Yeah, I'm not going to lie there's nothing wrong with a shirt just because it's cute.

Nice shirt! It's not exactly my style, but I like the art work.

The world also doesn't end if a good tshirt doesn't print, but the difference is, if something wins due to a horrible call, they're the only one getting paid.

No one is saying this is life or death. We're simply saying that, in a contest with over 100 entries any given week, it shouldn't be too much to ask that three of the top 25 pieces (based on quality) be what gets printed. People get more worked up over things that effect them less. No matter what woot does, it will be unfair to customers... either there will be a monopoly on guppy design, or there will be a print schedule that doesn't reward on popularity alone. How about woot does what's fairest for the designers, instead?

"quality" is a TOTALLY subjective concept in this context. I didn't see anywhere in the derby rules where it says, "vote for the design that you think best captures the true essence of the theme." I'm pretty sure woot wants to make money by selling shirts, which is why they let us vote for shirts that we want to BUY (I'd want one!), not that will support the t-shirt designing community's efforts to achieve the perfectly crafted t-shirt (I'd admire one from a distance!).

maybe voting for a shirt should include a commitment to buy it if printed...that should yield some interesting results haha.

or all of us could read Travels of a T-Shirt and see how consequential all these shirts we love (and I have dozens, believe me) really are!

Re: INSPIRED BY GI JOE

I thought this shirt was...OK. It wasn't a great shirt. Maybe it's because I'm not a GI Joe fan (in that I don't care, not that I dislike it).

It took me a minute to get it. Then I went 'Oh...Joe...coffee...a pun.'

I definitely think it should be printed over some of the others in the fog, though. It's very wearable and a lot of people will like it.

Reminds me a bit of the ninja turtles shirt in that regard.

So, if people are not supposed to vote with the theme in mind, why does woot give themes?

Everyone wants to make money. But there are billions of consumers in the world. Selling for a mass bloc instead of selling what you believe is worthy of printing is the only way to stand out. Because seriously, when woot only sells 600 copies worth of a daily, do you really think they're not turning a hell of a profit for the day?

Other sites are able to continually be diverse every time they roll out new shirts, and that is why people keep checking them. They are also able to shape an identity if they wish... there is a "Threadless" shirt, and a "DBH" shirt. A "Woot" shirt, if you were to define it, is bottom of the barrel... a design either created for people who find walmart clothing too challenging, or a design from an otherwise solid designer that comes from the failure pile, because who's going to give their best work to a site that doesn't appreciate artists? Profitable or not, being OK with that is pretty pathetic.

Re: Inspired by: Monk

This shirt was selected for the Double Take Derby with the belief that it was on a Brown shirt color. It's probably our fault for not going deep into the threads of each design that gets nominated for an HM/Double-Take, but we definitely don't want to sell a product that looks radically different from what people have seen in the Derby and voted on. If this shirt does place and qualifies for a print, it will be printed on Brown.

Even though our templates aren't perfect, we have tweaked them time and again to more accurately reflect our shirts' colors. I guess we need to be far more vigilant about not allowing entries that are not on our official shirt colors. If you don't have the most recent templates, folks, I suggest downloading them ASAP.

I don't know what thread this is in, or what the ongoing debate is, but I found this quote interesting. I immediately thought of those movies like Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans. At least a couple of million people desire to see those movies, and yet that fact does not make them good. It may be good to them, but there's always another stratum on top of personal taste that takes into account critical, historical, and cultural taste. There's a lot of bad things out there that some people desire (crystal meth, Sandra Bullock movies) but just the fact that they want them doesn't make them good.

That said, if you like whatever shirt this thread represents, vote away.

Cute and witty. Deal with it, people. They're t-shirts, not "wearable art." This is $10, free shipping Woot-Land. You want fancy stuff that costs a bunch and doesn't appeal to people who aren't art students (or who hang around on the internet all day), go to threadless.

No you deal with it, you're the one who's spending $10 for it.

I just emailed Woot about this and am hoping for a reply soon. But for those out there that are worried about the black on brown issue, I'm hoping to be able to adjust the design slightly.

Since I'm only using 5 colors in this design, I'd like to add a 6th color(slightly lighter than the brown of the shirt) to the monk to keep the black details of his robe visible. I'm hoping that would resolve alot of the issues raised in this thread.

Thanks for all the support everyone. My initial reason for matching the color to the actual shirt was to reduce confusion for the buyer, not create it. So for that I sincerely apologize. I hope the change is not great enough to change people's opinion about whether they like the design or not.

When I said brown mostly worked, I meant mostly. The trees are now missing and are wholly brown due to the shirt color. I have no doubt that along with the shirt color the inks must be adjusted to the same degree that the shirt color has just now been.

This time around the brown has been eyedropped, interestingly, from the Let's Play shirt. The comp color is on the left and "Let's Play" brown is on the right.

You might have selected it thinking it was brown, but I'd say that way more people voted for this knowing it was on olive- printing it on brown is going to be a huge disappointment to a lot of people, but I don't think anyone would be confused or feel like they voted on something radically different if it were printed on olive. I think it is a mistake to print this on brown.

Can we stop with all the "Translation: (insert guppy here)" posts please? You didn't just oversimplify the argument, you heard only what you wanted to argue against, and from one of the people that was actually very polite about not liking this shirt. Especially since his last sentence (which you did not quote) said if you like it, vote for it.

Thanks for clearing up the edit button, eHalcyon.
