Re: Dragonfly Begins

Love the design and the colors, but to be honest it's a little Christian-looking. From a distance, it could be a logo for an edgy young church group somewhere...

But hey, I'm no expert. All I did was use a dung beetle.

Re: Centipede Sandwich

Well drawn. Bold and interesting design. I don't quite get the theme of centipede and sandwich together, and Google doesn't point me to a definite reference.

Hey artulo, I was wondering if you would mind sharing how you put together something like this. My best guess is a custom brush, as I can't fathom either drawing every individual skull or copying/pasting repeatedly. Am I right?

In addition to the fantastic design and choice of colors, my favorite component is the off center placement.

What is important about 42, however?

eHalcyon wrote:Thanks! I counted the combs out of curiosity. I think it came out to 41 in this vertical version. I added one more for fun. 42 is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything.

I haven't actually read the book series, but I still know about 42.

He'll probably get "busted" by the Woot Police for possession of, um, vitamins. I still like the design which made me chuckle when I first saw it in the pre-derby comments.

This is my favorite. Did you make the Canadian one that was similar, with the mounties in a similar formation?

I like to do things the hard way I guess - maybe I don't know any better but making a custom brush out of the skull would be just as hard as the way I did it.

I drew a rough outline of the moth shape and then started with one drawn skull (eyes and nose cut out with clipping mask) in a solid color. Then it was a long time of paste/move/resize/stretch/skew/rotate until I filled out a wing...reflected that to the other side, filled the middle like the wing, and made the center skull and antennae. I changed color in some of the skulls for a pattern look and ran a brush on the underside of the antennae in two lighter shades.

All in all it went through four or five versions before this one, and I can't thank the folks that gave me good advice enough - it turned out pretty well!

For those concerned about the size of the image, this was all done in Illustrator, so resizing slightly smaller to more suit a print is not a significantly difficult change.

Thanks everyone for your votes and comments!

Re: La Cucarachas

so is it meant to be offensive or what?

I thought it was a cute play on the song, which was a good idea in my opinion.

If it's meant to call a group a meanie name then I don't like it.

Mr. Creator which is it?

Don't be sexist. Broads hate that.

It doesn't look like a direct reflection though. The skull positions and colours aren't mirror images... unless you reflected the smaller ones and added different, larger skulls? Either way, great job.

Thanks, I did have to tweak a bit and add, remove, rotate, etc to get it to look right. Also the colors are not mirror images I did those afterward. Originally it was one color.

Dung beetle dung orbs are fairly benign looking since it doesn't have the sausage or soft-serve ice cream shapes, so maybe it will be allowed.

(EDIT: whoa, the word "b*lls" got automatically changed to "orbs". Didn't know "b*lls" was verboten.)

(I also entered Centaur Polo in the Cryptozoology derby way back when. If I remember correctly, despite Panda Polo having been printed even then, it came awfully close to placing. I think it was the 4th place pick in the fog. How many zombie related shirts has woot printed? And how many continue to be entered? Are we really discussing this? Is my toast burning?)

ANYWAY, THANKS FOR THE VOTES, Y'ALL!!!!

eHalcyon wrote:They do, actually. Have you looked at the official template at all? It's downloadable on the submissions page and comes with a bounding box. There IS some flexibility with the boundaries, of course, but most artists generally stay within the approximate area of the box.

I've seen that bounding box but I've seen SO many designs that stray significantly outside of it, so I'd love to know where the lines REALLY are. Can you do designs on the back? On the sides? High on the chest? On the sleeves?

I'd stay within the box if I believed that that was the absolute limit, but clearly it is not.
