Not at all. If that were the case, nobody new would ever win. If the site was just a popularity contest, then either my design this week shouldn't be so high up, or my design last week shouldn't have been so low. But lo and behold, I went nowhere last week, and this week I'm doing well.
As for David, I think he's an ok guy. He's sometimes a little snobby and has made some pretty rude comments in the past. However, the one he gave you was extremely polite.
I'm sorry you feel so offended and I apologize if ever I sounded patronizing to you, because that's not how I meant it. =\
