This is going to be more complicated that it looks, but in the end they'll end up rejecting the stupid stuff someone has done before. :/

I agree. There will be a fine line...

"You'll put your eye out" is a general childhood adminishment. I believe the quote in A Christmas Story is "you'll shoot your eye out"... but yeah, if it's been in a movie, on TV, etc, anyone with a major grudge or wanting to get some entry eliminated is gonna bring it up.

no1 wrote:if i read this thing correctly, according to http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/quote%5B2%5D, the use of the word "quote" as a noun dates back to 1888.

Usage Note: People have been using the noun quote as a truncation of quotation for over 100 years, and its use in less formal contexts is widespread today. Language critics have objected to this usage, however, as unduly journalistic or breezy. As such, it is best avoided in more formal situations. The Usage Panel, at least, shows more tolerance for the word as the informality of the situation increases. Thus, only 38 percent of Panelists accept the example He began the chapter with a quote from the Bible, but the percentage rises to 53 when the source of the quotation is less serious: He lightened up his talk by throwing in quotes from Marx Brothers movies.

The above is from Dictionary.com (American Heritage dictionary, says the fine print).

More discussion is available through Google. "Quote" is acceptable as a noun, but one should use "quotation" in formal situations... or to be pedantic, as the good sir kylemittskus is apt to say.

I never really believed in that idiom anyway.
The kid on the right reminds me of Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes for some reason.

I think this would be easier to understand. Really witty design.

Methinks I am going to use that quote about how we can see farther cuz we're like dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants. I think that creates some fun imagery in my mind...granted some sort of obvious imagery, hoho. Perhaps too obvious?

i'd consider considering "quote" to be unacceptable in "formal situations" to be an affectation of an eccentric minority. like using the metric system in north america.

I know Mark Twain will feature heavily in this derby. But I couldn't help but picture a zombified version of him climbing out of a grave.

Woo finished my preliminary design! Mine needs a quick explanation. My quote is Douglas Adams's quote "The meaning of life is 42" When asked what that meant he explained that there are exactly 42 dots on a pair of dice and the meaning of life is to find your own paradise or "pair o' dice" And hence my design

fun fact: the dices faces display the number 4 and the number 2

Another fun fact: The opposite sides of a D6 always add up to 7. So with the 3 and 4 showing on the left one, and a 6 and 1 on the right, you've got them both wrong.

Love the idea but in both of the incarnations of it so far the "words" look pretty ominous. It looks like they could actually hurt him since the book is so large and looming over him.

I'm wondering if there's a way to show that he's impervious to getting hurt by the book in this case, since that's sort of the main point of the adage.

Low blow! But you Americans use metric as well, for science and the like. SI units are standard, after all.
