Re: The Birds

Historically, woot has had problems printing dark ink on dark shirts. That might scare some people away from voting, so you might want to consider resubmitting on a different shirt color. Just a thought...

Indeed. Black on brown absolutely doesn't show up unless it's either very bold lines/shapes or highlighted by a lighter color. Yours is neither, so just be aware that this would never print well.

Eh, it doesn't bother me that you entered a shirt as a joke. I'm sort of new around here, and I've noticed that this place is pretty exclusive and wayyyyy serious. I'm a Graphic Designer, I submit entries every now and then, and I have fun with it. I mean, I understand that you have to "earn your stripes", so to speak, but I've read too many forums that talk about "all the newbies coming in and ruining the derbies blargh blargh waggghhh." It's freaking ridiculous. Poop.

Yeah, me too. But I think it's great anyway! I like how clean & fresh it looks, and now I'm craving a (cherry) limeade! Your designs are nicely diverse, & both very good!

Yes, the "vinyl" is hidden in the glisten. Perhaps I made it too understated.

I wish this was doing better, I really like it. Sometimes I feel like the only person on here who actually likes the "cute" shirts. Must be why I don't do well on here very often, as mine are usually "cute". Oh well, I'll buy it if it pulls ahead!

Hope you don't mind but I actually voted down your Octopus in the hopes that it helps to secure this shirt once it gets in the fog (If it gets into the fog /fingers crossed). I promise to revote for the Octopus if it falls out of the fog.

Not to fan the flames but I don't see much to be offended in this shirt. To each their own I guess.

Can anyone tell me what does "meme" stand for? I have no guess this time.

Re: Coffee Stains!

As a coffee drinker I do enjoy the shirt, but again I'm struggling with how it relates to the theme of Art as Text. This could just be brown paint. This is why it is not getting my vote and I would encourage others do the same.

I like this concept... using the windows to spell out something, but I think I would have gone with a different word or phrase... the "got ... ?" thing is a little old.

Re: Ants In Pants!

I saw your comment on the coffee stain shirt, and I sympathize with putting a lot of work into something and not getting any feedback, so here are my thoughts on this design:

I think it's cute, but I wouldn't buy it. The design needs to be moved up to the chest area (right now you have it spanning the tree ants (hit reply to see what woot is filtering), which is less than flattering on both males and females), and then you should add more ants trailing down to the bottom of the shirt. I also think it's an old joke, and many people come to the derbies looking for a new joke or a fresh take on an old joke. I also think you are probably suffering from the "previous derby syndrome". That is to say, there was a Bugs derby this past summer, and most of us had our fill of little, crawly creatures for a while. I hope some of this is helpful to you in future derbies.

Love it! But yeah, will most definitely get rejected since it has nothing to do with the theme.

That's true. I did miss a great opportunity to use a terrified Oreo in place of the "O." Oh well, this was mostly a drawing and scanning exercise. Normally I create everything 1st gen in Illustrator. I'm trying to get better about drawing out the concepts first before render and this helped. Plus, it was fun to boot!

My apologies to blammoed (btw, this shirt is great - love the cow & chicken and I am voting for it) for this temporary hijack, but...

@ jahrpm: What?! What does that even mean? Why would you be surprised that crop circles haven't been used more in a derby titled "art as text"? What about that would have inspired a large number of crop circle entries???

Thanks to the people who like and voted for my shirt. I was really proud of it too... and would really like to wear it. I guess there's not a lot of skiers in the woot community.

Mondak... the money would've funded my Whistler trip this February (first time skiing west of NY)!

Unless I get a sudden couple hundred more votes, look for this shirt in a few months at cafepress. Unless someone has a better site they would suggest to print/sell shirts??

Re: Ants In Pants!

I'll be honest with you. The only reason I pulled this one up was I read your reply on the coffee jerks entry. I like your choice of colors. The ants look great on the green. It Appears you're just usin one ant, however, from the looks of the low red pic. I'd have gone with at least 2-3 to make it less redundant. I think your biggest problem with being overlooked is the preview. It's rather boring. I'd recommend a more in-your-face pic to catch peoples' eyes, such as a zoom-in on the head of one of the ants. You may want to resub with that preview change to see how it works out for you. Best of luck.

Re: Ants In Pants!

I saw your post on the coffee stain shirt, too. Here's some feedback for you: You're obviously a decent artist. I can tell from the close up of the ant that you have there. It's very well drawn. The design itself isn't very interesting, though. You need to spice it up in someway. Maybe making the ants clustered all over the shirt, so that the shirt is more ant than material, or having the ants making different shapes that might give some new meaning to the saying "ants in the pants," not just simple letters. I'm having trouble thinking of something really spectacular, but something along those lines is what I mean. And it's true that "ants in the pants" is just kind of an old saying without anything different being brought to it. Your design is simple, and I think "simple" usually only works if you have a really creative idea backing it up.

That's what I think. Don't stop submitting. I think you could do some really good designs (honestly), that's why I'm bothering to give you some feedback.
