These examples imply that the images of Einstein can be copyrighted by different parties. I believe this will apply for those in USA.

My submission was based on the sketch that I have done sometime ago.

"As for Einstein’s image, Hebrew University of Jerusalem has authorized Beverly Hills’ Roger Richman Agency, “the preeminent licensing agency, specializing in protecting and promoting the personas of world-renowned entertainment and historical personalities,” to license Einstein’s image for promotional purposes and to “prevent unauthorized use of the likeness and image of Albert Einstein.” That is correct, a Hollywood agency, specializing in protecting the rights of movie stars claims to have exclusive rights to Einstein (and Sigmund Freud). "

i mean, there was a reason it was rejected.

I don't really get it, or even like it, but major kudos for coming up for the weirdest concept...and the drawing is really incredible. I don't blame other people for liking/wanting it.

I wonder if woot ships to Israel? they've rejected designs before for infringing copyright that had expired in the us but was still valid in the EU. I'd guess that, if they ship there, then Einstein is off limits for good.

You should read the whole article. That's just the intro. The purpose of the article is to justify why this statement

is not justifiable

In terms of alternate history, Dolly is known for being a successful cloning experiment. Not so here. :p

heh. don't all your designs have the same main face?
-just kidding.

I wonder how one would express that a group of animals are cloned (in the absence of using text)?
maybe have them all doing the same thing at the same time? or a single distinguishing feature they all share- a turned down ear, or something.

of course, then you'd get accused of copying the same image all over your design.

Maybe the mice DID get there first. The rabbits could have faked the landing on the moon thing. I think I heard that it might have been some big conspiracy theory, and I wouldn't put it past them. Rabbits are pretty shady.

Re: Joan of Arc - Righteous Indignation

Maybe this wasn't your original intention, but I like the idea that rather than being burned at the stake, she burns down the town. I think the sword helps us know who she is-- there aren't a lot of heroines from that time period, really. Only thing is that part of the reason she was burned at the stake is because she refused to wear a dress-- but of course, with a silhouette, you really need the dress so we know it's a woman.

Nice work!

Re: Cloning failure

This is pretty cute, but I agree with the others when they say this probably isn't Dolly-ish enough. I thought eHalcyon had a very thoughtful critique (I rarely see people here giving more than 'that doesn't look right'). A befuddled scientist in the background would be perfect. Perhaps with a 'cloning department' tag on his jacket? But then it probably wouldn't be incidental text..

The only thing that truly bothers me about this is you can tell you copied and pasted the two main bodies of the sheep. I doubt it's something others would notice as they walked past though. ;P

godfreytemple wrote:Thank you for de-lurking. I really appreciate your support.

It turns out that the piece I've referenced and modified is either public domain or an abandoned work. After digging for what at least felt like forever I was unable to uncover an artist credit or a date. Even the sites that sell it as a print have no one to credit it to and, at best, list the artist as unknown.

I have not yet decided what to do with it. I have seriously considered re-rendering it, even knowing that my illustrative style lacks the grace and depth of the design as it now stands.

Submission to the Derby entails a 60-day exclusive to Woot. I'm not sure if being rejected wholly cancels it. So It will be a little while before I offer it (in any form) for sale.

If you want to keep tabs on it, feel free to visit my deviantart gallery (linked in sigline).

And I tend to agree about not having the words. It reads fine without, even if the title is a tad amusing too.

Again, thank you RedFedora.

While I don't wholly agree with this design, I must say that, at the very least, don't auto-trace a picture. If you're not submitting to woot, Trace it by hand (yes, I know it's tedious), or use a tablet if you have one. Higher quality artwork will come of it, and you'll get a(n even) better response. If you _are_ submitting it to woot, you'd have to use it as a 'reference' photo, and direct tracing (auto or by hand) is not allowed. More difficult, but shows more skill on the part of the artist. I believe it was rejected because of the auto-tracing. There may have been other reasons as well.

Re: It was the Apes all Along! Darn them all to Heck!

Because of the immense amount of suck I've presented to you this week, I now feel obligated to justify it's P O O R performance. I suppose spending 30 minutes TOTAL on a design is not a good idea for trying to win, but at least I got some sleep on a thursday for once! I apologize to all my loyal supporters and I promise better this week. I'm really just trying to get back into the swing of things. I have just started a new job and have a lot of changes happening so I'm looking forward to tomorrow and what it has in store for the Gavin Shenoda of the Clan Shenoda...

There can be only ONE!!!!!

Ok, all Highlander references aside, make sure to check my designs this next derby because I'm gonna Trick 'em out Hard Core!

Yes indeed.
As I said to eHalcyon earlier, the tracing is a mistake I'm not going to be making again.

In the meantime, Woot's derbies will have to continue suffering my cartoonishness while I build my skills.

Thank you for the valuable advice.

Wow. Now there's a narrow-minded thing to say. Last year I damaged my cornea and had to wear an eye patch for a little while. It in no way hindered my ability to paint. Not even to mention the many totally blind artists who put out beautiful, amazing work.
