Stupid qantas still has the flight as "estimated" even though it should have taken off a few minutes ago.

It is a billion hours.

Actually 17 hours from Sydney to LA. I think. This is a son. He tells me nothing.
Then they are on their own getting to NY and the weather here is going to be "Possible strong thunder storms" for the next two days.
Well, the boys wanted to sleep in the airport!

I have an aunt and uncle who a few years ago moved to TN. They decided to road trip it out here for my sister's wedding. On the way they drove through Yellowstone (they'd been before, but it's been a while). They stopped at one of the waterfalls and there were a bunch of horrified faces. After some investigating two teenage boys could be made out about 2/3rds of the way up the shear rock wall by the waterfall. The mother was sheet white and kept glancing through the zoom lens of her camera. She said the boys were on their way down. She had told them not to go, but they weren't about to listen to her anymore and off they went.

My uncle didn't stick around for the conclusion, but . . . . at least you are just worried about poor decisions no longer fully in your son's control.

Need at least 2 weeks to get good recordings of the birds. The problem isn't the fam, it's the money for the flights and rental car.

Heh. The state is broke, and taking it out on the public universities. It's so bad us teachers have to take 7 days of unpaid "leave" to help save money. And delay our piddling cost of living increases for another year and a half.

So research trips to Hawai'i... are gonna have to wait until I get a grant.

That always pisses me off so much...I mean, yeah, when the state's budget is in bad shape you've gotta cut your spending, but it always seems that education gets the first and deepest cuts.

Our state isn't doing much better. Before I lost my job a year ago (has it only been a year?) I had only gotten one "cost of living" increase in the 7 years I had been employed. The college Orc works for has a 40% budget reduction mandated and even people not working for the University are raising a ruckus (It was talk at the family reunion last weekend, which only got worse when they found out my husband worked for the college).

My college is in better shape than most, having a rather large endowment, but I am just happy to have a job. We incidentally got notice that we have the biggest freshmen class in history here. Wonder who's gonna teach them?

Well, night folks. Gotta get up with the kids tomorrow morning. We're making French Toast! :P

It's because higher ed is considered "discretionary". They can't cut funds to medicare, social security, unemployment, or a slew of other items. One of the few items they can slash is public school funding. Funny thing is that NJ got 1.2 billion for education as part of the stimulus package. How much did the colleges get? 35 million. Wonder where the rest went...
