What is with people clicking "i'd want one" when they admit they don't. Printing shirts that don't sell is worthless, regardless how nice the design is.

And I don't want to take anything away from ya Crescent, the design is creative and well executed. I just loathe the way the derby system isn't used properly.

That was indeed the intention with this design. I debated the colors for a long time, switching the roots between red and blue (and originally submitted blue because I thought the red looked too bold), but then I decided ultimately that I preferred the red conceptually, and went ahead with it. Hopefully the fact that the apple and the roots are red (as well as the contrast in colors in general) conveys the point

Yay! Well, I really like both your designs this week. So hopefully you get one or maybe two prints.

Neat design! I like the purple/blue flowers. I only wish that the grass and flowers extended further beyond the skeleton in a really organic fashion to take up some more space on the shirt. Looks neat though. : )

I think some people do it to counteract the voters who spite vote.

And for votes for designs that aren't in or near the fog, I think it's just to encourage that artist a bit, let them know the design is worthwhile, even if it has no chance of printing.

And for designs in the fog, I suspect there are a number of votes just so that certain designs are less likely to print.

Overall, it probably evens out at the end.

I like both colors, but I'm curious how far off my colors are here.

I betcha this would sell out if it printed.

Well, lavender is purple, but I went with more of a blue for this design--although it's not a pure blue. Purple-blue?

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone! I know this design is a little girly, but I wanted to do something different from my usual submissions (i.e. vomiting xenomorphs, cartoony dinosaurs, dragons wielding giant sausages). Really, I think people were beginning to take me for a dude there for awhile. :P

I do tons of dark shirts anyway and I really like the yellow. So yellow it is. And I don't even own a yellow shirt. That's how much I like the Lemon.

In all seriousness I hope you like it!

Larger Version:

hi crescent...

i hate admitting this because if you don't print i will feel awful, but i am the one who asked for the banana, meaning lemon, but did i really say damn? it is true though i am tired of all the dark shirts. i live in chicago and spring and summer so far have been cold and gray and rainy with the exception of about 10 days. i have a jeep and only got the top down 3 days this year. i am tired of the cold, dark, depressing things so i want bright colors.

i am glad you're at least in 5th, i hope you make the fog again soon and get printed. it is my favorite shirt of the derby, and the yellow just makes it that much better.

thank you for not using depressing colors, although i may be the one depressed if my color request is the reason it doesn't print. good luck, gmv, and def in for 2, maybe 3 when it prints.

Happy Beer.

Thanks! I pretty much like anything on the blue-to-purple spectrum, but I was curious.

I suspect (with absolutely no evidence) that derby participants and voters are skewed towards males, while the buyers on short.woot are skewed towards females. Which is why I think this would sell better than current voting suggests.

I may be all wrong on that male/female ratio. It might be some weird gender bias that I think the guys want to compete, but the girls want to shop.

Oh well - you were right eHalcyon. Even without benefit of Photoshop - my painting had too many color shadows and shading that tantamounted to complex gradients and halftones that Woot could not print. Live and learn... Thanks for your comments and advice.

Here's an idea: how about, one day out of every two weeks is RamyB day? Anything he submits automatically prints on that day. In exchange, he can't participate in derbies.

Winners:
1. RamyB - money in the bank every two weeks
2. Legions of Ramy fans - guaranteed generic shiny schlock once every two weeks
3. Others - no generic shiny schlock ruining derbies

Losers:
1. Integrity

Since there already is minimal artistic integrity in some winners, no big loss! It's win-win-win!

Sadly, I'm only being half sarcastic...

I vote for designs all the time that I wouldn't actually buy. But those are designs that don't have a shot at being printed in the first place. Somebody who takes the time, and does a good design deserves a vote to let them know at least someone is paying attention.

I reserve my votes in the top 10 to only those shirts I would actually purchase. But outside of that rule, I vote very liberally. There are tons of people (myself included) who don't have a realistic shot at ever winning a derby, but enter every week for the enjoyment of it. I don't see anything wrong with throwing around my vote, and giving a few people some encouragement.

I guess I feel that a taking the time to drop a line and comment works just as effectively for the purposes of acknowledgment and support. I still only vote for the ones I absolutely think I would buy, and because of that I usually only end up voting for about maybe 1 to 5 designs for each derby.

I guess I feel using my votes like that is the way to go for me, because I know it irks me to see a design with like 300 votes but only a handful of comments. It just doesn't make sense.

binkdrop wrote:I checked out your website and you have quite a lot of unique work up. To me it sort of skims the "anime" genre, just because of the look of the people and their facial proportions, but it also has a very non-anime look to it as well sometimes from the body proportions. It's a neat mix of both realistic and exaggerated. I think a lot of people on this site will start to like your work more, the more you submit it.

If I could make a suggestion about how you're going about doing your designs at the moment, I noticed that many of your pieces that struck me the most on your website are your simple black and white designs(whether they're just pencil drawings or inked). Although I'm not the biggest fan of anime proportions or faces, this image really stood out to me because that foreshortening is just great! That kind of stuff is so hard to learn to draw just because of perspective issues, and foreshortening makes for a great skill to use on t-shirts because it's an attention grabber.

Anyways, since woot limits color choices to 6 plus a shirt color, sometimes it's difficult to choose colors which effectively convey the mood of an image. In your case, I think your color choices sometimes cause your pictures to look slightly more cartoony than elegant. Submitting just a really detailed and nicely inked design in only one or two colors I think would really make your pieces stand out for their artistic merit. You might also consider adding some abstract background to some of your pieces, or enlarging the design on the shirt to fill more space. This image of yours is so neat as far as posing goes, and although it's quite anime-ish, I'm sure that many people would love to see intriguing characters and poses like this on a shirt.

I am not trying to sound overly critical, and sometimes it's hard to convey sincerity in text, but I really am trying to help, and encourage you to keep at these derbies and just try new things. Your lines are your strong suit - you have some really wonderful characters, and you ink and shade with one color extremely well, and that's what I think really makes your designs shine. In my opinion, it's your color choices (probably because of the 6 color, no gradient limits) that is stifling your pictures.

Anyways I'm sorry for the long winded post.
: )

AWW everything you said is awesome! it is the color limits that I have issues with, I think your idea of one or 2 colors is an awesome idea!!! I will try that next time. It's a learning experience!
