Re: We Rule the Air

I don't understand how anyone could consider this appropriate for the current global climate. Not only is the release of this shirt far too close to the threat of Somalian piracy (and far too ignorant of it), but it also carries strong tones of 9/11 and the continuing fear that associates flying and terrorism. The design is great, but I guarantee that anyone who wears this will be met with appropriate discontent from more sensitive individuals.

Both you and TGentry are way over analyzing this shirt. There is no method to pandering.

I like this design. I think the only thing that would have improved it is maybe make the black outline thinner. Other than that I think it's great.

Thanks for your comments. I will keep the thought in mind about the finer lines. It's great to hear from others who have these little fish. I have really enjoyed having mine through the years. Hopefully Merlot will live beyond the usual 2-3 years. He is a great art inspiration.

It doesn't always take a lot of time to make something that's wearable. There may be better shirts not winning but there are worse shirts that are and have won in the past.

Re: Lost My Breath

I wanted to make a good beach shirt, so I'm glad you guys think it is. Thanks for the comments!

I'm PADI certified, by husband is ADC certified, and we always thought it was funny that dive shops sell shirts with diver skulls and skeletons on them. Like, would it really be cool to you if you ended up like that? Anyhow, for a less morbid take on this shirt, just assume that the tank fell off the boat.

We were diving off a tour boat in the Bahamas and word got up to the guys running the boat that there were some huge lobster near us. I'll never forget seeing them all immediately jump off the boat, tanks held under their arms, and go after the lobster with one hand. All ended well, but I guess my point is that tanks aren't always completely secured.

Why is this entry allowed to fly but not this one:
http://shirt.woot.com/Derby/Entry.aspx?id=31145

Not that I think this one should be disallowed. I think the other should be allowed to stand.

That's true. Should've probably left the scenario in a 2d setting like traditional cartoons.

Teknikas wrote:That's quite respectable that your trying to change it up a bit. I really don't care for your past designs as they just seem pretty juvenile...like something a little kid would like/wear in my opinion. This shirt isn't really my style or something I'd wear, but it's slightly more "grown up" and something I could see someone over age 5 actually wearing around. You are obviously a talented artist and it's cool to see your style and subject matter changing and growing a bit. Maybe next derby you'll kick out something that'll be just awesome and I'll vote for it (not because of your name being on it like many seem to do, you have quite the following of seemingly obsessed groupies...kinda creepy. Mixer23 for example), but because it may be something that I'd like and wear Change is good and challenging yourself to do new things and break outta the same ole same ole is cool, keep it up! When ya work outside of your comfort zone you may be surprised what ya might stumble upon Who knows, maybe a whole new "following", j/k :P Anyways, I'm done ranting. Keep on keepin' on however you see fit, just my two cents that you may decide to throw into the analogical 7/11 penny tray.

Well, that was unexpected. Thanks. I hope you wont stop with the negative comments when I do something you hate, though. Someone's got to keep me on my toes. ;)

Yes but anyone who happens to know this tool in Illustrator will see it blatantly right off the bat, and won't be able to take their eyes off of it. Its kind of like using a lens flare on a poster... (Seriously just go into Illustrator and mess with it and you'll see what I mean.) I'm not saying that it is necessarily a bad effect, I just don't like it because I know how cheesy the tool is.

Also, I'm still very bothered about how the kites just end abruptly at the bottom... poorly thought out in that area IMO. And like others have said, I feel that other designs in this derby are more resolved.

WOW. i just now took the time to really look at this shirt, and I have to say the subtle layering of details in this is crazy awesome--I'm still not sure if I've noticed everything.

I doubt I'd wear a skull on a shirt, but what an awesome illustration!

Re: CMYKF5

I'm not going to lie, I'm not really feeling this design the way it is now. I think it looks awkward with the tornado just ending and starting on the shirt like that. I really think this could be done well if it was all-over printed and hit the floor as well as touched the left shoulder.

Until then, I feel other designs are better in this derby.

Also, CMYK has been done to death... even if this design is slightly refreshing take, it needs to be perfected to really merit a CMYK print IMO.

CrescentDebris wrote:Yeah, I agree with that criticism. I didn't really think too much about it at the time. If I did, I would have spent another couple of hours on it. I was all focused on the characters. But maybe the detail in lighting and reflection makes the absence of scenery that much more apparent. I'll keep that in mind next time.

I was also tied up with my second design (or technically my first which I needed a break from) which I've spent a ridiculous amount of time on and still don't have just right which is quite disappointing. I think its awesome but I don't like to submit something when I still see problems with it. I'll still work on it and get it right just for the sake of doing it as I hate abandoning projects. Maybe if there's another theme that it fits in I'll submit it then, correct and as I want it. So yeah, no 2nd entry from me this week like I planned.

Thanks everyone for the support.

I like this response, and I just realized I didn't vote for this shirt, so GMV now.

Well I guess he could add a Somalia flag on the Pirate ship. Woot seems like the wrong web site to be on without a sense of humor.

I'm weary of all things pirates, so while it's clever, I'm going to pass on it.
