I like this version much much better Truffle! Very 'old storybook illustration' kind of feel.

*Awesome* concept, but the shirt color is not a good fit. Perhaps cream would be a better fit. Also, it is definitely a side placement-esque design.

For everyone in general, I just wanted to say thanks for all the support and nice comments. It'll go down as a near miss I'm sure but I'm really pleased with the positive reception.

Now I few specific replies.

srs12 wrote:... how was this made? did you hand draw or what program?

Like all of my entries, I made this in GIMP with an inexpensive tablet. Sometimes I scan a sketch in and sometimes its all digital. This was a very vague idea that started as just a dragon plant but once I added the baby plant and got the warm expressions I knew it was right. Most times I have a rough idea but it really just slowly turns into something far better as I work. And while I work I start thinking about titles. I always love when a good title comes to me.

stingray69 wrote:It bothers me somewhat that the big plant doesn't appear to be rooted, but still GMV.

I considered drawing it that way but liked the flow and figured, if a plant can smile and have hands then it can probably move around to. And if it can't, well, it can now. It would have worked either way I suppose. I just thought the freedom of not being rooted suited the mood.

mudkiep wrote:why does it look like a goddamn dragon

Because that's what I goddamn wanted it to look like friend.

No, not at all. Nor did you use caps. Its more of a comical reenactment. I very much appreciate your color recommendation. Very much.

I'll pass. I have too many black shirts.

i second that notion. i am so tired of dark shirts! learn to design on color dammit! especially a flora derby. you can use bright colors and still make a statement. stop glooming, just cut yourself already damn emo kids.

i am really glad yellow got such a warm reception, especially the comments stating "i have not/would not buy a yellow shirt but i will buy this if it prints."

i really hope it prints because i know i am in for 3.

good luck!

You are correct, sirrah.

Federal law already makes it illegal for Woot to gather information on minors without parental permission. But my account is of course registered to me, an adult.
My daughter merely drew the picture, I submitted it. With a note to Woot to ask them to bear with me. Seriously, she just needed to see it on the website to make her ecstatically happy.

My wife will probably buy one of the woot shirts that my daughter keeps begging for as her "prize" for submitting.

(If woot isn't cool with that, well then woot wouldn't be the company I think it is)

That's a good price, and she deserves it. My "I wonder" was actually not so much about this one, since it seemed likely a parent sumbitted it. My curiosity was more about someone older who wouldn't have needed the help to get the art posted. And it was just idle curiousity. My mind wander to odd corners sometimes.

1: Woot tends to reward funny shirts more than "artsy" shirts anyways.
2: Why should your tastes be catered to more than others? Especially since woot, contrary to your erroneous stance, will never stop selling comic shirts?

And, for what it's worth (not commenting on this design positively or negatively) funny shirts that are really funny aren't a bad thing.

I do believe if you ever decide to resubmit this design in another derby, it has to be significantly altered in order for it to avoid rejection. Just wanted to let you know!

As always -- someone who knows better than I do what I'm referring to come pop by and explain the rules for resubmitting entries! :p

I hadn't noticed your cream version until now... very nice. I think this also would have been pretty with a teal/turquoise color on cream.

You'll note that the "artsy shirts suck" crowd uses first person singular, while those in the "please improve woot" crowd tends toward first person plural.

This is not an insignificant difference, because it exposes the motivations for exactly what they are. One is too base to be anything but selfish, and one believes in diversity too strongly to be anything but concerned for the betterment of the overall community.
