Re: I'm Late! V2

Very much like this design. I don't agree with what others were saying about putting a heart on the watch face - I think it actually makes more sense to have it back on the fob (thus keeping the heart as a separate element, as the Queen of Hearts was essentially separate and ruling over Wonderland). The only suggestion I have is that you remove the diamond from the 2 o'clock position - it kind of looks like it's just hanging there, rather than being part of the watch face.

When you go exploring, be sure to take a compass. It's awkward when you have to eat your friends.

You have to register to create an account and then buy a shirt. Only people who have purchased something from a woot site are eligible.

You have to purchase something from one of Woot's sites first. So go buy something from either Woot.com or Shirt.Woot.com, and come back to vote. Just click the "I'd Want One" button above the image. Oh, by the way, you need to do all this before 12:00 noon today if you want to vote for this design, because that's when voting ends. So Hurry!

Or wine.woot... and maybe sellout.woot, but I'm still not sure about that one.

Yeah.. I didn't mention wine.woot.com because some states like mine aren't allowed to order anything from this site.

i guess no one else will say this. i think the illustration is well done, but the design is terrible. i would never want to wear this on a shirt. perhaps if the artist had done something remotely interesting with the illustration i might have voted for this. but no, its just a big oval, void of dynamic, on a brown shirt

JadenKale wrote:It's more the fact that designs like this barely make the qualifications for the derby, and make it to the top, all in the name of 'abstract design'. Put ten circles in a triangle with a large circle swirling up towards them and people would 'oooh' and 'aaah' over an abstract bowling/pressure design. AND IT WOULD PRINT! Why? Because if you claim your piece is an abstract interpretation of the derby when you do any design here, people think you're avant-garde and thinking outside of the box.

Umm - have you looked at your own designs? The ones you link to in your signature are all very mundane and at best "boring." If that's your aesthetic and what you appreciate, I can see why you're bitter.

Holy Smokes!

Wow, thanks for all the incredible comments and votes. I glad it was so well received. I certainly didn't expect it to finish that high, especially considering how late it was entered. The comments are better than winning or fogging, it makes it all worth while.

It is funny that many of the concerns are about the color, that is it the part that I struggled over the most, and still never was 100% happy with it.

Again, than you all for your positive responses.

It's a fairly logical complaint, though it is presumable that Jaden may be taking it further than logical conclusions.

The issue I've always held with abstract work in the derby (although I certainly like quite a bit of it in general) is that it's so hard to fit a theme abstractly. "Pressure" is a theme that an abstract can fit into if done right, but the danger is, as was VERY correctly pointed out, abstracts are abstract. Derbies are themed. You can technically pull out any abstract piece you've ever done and argue how it relates to the theme. That's the issue. And when a piece that is totally abstract comes through, often the only thing that makes one think of the theme is the artist's own explanation. That isn't enough for a normal entry: You can't have three bears sitting at home, and say it's a winter entry because they're hibernating. It will get rejected. You can't have a guy walking down the street and call it a Music entry because it's a representation of a park by your house where there is frequently live music playing, so there's likely music around the character. But because abstract is abstract, it can get a bye. Even though it could literally be some splatter, a couple grunge brushes, and an epileptic seizure, tossed about at whim and then simply colored in a way that makes them feel "theme-y".

In this case, I don't think it's much of an issue, but it is definitely a very real concern, and one which has been abused many times.
