.

Err... I didn't mean that to say that I wanted to be able to design generic art. That's why I added the "complicated collage" part.

I'm thinking along the lines of jimiyo's sweet "Death on a Pale White Unicorn", which is something of a vector collage (his own vectors, of course).

Yeah, that sucked you only got fourth, but that's still impressive. The highest I've gotten was 9th and it was probably the least inspired design I've ever made, so it wasn't extremely promising for me. Since you appear to be repeating your success I'm sure you'll win soon enough.

The sad thing about making it so high two weeks in a row is that now I have higher expectations. It's going to hurt next week when I don't do as well.

oh I am so jealous. *sigh* that would be lovely, to tan like that. You both are right. The really sad thing is, the way our ozone layer has gotten, the bad UV rays are much stronger than they used to be. Even African-Americans are getting skin cancer now. :S but, if she wears plenty of sunscreen and watches how much time she spends in the sun, she should be ok. The ironic thing is, people are (including myself) ending up vitamin D deficient from LACK of sunshine. XD I avoid the sun as though I am a vampire, but because of sunscreen and avoiding the sun many people end up with serious vitamin deficiency. so, its skin cancer and premature aging, or rickets ROTFL.
Of course, it took me until I was about 17 or so to finally accept the fact that I do not tan. and when I was a child, people did things like put baby oil on and roast themselves in the sun. we all wanted to look like Farah Fawcett and stupid carp like that. :P (yes, that totally dates me. the scary thing is many of the people here will have no idea what I am talking about. *sigh*) so I am sure I will have to be examining myself with a magnifying glass weekly and going in for barnacle scraping on a regular basis. :P

I want to try something like Sachmoe's "Breaking Light" now.

Breaking Light looks exactly like my back yard where I grew up outside of Seattle (and my parents house up there right now).

That would make a very cool shirt, but I'm guessing that developing your own unique style would be a more successful strategy. I'm sure people recognize Cho's entries from the thumbnail without even seeing the name, and it has to go a long way toward getting votes.
