What the ..?

Why did "Midnight Ride of Marty McFly" along with some others get rejected for not depicting real history, whereas this remains in the fog?

Seriously, "Midnight Ride" was parodying the midnight ride of paul revere with Back to the future ... how is that any different from this shirt?

Don't get me wrong, I like this shirt, but what the hell, woot?

Re: Lady Liberty

Very cute design, but yeah, the dinosaur looks like it's too low on the shirt (sometimes woot rejects for being outside the printable area so be careful!)

Navy looks green on my computer too. If those are Pantone colors, they look really nice though! :D

Also generally entries that are submitted Fri through Sunday have a chance, although most winners are submitted on Friday. (this site has a lot of fun statistics http://www.shirtsonsale.info/2007/09/shirtderby-winners-by-date-and-color.html)

Re: If Hitler was a Painter...

Hitler's dream in early adulthood was to become a famous painter. The bottom line? He was denied entry to the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna after being told he was "unfit for painting." We all know what happened after. But what if he got in?

As others have said, it's not about zero fiction. it's about some history.

... but the point he's making is that many of the shirts that were rejected did include "history" intertwined with another fictional medium.

Take the Back To The Future shirt for example. Back To The Future is a film that has many elements that are ingrained in the fabric of cinematic history. 50 years from now people will still discuss the flux capacitor and remember the immortal character that is Doc Brown. The "Midnight Ride" shirt that was rejected combined elements from that movie with elements from the historic story of Paul Revere. That's really no different than this shirt, which combines Columbus' historic discovery with Gilligan's Island.

Granted I don't think the McFly shirt had any chance of printing, but I still believe it's hypocritical to reject one and not the other, and frankly I'm shocked that you (Adder) disagree on that point, as you've been a staunch advocate for clear and unbiased rules for these Derbies for as long as I can remember.

I don't mean this to come off as an attack, but is it possible you're a tad bit biased in this situation because the design in question is by Edgar; someone whom you are openly a huge fan and supporter of?

I think the midnight ride shirt is the only rejected shirt which was both movie and history, so I understand the issue. However, while the one in question clearly includes columbus landing on an island, McFly has a delorean, michael j. fox, and a silly hat. The concept is certainly marginally historic, but the execution is just a movie scene with a hat. Edgar's shirt is an equal mix of history and fiction.

It's a rather moot point anyway, though, since if it wasn't rejected for being a movie, it likely would for being an image lift from the movie.

I agree, as it took me a few seconds to "get" the Paul Revere reference, and I'm fairly confident that most people who see the shirt would think it's simply a Back To The Future shirt. This shirt does encompass more history than the McFly one, and I do believe it deserves to be here.

Side note, as I pointed out in the Van Gogh thread, great job on that shirt; awesome idea, and even though I'm not the biggest fan of asphalt shirts I may have to buy one if it prints.
