Yes, people will search the most obvious sites such as the 2 they mentioned, but I can see bands still being in more obscure locations that someone or the other will know of and point out.

I guess you just make them as weird as you can, hahah, or replace the letters with similar sound like Iceman's "Hungry Hippos" to "Hungreee Hippozzz." I think that would work.

I just thought of a cool way to come up with band names. Why don't we just use our screen names! Like the Jasnekos! with cat playing jazz songs. or Like the Grypes! with grapes singing songs of gripes. or like Iceman91s! kinda like a choir of 91 ice people singing, hahah.

I didn't think that was yelling, so much as adding emphasis to further the point. However we'll likely see a mass exodus of poorly searched entries this week as they make their way into the rejected section.

My quick rough sketch to get the main idea. Anyone see a band named American Pi anywhere? I didn't see one, but you all are super sleuths at this game it seems.

And YES there is a song out there to the tune of American Pie, but NOT a band as far as I can tell... /crosses fingers!

So there's a myspace 'band' with the name I want to use, however they have been inactive for over a year, have only 34 page views, no music, and 4 'fans' (2 of which are tom and myspacemusic group).

I'm wondering if it's still okay to use this name, since it seems they aren't actually a band..

If Woot finds them, they'll probably reject you...regardless of the band's active status.

Now, if someone was vindictive enough could they not create some sort of myspace/allmusic page and imitate a band of one of the submissions. Post disqualification if you will.

If someone was only that vindictive...

I think that depending on obscurity, it will be alright. If one dude on his personal blog writes once about how he is going to start a band called "Pie Pie Pie", that probably does not warrant a rejection. Allmusic is pretty comprehensive for national acts, tho, while myspace is where the vast majority of locals head to, so both of those avenues are logical searches. I'm not going to say you'd be safe, but I think there will be a limit to how obscure a rejection will allow.

Now i realize that, however, join date or not it could just be coincidence that a band that's been around say years decided to make their myspace page just after someone submitted a "unique" idea.

Could it not?

Edit for Addendum: Or..if someone registered a music myspace years ago and they don't use it anymore. Could they not convert it into one of the artists submissions?

I just see a lot of gray area with this week's theme.

There will always be holes. In ANY derby, if someone wanted to, they could create cheap rip-offs of fogged entries and post them on CafePress. "Hey, it's been done, see? Reject!" As I understand it, such attempts have been made in the past.

I was going to sit this one out as well, but a friend of mine said he'd really like to see this idea, so i figured I'd give it a shot.

Here's a rough doodle for "Sad Koalas".
According to the 2 references it's not a band name in use. Yes, I wanted to do pandas, but that name exists.

Going to add color and a logo obviously.
Thanks guys.

I personally feel to limit the amount of potential sabotage(not pointing fingers), there has to be 3 legitimate references that indicate two important things. The artist's name and image was indoctrinated at a much earlier time, and that they are still producing some sort of music.

Just a little un-solicited advice.

Seriously...
Options...
Do the nuaghty movie name game. Mother's maiden name and street you grew-up on.
Or first pet and mother's maiden name.
Things like this make for funny band names...
Mad libs could help. Or just randomly open up the dictionary twice; and use one word from each page to create a band name! I mean, it's just that random. I think most are trying to hard, or going about it backwards. Think of something that you want to draw and then work it into a band.

A small independent band might only have an online presence on one site like MySpace, so that wouldn't work very well. In any case, if somebody wants to sabotage, it would be just as easy to create three fake sites as it would be to make one. Legitimacy of a source is difficult if not impossible to verify. What makes a source legitimate? If they're on MySpace, is that legitimate? Because as you pointed out, someone could just make a new page there.

"Still producing music" is not a good requirement. There are many extremely famous old school musical groups that no longer produce music - by your two requirements, all those group names would become valid for this competition.

You're right about one thing, that's for sure. My wording was not quite the way i meant it when i said "still producing music".

What I really mean is either they're still active in the music scene, or they have a music history. If they're not producing music currently, then they have in the past. I mean I suppose by my first argument that would warrant the name "The Beatles" as acceptable.
I'll give you that.

Like you said before though people have done what they can to get others that they have harsh feelings for disqualified. The difference in this week's theme is; in order to create something even an imitation you need some sort of skill or talent. To create or modify an already existing myspace music page takes neither.

Here's to hoping for fair play.

Also, someone should do something with Kim Jong Il(or as i would do Kim Jong ILL)unless that would be celeberity likeness. I'm thinking a rap theme if executed correctly could hit the top.

Given that designs have been rejected for really, really poor quality designs on CafePress with a similar concept, no skill or talent would be needed in making the rip-off design.

Luckily, these kinds of jerk moves almost never happen.
