eHalcyon wrote:The latest any design has won is on Monday. It's happened a few times, when the design was good enough. Saturday submissions commonly win. Some even think it may be better than submitting on Friday, since you then avoid the early rush under which your design might have been lost. It also gives you an extra day to polish your design. It's debatable, and you should decide whether or not to try for Friday or Saturday on a case-by-case basis. Sunday and Monday subs are usually used for lat minute "Eureka!" ideas. The best reason to submit on Tuesday is to try to break the latest-time record.

Also, remember: if you think your idea is good enough, and don't mind it being locked into a contract for 60 days, it is ALWAYS worth trying for an HM. At worst you get a free shirt, and at best, you have another shot at printing.

Re: Joan of Arc - Righteous Indignation

Neat lighting, noisdois. The buildings in the upper right sort of form a face - intentional?

My only criticism is that the design seems a bit boxy. And, I suppose, most people wouldn't realize that it's Joan d'Arc just from looking at it.

woemcat wrote:This is friggin hysterical! What might have made it even funnier would have been to have an angel behind her and she's wearing earmuffs (or holding her hands over her ears saying, "nyah nyah. not listening.").

I seriously considered it.
But I felt the image still had to have that serene religious quality to retain full impact, and I didn't want to do another cartoon. As I've done several and they tend to fare poorly on a shirt.

That said, I DID disclaim in my opening comment how the orthodox would have needed it to be earmuffs.

You probably know this, but I'll state it for those that may not. It was his left ear that he injured in the history that we all know. That's why I chose to show his left ear intact. For some strange reason, he painted his own portrait (the one with the bandage) inaccurately. This was very confusing to me when I was trying do decide how to portray him.

I wasn't sure about it and was going off the portrait Adder posted. But my point still stands. Maybe in this alternate universe, he cut off his right ear and painted his portrait correctly. Or he cut off his left ear and painted it wrong (not so alternate), as well as becoming a pirate.

Ear or not, pirate or not, it's still good.

Re: I cannot tell a lie...she did it!

George Washington, father of our country and our first president was the man who could not tell a lie. Or was he? If George was to have blamed the cherry tree incident on his sister instead of being the honest man we've all come to honor, our country as we know it would never have come to exist!

First derby, so I hope you like it!

This is exactly why I don't like this shirt. A good shirt is one that is self-explanatory devoid of context. Not knowing the derby theme, people should be able to figure out Ever just think about breadsticks? the design is about. I don't think this idea captures that at all.

On a side note, I think the art is great, and this would make a great poster with some sort of caption to explain it. But alas, as a shirt, yet another victim of "poster shirt" disease (something great to look at, but not so great to wear).

Woot chooses HMs from all non-winning submitted entries, which earns the designer a free shirt and a place for that design in the next double-take (second chance) derby. Non-winning double-take entries also have a chance at being printed as an Editor's Choice after the derby.

What bothers me a lot about these contests is that so many seem to rely on a formula to get votes. For example, there are 18 dinosaur shirts (counting rejects), and 8 robot shirts. Those also seem to have popped up a bunch in the past. I personally like it when people can come up with more original ideas such as the "alternative" history of Kurt Cobain, etc.
