Staff

Our Lyrics Illustrated Derby was such a creative (and, we'll admit, commercial) success that we're doing what any music-industry success would do: taking our act to the movies. Design a shirt that illustrates, re-interprets, or takes literally a movie title without using any distinctive visual elements from the movie in question. In other words, your "Star Wars" shirt can show two stars fighting, but not with light sabers. Your "Iron Man" shirt can show a dude ironing his shirt, but not his metal combat suit. That sort of thing.

Title your entry "Inspired by" followed by the movie title you're illustrating, the same way you did in the Lyrics Illustrated Derby.

Incidental text is allowed.

Oh, lord. This ought to be all over the place. Could be great. But could be boring too..

How many star wars kid take-offs are we gonna see?

This theme was up for about 5 seconds last week when they were posting the fall information. I did not know if it was valid or not, so I did not mention it or do anything with it. Turns out it was. At least now we know they think at least a couple of weeks ahead with the themes.

Big question is: Did you prep in anticipation?

How "distinctive" is "distinctive"? I would not like to waste time pursuing a design that is borderline and gets rejected. That would be Hella-male-OOOOO!

For example using a spaceship, not any from the movie, in a star wars type shirt. Would this be too "distinctive"?

No. I did not know if it was valid or not and I did not see what derby number it was for so I just left it alone.

hopefully none, since reading the rules states that lightsabers would get rejected.

Oh wait, I forgot where I was.

Really looking forward to seeing what people come up with this one. This is the kind of theme where I could see myself getting all three shirts if things play out right.

I got mine....
Carl Spackler: So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

So... if I were to do "Young Frankenstein," could I draw a young version of frankenstein's monster and be okay?

So where would one start if he/she wanted to humor the idea of creating a shirt.woot entry but has little artistic ability? I have had tons of ideas and have had great images of what a finished design would look like but I lack the gift of being able to draw. What methods/software do you guys use, and are there good tutorials out there? I have somewhat decent experience with Adobe Photoshop but that's usually with editing and stuff, never creating from scratch. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Will someone kindly do a shirt inspired by the greatest movie ever made - Magnolia?

Being a huge movie buff, I can see myself possibly scooping up 3 shirts by the end of next week and am very excited about it! I'll be looking for the Caddyshack themed tee and crossing my fingers

Whoa, what does a flower have to do with Magnolia, besides the title?
I recommend everyone here watch it 5 more times (it will only take 15 hours from you). In fact, this whole derby should be Magnolia shirts!!!

I think the entire purpose of the derby is to not have anything to do with the movie , besides the title

I like this theme, but I think that the lyric derby was much cooler. A lyric just seems a little more obscure. I'm not really big on movie shirts.
