omnitarian wrote:So are the "routes" on here actual great circles, or have they been fictionalized? Something has to make up for the choice of such a horribly area-distorting cylindrical projection!

This cartographic design major demands answers!

The routes are fictionalized. I put in the arcs because I thought they looked nicer than straight lines and worked better with the larger swooshes. I wasn't going for total geographic accuracy and rather picked the map type that I felt worked best with the space. I am a confessed nerd but not a cartographer (I do love maps though), so I can understand someone who is a cartographer might quibble with some of my choices.

Thanks! High praise coming from you. I've admired your work for a while now.

This is actually my third submission in as many weeks. My 'nerd life' knuckle tattoo design made it into the top 10 three weeks ago. My 'deuce coupe' didn't do as well the following week, but still managed almost 100 votes.

I'm optimistic about this one, but the crowd has taught me to expec the unexpected.

I think it looks great really. I think it is one of the best out there because it is simple and to the point, even if it does use text.

We reserve the right to reject entries that don’t meet our standards or reflect on our company in ways we don’t like. We’ll be sending these bags to thousands of people for a long time to come, so we have in an interest in them not being too crappy, obnoxious, or stupid.

They probably don't want to be reminded of the brocolli of shame with every shirt they send out.

I like it, although I'm not too fond of the crescent blue, I think other shapes might fit better for the bag design.

I like this because its simple, and would look good on a bag, a lot of these others look complicated/stupid on a delivery bag no offense.

Re: POW!

That's a bummer that the rejectionator is being strict about the exclamation mark being in a circle. It didn't really say that in the derby description, and a lot of cool designs are getting the boot because of it. I understand why he's doing it, I just wish they'd made it clearer in the description before people spent time on their designs.

Are you gonna circle-ize this, ski?

Thank you, my day job pretty much consists of making faces in 3D and then sculpting expressions on them. Doing it over and over has helped with drawing faces I think. Also my kid was kind enough to act this out for me. Hopefully he doesn't mind that I used him for reference to draw a ponytailed girl silhouette.

Very nice. I like the sparkling effect, but I think that's a disqualifying element because it alters the logo.

theonlyphelps wrote:so where do you start to make the designs? is it drawn, or how do you get that into such precise lines?

I don't really draw out my designs anymore like I used to. Now I'll usually paint everything out in Photoshop loosely with a watercolor brush at 72dpi, just placing big shapes and trying to get a feel for the layout and how the lighting and shading might be. Then I upsize it to 300dpi and using a hard edged brush I'll paint in the big mid tone shapes, then paint in separate layers for highlights and shadows. Once all the blocky shapes are in I'll put an outlining layer on top if it's needed. The more I do it the more I like approaching designs like a painting rather than a line drawing that has to be filled in. It's a much quicker process for me as I'm kind of slow and indecisive at line drawing.

This design was a little different because it's only two colors. I did treat white like a third color, painting it in in addition to the blue and yellow then cut it out of the finished design. As far as why the edges are sharp, I just tried to make them as clean and straight as possible when I was adding and erasing so it would look sharper on the bag.

The design fits inside of the template just fine.

I was concerned about the overlapping as well (since I submitted this before the circle thing was clarified), but it survived the first pass of the rejectorator, so hopefully it's okay...
