Using a book about drawings as an illustration is lazy and its no better than using a paint-by-numbers book to show off your skills in color-theory.

Just because these style of drawings can be found in the book (in point of fact the actual book is on how to draw cartoon animals) doesn't mean the title hasn't been reinterpreted. I assume there's an eclipse in the book Eclipse. There's a lion, witch, and wardrobe in the book The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Just because it uses an element that can be found in the original book doesn't mean the title hasn't been twisted around.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing but teenage vampire sex in eclipse. Little else. Probably no eclipse, tho. I'd doubt there are even full sentences.

And I personally applaud this shirt. It's an easy way out as a title, but the way you took that title and built a concept around it is what makes it shine. I was going to headdesk/facepalm/faceplasm (what do the hip wooters do these days?) when I saw the title... oh god, someone crapped 101 animals on a shirt... but you made a concept from it. And we needn't discuss the rabbit... what better animal to make your point? For anyone else it would have ended up a cop-out. You took a gimme idea and took it to a whole other level. And that is why you win so damn much.

Gotta disagree with this. I believe that most people who looked at this got the re-interpretation aspect immediately. But since some people didn't see to "get it", Travis had to lay it all out in simple terms. Often it's the simple stuff that's hardest to explain because most people just understand it.

As for using a book about drawings - I thought that was supremely clever. While everyone else was looking for popular novels and classic literature, Travis thought outside of the box. I applaud the creativity and don't think it's lazy whatsoever.

My interpretation is that he's painting, ie: "rounding out" the moon. It's taking a pretty liberal twist of basic diction and syntax, but I can see it.

I feel like I should dislike this, but I cannot bring myself to. It's quite interesting visually, and the giraffe is a great "huh" element. My main concern is the dark silhouette on dark colour, as always. We'll see in the print, I suppose.

There seems to be many people who don't "get things" around here. It's like they are purposely being obtuse and excessively negative. It's weird.

Anyways, I enjoy this design. It's a very cute rabbit. (:=

I just kept waiting and waiting. I was sure someone was going to... but alas, I had to take it into my own hands. "Everyone Poops", a children's classic. My kids love this book, I had to do something. Potty humor is an integral part of parenthood, not to mention it's just funny seeing a snake on the toilet.

This reminds me of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Anyway, like like the idea, but I feel like I grew out of this style 10 years ago. I'm on the bandwagon and think that the hot chick morphing or swirling is getting pretty trite... even for a tee-shirt site. It just reminds me of something my 40 yr old D&D playing creepy neighbor dude would wear.

Judging from all the artifacts in your image it just looks like you made it too small. You should be using vector images for this kind of thing before rasterizing so you can scale it without losing resolution.

It seems a big aspect of competitions is in understanding the rules to submit a proper entry. Maybe you just need some more time before submitting another entry to practice.

wils9745 wrote:Is there really anything to "get"? I appreciate "Travis" filling me in but none of his reasoning was really "outside the box".

I think you were clearly NOT getting it. You came across as not even realizing there was anything TO get, just that I took a drawing from a drawing book and some art from a clip art site. My design is based around an actual idea, so yes, there is something to get, whether you think it's funny, clever, or not, it's there to be gotten.

You said yourself you weren't getting it, so I laid it out point by point because it seemed like it would help you understand what other people were getting right away with no words at all. The idea can be summed up in one line. I used paragraphs because you pointed out several different reasons about why it wasn't a reinterpretation, why my work was lazy, how part of it looked like it was off a clip art site etc, things you were all wrong on.

As for you still calling it 'lazy', I honestly think you're just clutching at straws for something to attack it on. The idea isn't lazy, the artwork isn't lazy, and I'm certainly not lazy. I'm sure you can find dozens more entries that ARE all those things, so why not go pester them.

And since I'm here, thanks everyone else for the support on this entry!

What I meant was, if by some magical chance, the submission made it to the top 3, all they would have to do it eliminate the text, since in the print-ready submission the colors are separated into layers. It would take a mouse click or two. And besides, people are already saying it will get rejected because it has Dubya in it. Kind of a lost cause at this point. BUt thanks anyways.
