Re: Fading Fast

I agree, this is a poor candidate for rejection. There are many others, even some with far too many votes, that I feel should have been rejected long ago.

This shirt is just awesome.

Regardless if you think this design "is" or "is not" on theme, it's obviously regarded by staff as pointillism enough to qualify.

Simple matter here. If you like it, vote. If you don't, don't. Apparently, it's liked enough as an image that people want it on a shirt. THAT is what this site is about.

Re: Pandora's Friends

Jamie, I am blown away by the creativity in this design. I would never have thought to combine this subject with pointilism, but it works on so many levels. The creatures are creepy enough to come from Pandora's box, but the dots make them artistic enough that I won't be thinking that I am wearing gross bugs on my shirt. Your color schemes are always exciting, but once again, the dots make this even more engaging than your usual work.

Kudos and Do more dots! ;)

I guess I understand the reason for the rejection, but I'm still really sad about it, since this is one of the only shirts that is actually an example of the theme.

sakleehop got it exactly right. Woot is really the problem here, not any of the 'artists'. The way these derbies are being run is not conducive to luring good designers into spending time on a themed/thoughtful entry. Obviously I realize this is Woot's derby & they can do whatever they want with it, but when a demeaning/bull response from Joel actually makes me second guess whether I want to do business with any of the woot sites (notice my box color & more importantly, join date), that is saying something.

How is it possible that this is no longer in the fog and that foxish thing is back in? I really don't understand. This design is exceptionally well done in the appropriate style. The other is not.

Ok well here's my take on this...

1. I usually like Seki's cutesy anime-like designs, that's just a personal pref. though. And even though I have voted for some, for most part I would NEVER actually wear them as a shirt >.<;

2. I would love to actually submit some of my work, but I feel that whats the point if it's almost ALWAYS a guarantee that either Seki or Ramyb or BOTH will be taking over the top spots....
(Besides I thought this was for NON-professionals? Seems to me that with the amount of wins they get, they are more professional then 99% of the other shirt.woot entries)

3. I actually LOVE foxes hence my name, but there is no way in hell I would vote for this shirt! It is absolutely sloppy looking! It really does look like it was thrown together in about 5 minutes maybe less! (ya it may be off topic too but that's not my biggest issue with this)
I don't see how people think this is some great work of art..
Like I said, I do like some of Seki's stuff but this is just blah!!

HeartlineTwist wrote:So, are the people that are giving Seki Gigli (2003) about solid colors going to take issue with the center of this design? Probably not...wonder why...

Frankly, I don't see a problem with either of them.

Comments like this make me wonder if you are blind.

Let's list the differences that separate this design from Seki's off theme shirt shall we?

- In Seki's design, the solid color is the size of the entire design, and has clearly been made using smooth edges (aka not by points). Here, the solid area is very small in scale, and it is clearly made of small dots. We can see this because of the broken edges and holes where other colors show through.

- In Seki's design, the solid color is a completely new color not repeated in any of the 'points'. Here, the color has been used for many of the other isolated points on the shirt, making a more integrated part of the design.

- In Seki's design, the solid color is a complete outline of her subject. Here, the solid shape is simply a small area in the center of the design.

- In Seki's design, the solid color shows through where no points lie as evidence of a lack of time spent with the work and breaking the notion of even acting as "a base", as she claims it was intended. Here, the solid color is carefully placed and not sloppily created.

So are you really trying to compare these two scenarios equally?

Agreed, it's a snuggling travesty. This is one of the best entries this week... sad it was even 4th, tragic that it was ousted from the fog by hack-an-artist. Sad state of affairs.

EDIT: Now Galaxy's out of the fog. ominous messages from Greg, Firefox might print, what yak excrement.

1. Voting for something that you wouldn't wear is asinine. Kinda defeats the purpose of "I'd want one."

joelterrific wrote:So I'm glad to see all these pointilist purists out here. I will say, I've abandoned my plans to submit any of these entries to the Pointilist Preservation Society (don't look it up). Solid background or not, it seems to me this design is in the spirit of the style. Maybe not 'purely' pointilist, but in the realm. I was hoping a Derby like this would encourage designers to try something they hadn't before.

I'm not a pointalism purist; I'm someone who, when coming across a professional organization producing a competition with a set of rules for the submissions, expects the organization to enforce their own rules equally amongst the participants.

If you're going to start in on the "spirit of the style" then you can throw out your rules and reactivate the other "rejected" entries that also have taken a [for lack of a better phrase] creative approach to ignoring your rules in ways they hadn't before.

Either you have rules and stick to them, or you admit that your spine has been misplaced and use "suggestions" instead of "rules."

You're a staff member, and it's your "derby," sure. Have you discussed this issue with anyone at work who would be honest with you even if it made you throw a tantrum? Sometimes the most blatant display of respect is having someone tell you that you've just turned a legitimate competition into a high school popularity contest where a few of the contestants are obviously shagging the judge.

Good luck regaining any semblance of credibility. And I sincerely mean that.

Re: Dragon Falls

Thanks everyone for the comments and critiques. Big thanks for the Best Loser award. All of my past shirts (that I still like) eventually end up in my spreadshirt shop which I keep linked in my sig. I still have some older ones to get up there but some have little things that I want to change and just haven't gotten around to fixing. But this one will be up there when its ok to do so. I may even make a more detailed version too. We'll see. But in some way, it will be available. Thanks!

Hopefully I'll come up with something for the upcoming derby that is as well received and respected. I like the low level of drama on my page... its very chilled here, and I like that. Thank you all!

Wow, I am very embarrassed. I caused all this drama and made people go crazy and then I go to open my file to check it before sending and for some reason, it's the head and nothing else. Well, PTERODACTYLS!. Stupid photoshop, saving cropped versions of my files. I wish I didn't have to to use you to resize things. I'm not _that_ depressed since I didn't expect it to print anyway, but I certainly could have saved you all a lot of anxiety. :p

And I am very sorry to those who liked the shirt and wanted to buy it if it printed, I'm seriously very embarrassed for making a mistake like this. :x

I concede that smooth edges versus clearly being dots is a no-no, but that critique lies in the realm of pointillism as opposed to solid colors.

In other words, there are people that were just like "but-but-but SOLID COLORS" and I was wondering if THOSE people were going to show up and say the same thing in other threads.

These are all splendid arguments, but your (1) is the one that matters most.
