But this is about art, not T&C. Art is about feeling. Art is about pouring yourself onto a canvas. Art is about pushing yourself to create something you're satisfied with. What I lack in skill, I more than make up for in pride 9 times out of 10. For that, I'd consider even the worst of my designs (and there certainly are a lot of them) to be higher art than vector collage. I don't believe for a second that this sort of "art" means anything to anyone, least of all the designer. It's a money shirt, not a creation shirt. I mean, I guess it's easy to shrug it off when you're raking in dough, but for me, I can't fathom feeling good about myself knowing I made money off something I took no pride in, nor fooling myself into taking pride for something I was not proud of. Maybe that's something I'll lose as I improve. Maybe that's more important to me than improving.

And seriously, have you ever seen Roger Ebert direct a movie? Critics don't need to DO to know what they're talking about

It's a ten-buck t-shirt. Get over it!

I don't see where all the animosity comes from. It's a nice design.

It's drawn in a nice almost vintage style with a good balance of line, form and composition. The combination of lights and darks really makes the design pop, and as far as being on topic, it hits the mark.

This is a design I personally would happily wear, as a nice decorative element for an outfit. The only thing that concerns me is the shirt color and if it's printable...but I'm sure that the artist can direct woot on what's a good shirt color to replace it.

Re: Breaking Light

I can't believe this has left the fog. This Derby is about GREEN and (IMHO) this entry is the best at portraying the theme of this Derby (it ceratinly deserves to be in the fog!). It's simple, yet complex, it gives you the feeling of what green is... what's not to like?

I absolutely love green and was very excited about this Derby, but I must say that a few of the fogged entries have me scratching my head... I'm amazed that people are rewarding people for combining clip art and making it green when there are other entries (some in the fog) that have used their talent and artistic vision to produce really great interpretations of what green can mean.

Come on people - vote this back into the fog! please

Most designers don't get a chance to 'direct' woot when they don't use the right colors, they get rejected. Technically this entry shouldn't even be here. Also what happens to the people that thought they were voting for a grass shirt then get an olive, or an olive shirt then get grass colored. Most artists don't get the luxury of combining two colors to get votes from people who prefer one or the other.

The only thing is, we don't get to say anything about the shirt when it wins. They just print it, if it's possible.

The design might be rejected, in which case those who have been objecting so strenuously to it will be vindicated and those of us who like this type of design (feminine, romantic, wearable) will just have to wait until the next acceptable design comes along and vote for that one instead.

I should think that this little dust-up would serve to give a clue to the designers here: there is a large voting body out there that wants "girly" stuff! Not cartoons, not zombies, not war, not skulls, soldiers, swordfish, or Medusas, not horror, not crows and presidents, but things a woman can wear and feel PRETTY wearing them!

I've been saying that since the first day I discovered Woot shirts.

Instead of stewing and b*tching and griping about how this design came about, and instead of wasting your energy bemoaning Woot's capricious rejection practices, why don't you all sit down and start thinking of ways to win the "pretty design loving" votes? Draw some hand-made swirls! Design a romantic heart-shaped flower! Use colors besides blood red and asphalt and puke beige! Get a freakin' CLUE!

Now that you know that there are enough votes out there to put a "swirly-girly-frilly" design in the fog, get on your A game and GO AFTER THEM!

redghia69 wrote:Um, well, that seems to be the opposite of what you said before, sort of. I think. In your previous post we were wearing the shirt when we moved the foreground to the right, and that was it. Now I think you’re talking about flipping the image, or maybe how it could be redrawn. The fairy is, in a way, secondary to the design, “camouflaged” as it were, and that she faces toward the side of the shirt doesn’t bother me in the least. The overall flow of the design is correctly (imo) directed toward the center of the shirt.

There are certainly things I’d like to have done differently, but given the image and the constraints of a 16x20 print area, this placement is working for me. The progress from the Spring derby (my first fairy) to this (my second fairy) is what’s interesting to me. If/when I do another, hopefully it will be better yet.

Anyhow, it is what it is. New derby coming up. Threadless? I’ve looked at the site, but I know nothing about their design criteria or the community. Someday maybe.

The first time I gave direction as if WEARING the shirt, and the second time as if looking directly at it. That's part of the confusion in describing direction on a shirt... I prefer to give it as if wearing the shirt, but I think most people do it as if looking at it.

Hehe, I think now that it's just a strange preference to put elements on that side of the shirt (my left, camera right), rather than the opposite. It's also funny because I just finished a design with placement on the unpreferred side.

I think Threadless does all-over printing, but I don't know much about the place. I just think you'd do well there (although you *should* do well anywhere).

You may not believe it, but all the drama probably helped propel your design up. Also, it's hard to say how much you lost by. Since "Breaking Light" was submitted before yours, the two designs might actually be tied. Even so, it's likely that you would have been fourth, had you finished in the fog, and wouldn't have won anyway. SDS estimates the Green Knight as 601 as well though it just as well could be 600 - or much higher. Regardless, you didn't just lose by 1 vote, and I doubt the drama really hurt your design.

Here's hoping for a few ties.

The snapshot of the hotness at the end doesn't seem to make sense to me - it shows you got one more vote than "Breaking Light" in the last 3 hours, but it still bumped you in the last 10 minutes? Although, I guess it could've had more than a 2 vote edge back at the beginning of the 3 hours or whatever. I don't know, just kind of odd to me.
Got my fingers crossed for a three way tie...

Hmm, just went in for 3 Randoms, when I haven't bought any shirts lately (although still checking frequently) so what are the chances of liking them!?! Oh well, couldn't pass up the mystery!

To say people get carried away is an understatement.

Some people on this forum need to reevaluate their lives, since they spend far too much time worrying about a stupid $10 shirt.
