eHalcyon wrote:Well I think I see some blending between colours but it might just be blending into the shirt, which would be stippling? I think I've been looking at too many dots.

No, No, Its definitely just stippling, like almost every other entry. In fact, the only reason I submitted this was because I saw that they were allowing any form of art that was composed of dots or short dashes, and not rejecting any entry that didn't blend primary colors to create secondary and tertiary colors.

Seurat was really the only person OCD enough to get pointalism right. I'm pretty bad with color to begin with, so there is no way I would consider attempting to master pointalism in a week.

Heather grey just captures the moment in a way no asphalt or blue shirt can.

Re: Ethereal Bird

I wanted to give designing shirts a shot and this is my very first attempt. This design would not be possible without the brushes and helpful guide provided by Zenne at her blog http://zenne.blogspot.com/

That being said this abstract idea is the product of an evening of sketching. I would love lots of feedback, whether it is negative or positive. Thanks.

Thank you to everyone who supported this.

It was a big boost of confidence to see my work soar up to 16th place, after my last entry only made it to 69th. I really don't have the heart to drastically modify this one and resubmit, so I may just sit this week out if I don't come up with something else.

Hopefully I can come up with something you'll like next week. Again, thank you all so much for supporting this design while it was up. I hope I can live up to your expectations again next week.

I see what you mean, after seeing boot's entry I got a good example of what pointillism should look like. This was my first attempt at digital pointillism and while I really like the outcome, I can understand your argument. I'm currently working on a redesign of this one with more blossoms and shading, so hopefully it'll turn out even better

Josephus wrote:I'd be ever so grateful if you would post some paintings with long dashes like the ones here, or the ones in sekiyoku's submission. It would certainly strengthen your position, and hers, if someone could post some serious, well accepted, works of pointillism that are as you describe. I haven't found anything myself, and I have been diligently trying.

Mondrian is a good example, though the dashes he used aren't as long as seki's (which I don't agree it's pointillism either way...). My point was that pointillism isn't necessarily just "dots."

"The mill under the sun, shows Mondrian’s confrontation with this classical hollandaise theme. The painting reflects the influences of the “fauvism”, and Van Gogh’s painting principles. The mill, appears against the light painted by several superimpositions of paintbrushes. The use of the “pointillism technique” allows Mondrian to dematerialize the form, and the utilization of “fauvism composition” to allow him reach new levels of abstract reality."

And here is my description of it:

This shirt is good because it is many shirts in one. It never gets dirty and is appropriate for all occasions, including soirees, sporting events, and funerals.

Re: firefox

I have to agree that the solid brown background makes this NOT pointillism. I haven't taken an art class in 13 years and even I can tell that it doesn't fit the theme. I've been wooting for over a year now so I feel like I've gotten to know the site fairly well. It's things like this not being rejected that make me feel woot is losing all credibility.

I agree with someone else who said it was a poor rejection. I like your design better. I don;t find the two shirts that similar.

Well, I would hope that Seurat was OCD enough to get pointilism right, or we wouldn't have the technique. And as far as the misconception of only primary colors, he used 11. The point is to form new colors using a limited palette without mixing pains together, not limiting yourself to only primaries.
He did avoid white though, using the canvas itself showing through for that. He also avoided black, as did the Impressionists, because black isn't really a color, it's the absence of color.

kylemittskus wrote:Personally, I think you're a moron. However, I think that Moejo is a moron as well. You because you insult someone's honest, though erroneous attempt at criticism. And Moejo because pointillism does not require multiple colors at all. It is based on using dots (points) to create a picture. And normally, those dots, when viewed in close proximity to one another, create the illusion of another color. Both of you kids need to go sit in the corner.

The problem is that Moejo is a lot more on, though.

There IS a difference between stipling and pointillism. This still leans far too close to stipling for me. The majority of the "gray" of the rhino is the canvas, not a blending of colors.

I'd need to see detail pictures to comment on whether or not I think there is "blending" going on here, but right now it looks more like three separate colors being used for stipling.

You guys do realize you're setting yourselves up, right?

What's going to happen when this is rejected and submitted on a brown shirt? You guys won't have anything to complain about the actual execution of the design anymore, which is the lines, but even then, there ARE examples of the famous pointillist artists using short brushstrokes.

I don't get this. This doesn't look like a fruit bat at all and if this were a vampire bat it wouldn't want to eat fruit. Is this really just making fun of the whole vampire/bat myth? Calling vampires "fruity". Even if this were just a vampire in bat form it still wouldn't be eating fruit. Being that this design is called "Vampire"...I'm totally lost. Can someone explain please?
