Took some trash to the landfill yesterday. One of the bags apparently leaked. After baking in the sun all day it soured in my trunk - just spent the last hours washing it. The smell isn't completely gone, but at least I ain't gaggin'!

Any suggestions for eliminating the odor completely? I know Febreze ain't gonna do it.

Put some charcoal (regular stuff, not the match-light kind) in a large shallow container and leave it in there for a couple days? That's one of the suggestions I recently ran across for getting stink out of a freezer, so it might work for a car trunk as well.

Open can of ground coffee (even the cheap instant kind) is supposed to absorb odors and that's what people use to get the cigarette smoke out of cars. It does add a coffee smell, but most people find that agreeable.

well, yes activated charcoal is definitely much better than grilling charcoal. But it's also a lot more expensive.

also have seen a gel-lke stuff that comes in a tub (like a margarine tub). You leave the lid off and it'll absorb a lot of stink.
